Near-far effect on coded slotted ALOHA 编码开槽ALOHA的远近效应

Motivated by scenario requirements for 5G cellular networks, we study one of the candidate protocols for massive random access: the family of random access methods known as Coded Slotted ALOHA (CSA). A recent trend in research has explored aspects of such methods in various contexts, but one aspect has not been fully taken into account: the impact of path loss, which is a major design constraint in long-range wireless networks. In this article, we explore the behavior of CSA, by focusing on the path loss component correlated to the distance to the base station. Path loss provides opportunities for capture, improving the performance of CSA. We revise methods for estimating CSA behavior, provide bounds of performance, and then, focusing on the achievable throughput, we extensively explore the key parameters, and their associated gain (experimentally). Our results shed light on the behavior of the optimal distribution of repetitions in actual wireless networks.

Optimization of access points selection and resource allocation in heterogeneous wireless network 异构无线网络中接入点选择和资源分配的优化

In this paper, we tackle the problem of access point selection and resource allocation in heterogeneous networks including 3G/4G and Wi-Fi. We study the user satisfaction optimization in terms of throughput and blocking rate. More precisely, the aim is to associate users with the optimal Radio Access Technology (RAT) and to allocate them the optimal number of Resource Units (RUs) based on their requested services and contracts. Starting with a non-linear problem, we re-formulate it into a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) and assess it on a realistic network configuration. We also compare it with a legacy strategy of selection and allocation. We show that our approach improves the user satisfaction while maintaining a reasonable blocking rate.

Data-driven performance evaluation of carrier aggregation in LTE-Advanced LTE-Advanced载波聚合的数据驱动性能评估

Carrier aggregation increases the throughput of LTE mobile networks by aggregating bandwidth at different frequencies. The theoretical effectiveness of carrier aggregation has been widely studied in the literature and operators claim it substantially increases the network data rate. However, to the best of our knowledge no practical evaluation of the performance of carrier aggregation has been performed using real traffic data. We perform a thorough measurement-based study to assess how carrier aggregation improves the service offered in selected locations in Madrid, Spain. Although the best results for data rate boost are in line with the operator claims, we find that resource usage in aggregated bands is frequently suboptimal, and higher data rates could be achieved by simply overloading a single band. On the other hand, the quality of service achieved by users effectively exploiting carrier aggregation could not be achieved without it.

Cognitive management of self — Organized radio networks based on multi armed bandit 基于多武装强盗的自组织无线网络认知管理

Many tasks in current mobile networks are automated through Self-Organizing Networks (SON) functions. The actual implementation consists in a network with several SON functions deployed and operating independently. A Policy Based SON Manager (PBSM) has been introduced to configure these functions in a manner that makes the overall network fulfill the operator objectives. Given the large number of possible configurations (for each SON function instance in the network), we propose to empower the PBSM with learning capability. This Cognitive PBSM (C-PBSM) learns the most appropriate mapping between SON configurations and operator objectives based on past experience and network feedback. The proposed learning algorithm is a stochastic multi-armed bandit, namely the UCB1. We evaluate the performances of the proposed C-PBSM on an LTE-A simulator. We show that it is able to learn the optimal SON configuration and quickly adapts to objective changes.

Opportunistic alert diffusion in disaster scenario — Stay alive longer ! 灾难场景中的机会主义警报扩散——活得更久!

Opportunistic communications present a promising solution as a disaster network recovery in emergency situations such as hurricanes, earthquakes and floods where infrastructure might be damaged. Recent works have proposed opportunistic-based disaster recovery solutions. However, two main features were left behind. On the one hand, these works do not consider the assortment of networks integrated in mobile devices (e.g. WiFi-Direct, WiFi ad-hoc, bluetooth). Moreover, they do not consider mobile devices that come with various energy levels. This paper proposes COPE, a cooperative opportunistic alert diffusion approach for disaster scenario useful for trapped survivors. COPE considers mobile devices equipped with multiple network interfaces and have various battery power levels. In order to maintain mobile devices alive longer, survivors form cliques and zones in which they diffuse alternately and periodically alert messages until reaching a potential rescuers. Simulation results show that COPE largely outperforms the selfish diffusion scheme in terms of energy consumption while guaranteeing an important alert delivery success.

