Abstract:In the 1940s, several mental health practitioners began experimenting with the use of multiple therapists. This article focuses on the contribution of Rudolf Dreikurs and Individual Psychology to this experimentation with the structure of psychotherapy. In 1946 Dreikurs and the members of his group private practice began exploring the use of multiple therapists in the treatment of clients. This grew out of his experience in the family guidance clinics begun by Alfred Adler in Vienna in the 1920s and 1930s. This exploration led to the Individual Psychology multiple psychotherapy model, with a specified sequence of interviews designed to serve as an intake to a group practice. Three other multiple therapist models, a brief therapy model, a reflection team model, and a cotherapy model, are briefly discussed, followed by a discussion of the use of these models in training and supervision.

The diary is also prefaced by Alfred Adler, who was at some point called to treat Nijinsky. The diary is often referenced in the field of psychology as holding insight into this unique experience of mental unhealth. Vaslav Nijinsky, a famous ballet dancer of his time, wrote the diary at age 21 while living in Switzerland with his wife, child, and mother-in-law during World War I. Throughout this diary, he alludes to early childhood experiences. Some of these stories are explored here through the lens of Rudolf Dreikurs’s Children: The Challenge in an effort to approach the historically popular case study from Dreikurs’s viewpoint, with a specific focus on such topics as goals of misbehavior.

In the letters, currently kept at the Manuscript Division of the U.S. Library of Congress, Dreikurs described his travels, filled with training and teachings, meetings with people, sightseeing, and observations, in at least 10 U.S. states and 20 other countries. The authors identify and explore themes in the letters, including his concerns with major geopolitical crises, his attention to social problems within and between countries, and his work to preserve and maintain the Adlerian movement. The authors demonstrate how these themes align with Dreikurs’s legacy. The article allows readers to get to know Rudolf Dreikurs on a more intimate and personal level.
