For over a decade there has been several studies on mental health effects of anxiety caused by epidemic on psychological wellbeing of medical workers and those quarantined. In the face of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Poland it is vital to apply knowledge from previous research on the psychological impact of global disease outbreaks in order to anticipate mental health costs of the epidemic and social isolation. Recent research has shown medical workers are the most vulnerable to post traumatic stress among many others identified, e.g., people quarantined and socially isolated due to introduced countermeasures. Research gives insight on the impact of overwhelming sense of threat on those affected by the pandemic and how these effects can be observed in declined wellbeing and physical health over long periods of time after the exposure.

Introduction: Schizophrenia is one of the most severe mental disorders. It is characterized by a chronic course, diverse clinical image, and it often leads to incapacity. The course and severity of the disease may vary, while the appearing symptoms constitute a turning point in patient’s and his family’s life. This is why it is important to recognise the symptoms and undertake therapeutic measures. The reoccurrence of the disease does not appear suddenly. Usually it is preceded by the period of various changes in patient’s behaviour and feelings. Those changes are called the warning signs of a relapse. The aim of this research was to learn about patients’ knowledge of schizophrenia, the consequences of not following the doctor’s orders and the warning signs of a relapse. Material and methods: The study group consisted of 69 patients from Mental Health Clinic in Bielsko-Biala. For the purpose of this MA thesis the method of diagnostic survey was used. The survey included authorial questionnaire consisting of 30 structured questions with the possibility of giving one or more answers. Results and conclusions: In the course of the conducted research obtained the results which indicated the high level of studied patients’ knowledge of schizophrenia, its symptoms and the warning signs of a relapse as well as ways of treatment. The examined people expressed the awareness that following doctor’s orders may significantly decrease the risk of relapse. The most relevant issue concerning the acceptance of a disease, the level of patients’ awareness of a disease and systematic compliance with the recommendations of medical staff were enumerated. Most respondents experienced a relapse, despite their declared knowledge of relapse prevention methods. Side effects of used medicines were the frequent cause of treatment discontinuation. The patients indicated contact with medical staff as the main source of broadening their knowledge.

This article presents guidelines for the management of a psychiatric patient infected with COVID-19. The Polish Psychiatric Association provides recommendations and tips, including guidelines from other countries regarding the treatment of psychiatric patients during the epidemic time. In Poland, patients requiring psychiatric hospitalization have been treated in centers appointed by the government. In the West Pomerania region such center is the Department of Psychiatry of Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin. Psychiatric wards have been transformed and adapted to the profile of infected or potentially infected patients who have been quarantined. We present the case of the patient with an affective disorder who was hospitalized on the local infectious ward, the possible difficulties associated with drug interactions between psychiatric drugs and those used to treat COVID-19 infection.

A written account of experiences of psychiatric patient contact at an inpatient ward has prompted reflection on the role of bonds of fellowship in postgraduate specialty training. Exchange of experiences between junior doctors and their more experienced, senior colleagues takes the form of a natural exchange of knowledge and inter-generational learning. This type of mentoring is considered a significant element of postgraduate training both in psychiatry and the other medical specialties

Q4 Medicine Pub Date : 2020-08-30 DOI: 10.5603/psych.2020.0020
A. Czernikiewicz, Tomasz Horoch
Citalopram is the most selective molecule in the class of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), except its active enantiomer S-citalopram. It belongs to the group of antidepressant and anxiolytic drugs, which is currently the standard in the treatment of depressive disorders and anxiety disorders with panic attacks, especially for the elderly. There is a lower risk of adverse interactions with other drugs because citalopram is metabolized by several CYP isoenzymes. The risk of sexual dysfunction caused by citalopram appears to be relatively smaller in comparison with other SSRIs.

Introduction: Human sexuality is an essential element of every individual’s life, and sexual health is one of human rights. Sexual disorders affect different population groups, but people with depression are particularly at risk, which is becoming an increasingly serious social and medical problem. Both the disease and associated side effects of pharmacological treatment can cause sexual problems and sexual dysfunctions can contribute to the development of depression. Self-esteem, which is understated in people with depression, contributes to the development and maintenance of sexual dysfunctions. Material and methods: There were 72 respondents included in the research. The research group consisted of 32 respondents with depressive episode, the control group comprised 40 without psychiatric disorders. Research questionnaires have been used: The Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5), polish version of the Mell-Krat Scale, the Questionnaire of Sexuality (KWS), The Questionnaire of Sexual Disorders (KZM), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), polish version of the Adjective Check List (ACL), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (SES). Results and conclusion: The results showed a significantly lower level of self-esteem in people diagnosed with depressive episode and inferior sexual functioning, significantly in terms of sexual satisfaction. The relationship between the level of self-esteem and sexual satisfaction was demonstrated.

Q4 Medicine Pub Date : 2020-07-20 DOI: 10.31234/osf.io/3ku8w
P. Larionov, K. Mudło-Głagolska
Background: The level of post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) associated with the COVID-19 outbreak, stress, anxiety and depressive symptoms was assessed. Risk factors for mental health in the Polish population have been identified. Methods: The 926 respondents completed a set of questionnaires consisting of questions concerningCOVID-19, PTSS related to the COVID-19 outbreak (Impact of Event Scale-Revised, IES-R) and their mental health status (Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale, DASS-21).Results: Most respondents reported severe PTSS related to the COVID-19 outbreak (44.06%), normal intensity of depressive symptoms (52.38%), anxiety symptoms (56.05%) and stress (56.48%). Female gender, parental status, having a relationship, at least a two-person household are associated with higher PTSS and DASS-21 subscale. A few physical symptoms, a medical visit, quarantine, negativehealth evaluation, and chronic diseases, knowledge of the increase in the number of infected people andthe number of deaths are associated with higher levels of PTSS. Some of the precautions and the need for additional information on COVID-10, the certainty of a high probability of contracting COVID-19, a low survival rate and concerns about loved ones are associated with higher PTSS.Conclusions: The indicated risk factors can be used to develop psychological interventions to improve mental health.