Energy efficiency of hybrid unicast-broadcast networks for mobile TV services 移动电视服务混合单播广播网络的能源效率

The increasing popularity of linear services such as mobile TV, broadcasting live and sports events using mobile and portable devices, has led to a dramatic growth of the mobile data traffic. To deal with this traffic explosion, future networks have to increase the capacity offered to mobile communications, while at the same time trying to reduce their energy consumption. Actually, recent studies have shown that network cooperation is a promising candidate to deal with such issues. Based on these facts, this paper addresses the optimization of the energy efficiency of a hybrid network in which a broadcast and a unicast networks cooperate to deliver linear type of services to mobile and portable devices. Two optimization methods have been proposed to analytically find the optimal broadcast coverage area that maximizes the energy efficiency of the hybrid network. Simulation results show that using such a hybrid approach improves the overall energy efficiency.

Network slicing via function decomposition and flexible network design 通过功能分解和灵活的网络设计实现网络切片

We argue for flexible network design as an architecture prototype for next generation networks. Such flexible design is developed by capitalizing on the concept of network function decomposition in conjunction with with its relation to network slicing. A detailed view of the proposed functional architecture is put forward, where the role of network function blocks for forming network slices with given requirements is underlined. We further highlight the impact of common architecture over multiple tenants and elaborate on the emerging multi-tenancy business models along with the resulting implications on security.

Relay selection for mmWave communications 毫米波通信的中继选择

Due to high propagation loss and directivity, mmWave links are very susceptible to obstacles blocking the direct line-of-sight path for communication. In this case, indirect communication via a relay may help to circumvent the blockage. In this paper, we propose a two-hop relay selection algorithm for mmWave communications. For the relay selection, we analyze the probability that an indirect path is available given that the direct path is blocked trough geometric analysis. We then choose the most promising node among neighbors as relay. The analysis shows that the probability of an indirect path is a function of the obstacle density as well as the location of relay nodes. When the density is low, the correlation between the direct path and an indirect path is dominant, i.e., the angle between the direct path and the path to relay should be large, whereas the blockage probability of an indirect path becomes more dominant as the density increases, i.e., relay links should not be too long. The probability analysis also allows to decide an initial antenna angle for beam-training in mobile mmWave environments. Through numerical studies, we verify our analytical results.

For the relay selection, we analyze the probability that an indirect path is available given that the direct path is blocked trough geometric analysis. We then choose the most promising node among neighbors as relay. The analysis shows that the probability of an indirect path is a function of the obstacle density as well as the location of relay nodes. When the density is low, the correlation between the direct path and an indirect path is dominant, i.e., the angle between the direct path and the path to relay should be large, whereas the blockage probability of an indirect path becomes more dominant as the density increases, i.e., relay links should not be too long. The probability analysis also allows to decide an initial antenna angle for beam-training in mobile mmWave environments. Density evolution thresholds for noise-against-noise min-sum decoders 噪声抗噪声最小和解码器的密度演化阈值

In this paper, we define Noise-against-Noise Min-Sum (NAN-MS) decoders as decoders that incorporate a certain amount of random perturbation due to deliberate noise injection. We introduce a noise model which is used to implement quantized NAN-MS decoders, using a limited number of precision bits. The behavior of NAN-MS decoders is investigated in the asymptotic limit of the code length using a noisy version of density evolution (DE). We use the noisy-DE thresholds to analyze and optimize the noise model parameters. We show that a controlled injection of noise allows NAN-MS decoders to achieve better performance than noiseless MS decoders, especially for low precision. The finite-length simulations confirm the conclusions of the DE analysis.

Downlink performance of dense antenna deployment: To distribute or concentrate? 密集天线部署的下行性能:是分散还是集中?

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (massive MIMO) and small cell densification are complementary key 5G enablers. Given a fixed number of the entire basestation antennas per unit area, this paper fairly compares (i) to deploy few base stations (BSs) and concentrate many antennas on each of them, i.e. massive MIMO, and (ii) to deploy more BSs equipped with few antennas, i.e. small cell densification. We observe that small cell densification always outperforms for both signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) coverage and energy efficiency (EE), when each BS serves multiple users via L number of sub-bands (multicarrier transmission). Moreover, we also observe that larger L increases SIR coverage while decreasing EE, thus urging the necessity of optimal 5G network design. These two observations are based on our novel closed-form SIR coverage probability derivation using stochastic geometry, also validated via numerical simulations.
