The Orbitron Maser is a device in which R.F. radiation is produced by electrons in elongated or circular orbits around a positively charged central anode wire. This wire is surrounded by a circular cylinder which is at ground potential. This cylinder acts both as a cathode and as a cavity resonator. The frequency of this radiation, for circular orbits, (v) is,

Possibilities for use of high temperature superconductors in microwave/far infrared resonators and waveguides are described. Relative to conventional superconductors, the use of high temperature superconductors could remove the constraint of relatively low energy gaps and provide larger thermal margins and more effective cooling. The higher critical magnetic fields may also be important for an increased range of operation. These features could be used to improve performance of present superconducting microwave cavities and to provide new applications at both microwave frequencies and at much higher frequencies. Constraints that may inhibit development include a need for superconducting properties over a high fraction of the surface, limits on critical RF fields and the effect of D.C. magnetic fields.

Two new types of integrated switch are presented. Conmercial beam-lead diode originally designed for lower frequency band can be used at higher frequency band by means of reverse-mode and compensation technique. The experimental results of two prototype circuits at Ka-band and W-band are given.

In the frame of a development program aiming towards an 8 GHz, 500 kW CW gyrotron, a 200 kW prototype has been tested at pulse lengths up to 30 ms, yielding 50% electronic efficiency. More than 99% of the output power were measured in the TE01 mode. A fully-cooled long pulse gyrotron for 300 kW at maximum efficiency (57.8%) has been manufactured.

Results of extensive analysis of the high resolution Fourier transform spectrum of the C-O stretch band of 13CH3OH are presented for the A torsional symmetry species in the n=0 torsional ground state, in terms of phenomenological state-dependent parameters. FIR laser assignments associated with (nτK)=(019) states are also discussed.

A time-dependent slow-time-scale theory is developed for the analysis of high power, pulsed gyrotrons driven by external RF sources. Phase-locking of a gyrotron by direct injection of radiation into the cavity and by beam premodulation via a bunching cavity is investigated. Calculations are carried out to simulate the operation of a 35 GHz high voltage gyrotron.

Ten infrared radio-frequency double resonance signals have been observed in CH3OD. Tentative assignments of these transitions will be discussed. The observed transitions belong to A-type symmetry states and allow for the determination of asymmetry splitting parameters. These are useful in further assignments of rovibrational lines belonging to the CO-stretch fundamental band, which has recently been recorded.

Preliminary analytical work has been performed on a low order prebunched FEL interaction, which exploits the narrow micropulse width of the beam produced by a linac compared to the wavelength of the generated wave. If the electrons are resonant with the FEL beat wave, then short electron micro-pulses will yield gain significantly higher than in the conventional FEL.

As compared to n-type GaAs/Ga(Al)As hetero junctions, the corresponding p-type structures are by far neither as well understood nor thoroughly explored. The reasons for this are the complicated valence-band structure from the theoretical point of view and the relatively low mobility of the 2D-holes from the experimental side. As a matter of fact, the summary of experimental and theoretical results re-mained fragmentary and inconsistent, so that no direct criterion could be used to distinguish between the different modes established [1–4]. In the present study we present a complex set of submilimeter-magneto-transmission data up to 35 Tesla for different sample configurations and temperatures in context with a straight-on simulation of the data applying KUBO's formula [5] for the microscopic high-frequency conductivity in a realistic op-tical multi-layer system including inter-ference effects.
