: Drawing on an adapted CDM model, we present evidence on the role of strategic and operational absorptive capacity on innovation and productivity across industries in developing economies. Using a pooled cross-sectional sample from Chilean innovation surveys, we find that greater absorptive capacity (ACAP) helps firms to increase their innovative investment and the probability of producing technological innovations, which then increases firms’ labor productivity. Additionally, the effect of the strategic dimension is stronger than the operational dimension aspect, which means that the strategy of reaching these external sources might be more important than the skill of a firm´ internal units to acquire and transform external information. We find that while strategic ACAP is a stronger predictor of investment and technological innovation in both manufacturing and services companies, but operational ACAP has differing effects.

: This article analyses the emergence and scale-up of frugal innovations supported by university-industry interactions in the Colombian context. We conducted semi-structured interviews with eight researchers from the National University of Colombia, who participated in activities to transfer technology to society through frugal innovations. Results highlight the social role of the Colombian university and the motivations of the participating researchers to develop frugal innovations. Three benefits of the university-industry interaction to develop and upscale frugal innovations were identified and described: a) the exchange of specialised knowledge that helps to do incremental improvements on frugal innovations; b) the strengthening of distribution and marketing strategies of innovation, supporting its implementation in different contexts; and c) ad-vantages in scaling up production. The relevance of these findings to understand frugal innovation processes and their implications for designing support services by university technology transfer offices are discussed.

: Mobile points of sale become popular as countries migrate to cashless approaches. Small and medium enterprises embrace the technology, and users are attracted to it due to its benefits compared to traditional points of sale. However, scant literature refers to its use in emerging countries despite the relevance of small companies for such economies. This research presents a model of mobile point of sale use in Mexico based on a survey of graduate and undergraduate students. The study uses structural equation modeling to relate variables such as awareness and social influence with gender interaction. Results indicate that social influence influences awareness of the technology and is higher in males than in females. This study suggests that the mobile point of sale service providers in Mexico should consider social influence in their advertising. As users, men should be aware that social influence may influence their decision to use the technology.

A low-cost automated greenhouse prototype was developed, which can be installed on rooftops, gardens, and even commercial greenhouses. This work was carried out through the use of an electronic control system, and a user interface, which allows it to be used by children, young people or adults of the Private Assistance Institution (IAP) "Manitas que hablan", contributing to the cultivation of flowers, herbs, fruits and vegetables. Surveys, experimental and observation was applied wish methodology of during the development of this project, to know the needs of the agricultural sector and to integrate the components of the systems for the automated greenhouse. The study demonstrates the feasibility of collaborative work in the development of a prototype that allows the germination of seeds and harvest of crops, and the importance of providing support to the social sector, promoting urban gardens for the integration of children and young people in this activity, achieving better health and food safety for the future.

Social enterprises need to identify an innovative and differentiated business model to more efficiently meet the needs of their clients and survive in the long term. However, research on customer perception of this innovation is scant. Therefore, the objective of this research was to explore the effect of socially responsible consumption on the business model innovation perceived by clients of social enterprises in the service sector and its effect on satisfaction and loyalty. A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted with 400 customers of social enterprises in the services sector in Mexico. Results showed that socially responsible consumption had a positive influence of perceived business model innovation. Perceived business model innovation had a direct, positive influence on customer satisfaction and an indirect positive influence on loyalty. The implications of the results were discussed.

The need to stimulate technological entrepreneurship has been one of the biggest challenges faced in Science, Technology and Innovation Policies in Brazil. Therefore, the present research sought to carry out a comparative study of different programs and instruments to foster innovation for smaller companies coordinated by the Federal Government and operated through its Autarchies, Public Companies and Social Organizations. The following programs were used as research objects: (1) STARTUP BRAZIL; (2) STARTUP-INDUSTRY CONNECTION; (3) EMBRAPII – SEBRAE PROGRAM; (4) FINEP STARTUP; (5) STARTUP – INDUSTRY CONNECTION 4.0; (6) CONECTA STARTUP BRAZIL. We sought to investigate the following aspects: (1) proposed objectives; (2) profiles of targeted companies; (3) promotion frequency; (4) available financial resources; (5) fostering technological cooperation with STIs, and (6) mobilization of actors from innovation ecosystem. The research’s results demonstrated that there were upgrades in strategies to foster innovation. New programs started to establish new rules with the purpose of stimulating and/or conditioning partnerships’ formation among companies and institutions present in the innovation ecosystem.

An extraordinary moment of agricultural modernization is currently underway due to innovations in Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). In this process, management precepts are renewed, fostering significant gains in efficiency, productivity, and sustainable use of natural resources and the environment. The growing supply of ICTs and the extension of connectivity in rural areas, with their transforming roles in productive practices and economic relations, bring about questions regarding their impacts. These technologies include precision positioning systems and large volume databases, electronic sensors of site-specific production and environmental conditions, repositories of relational data, statistical and crop forecasting software, methodologies and processes; web-based information services, among others. The assessment of impacts focused on ICTs for agriculture needs innovative approaches, due to the peculiarities of their applications, the different scales of their socioenvironmental scopes and, at the same time, the verification of effectiveness of institutional investments on research, development, and innovation (RD&I). Based on these premises, the objectives of this work are to present a ‘module of impact indicators for Information and Communication Technologies (Ambitec-TICs)’, and assess its application to six typical technology adoption cases resulting from agricultural RD&I projects. The results detail critical analyses of the contributions of the proposed module for the registration, interpretation, and communication of impacts, with recommendations for technology transfer and accountability in institutional Social Balance documentation.

Entrepreneurship is crucial for the survival of technology enterprises. Although the literature on techno-entrepreneurship is rich, it lacks a comprehensive and clearly structured techno-entrepreneurship management process to be followed by enterprises. It is also clear from the literature that the causal relationship between innovation, technology and entrepreneurship is complex and choosing among entrepreneurial alternatives is a multicriteria decision making problem with multiple, often conflicting, constraints. This study introduces the Integrated Techno-Entrepreneurship model that aims to help enterprises in pursuing business initiatives. The 4-stage model shows all relevant transformations of inputs from the idea generation stage until final viable product or service. Model content and face validation were done by seeking academic and industry entrepreneurship experts’ opinion respectively. Validation results showed high item-total correlations for all model concepts and a high Cronbach’s alpha value. It is concluded that the model is promising and potentially implementable in real life.

This research is focused on understanding the interrelation between the different dimen- sions of the SERVQUAL model in the pharmaceutical area, which have differences in per- ceptions of service domains depending on the cultures in which they are immersed. To study the proposed relationships, we collect data of 100 pharmacy customers of Mex- ico and use SEM to test the relationship between SERVQUAL dimensions, purchase fre- quency, gender, and quality perception. Our results show that the SERVQUAL dimensions are interrelated, SERVQUAL dimen- sions and gender predict the perception of quality but not the purchase frequency. These results provide key information in order to understand in a better way the service quality in the pharmaceutical area. We develop a theoretical framework that is based on interrelationships between the dif- ferent dimensions of SERVQUAL, assuming that they are not independent of each other. This way of understanding SERVQUAL dimensions can provide relevant information to un- derstand better how individual perceptions affect the service quality in the pharmaceutical area.
