The development of millimeter wave hybrid integrated circuit balanced mixers using two-terminal devices has been considered nearly mature. In this paper, the present state of this technology is reviewed. Advantages and disadvantages of existing mixer configurations are discussed along with their measured performances. Some new configurations for both fundamental and subharmonic mixers are also proposed and examined.

We have set up a cusptron device to compare the performance of π mode and 2π mode operation at 8th harmonic interaction. A concentric e-layer of of 30 Kev (γ=1.06) is produced for wave generation. For 2π mode operation, an 8-slotted waveguide with b/a = 22 is used, where b and a are the radii of the vane and the inner wall of the waveguide respectively. In order to achieve same output frequency for comparison, a 16-slotted waveguide with b/a =1.23 is used for π mode operation. The arrangement of the set up will be described. The preliminary results of the experiments will also be presented.

We report experimental and theoretical studies of a novel type of cross-field microwave generator. The cathode is smooth while the anode is rippled (Fig.1) to produce an azimuthally periodic modulation of the radial electric field (analogous to an electrostatic wiggler). The system is operated in the inverted geometry,1 where electrons are field-emitted from the inside of the smooth outer conductor. The depth of the grooves is adjusted so as to favor FEL interactions and minimize the usual slow-wave (magnetron) interactions.2 Approximate analytic single-particle orbits in the external crossed uniform electric and magnetic fields and the radial electric wiggler field of an idealized planar device are obtained. These orbits provide a basis for uniform and nonuniform kinetic and fluid equilibrium distribution functions. These equilibria in turn provide a basis for linear stability analyses of the device, which yield appropriate dispersion relations. Experimentally, we observe for our parameters (V ∼ 300 kV, I ∼ 1 kA, B‖ ∼ 5 kG, N = 0,8,12,24 wiggler periods) a high power microwave signal in the Ka-band. Removal of the wiggler (smooth-bore magnetron configuration) results in a reduction of the signal by ∼ 20 dB. These results suggest an emission mechanism analogous to that of the rippled-field magnetron.3

As new gain media are investigated and new optical pumping conditions are employed, the spectral coverage produced by Raman FIR lasers continues to expand. Concommitant efforts to improve the theoretical modeling are improving our understanding of the laser and contributing to the optimization of its performance.

We discuss the possible induction of magnetic field fluctuations in laboratory plasma during plasma heating by electromagnetic waves. Basically, the electromagnetic wave excited lower hybrid waves may become pump waves to excite instabilities. We will describe a process that can simultaneously generate plasma density fluctuations and magnetic field fluctuations. Significant cross-field magnetic perturbations can be produced and, then, give rise to the plasma confinement problem during plasma heating.

A small diameter CW FIR laser that can provide approximately 100 MHz spectrally pure tunability has been developed and studied both experimentally and theoretically (1). Operation of this laser at pressures significantly greater than the maximum allowed by previously accepted theory yields the large tunability. The new model includes additional high energy vibrational states and appropriate energy transfer mechanisms that fundamentally alter the behavior in the high pressure, high pump intensity regime. Although 13CH3F is used for both the experimental demonstration and the theoretical model, the concept is general and should apply to all diffusion deactivated FIR lasers.

The FIR transmission spectrum of [Pd(-chnx)2Br] Br2 was studied in magnetic fields up to 7 T and at temperatures below 2.5 K. With the magnetic field oriented perpendicular to the c-axis, several peaks were observed. The origin of these is not yet well understood.

The parasitic effects on millimeter-wave phase shifters have been studied for both analog and digital applications. The analog phase shifter uses the hybrid coupled configuration and the digital phase shifter uses the loaded line configuaraton. The results have shown that the parasitics have strong effects on the phase shifter performance at high frequencies.
