Abstract:As early as Alfred Adler's first visit to the United States in 1927, he saw the acute need to foster Individual Psychological education on a national scale. In Adler's view, the strong American emphasis on personal competitiveness necessitated major pedagogical innovation to better nurture children's cooperative abilities. Among those drawn to Adler's vision was the influential American child psychiatrist David M. Levy. Drawing on published sources and newly discovered correspondence involving Adler and Levy, we highlight how his potential support for Adler's far-sighted goal was lost due to the overzealousness of his chief American benefactor, the business magnate Charles Henry Davis. The article also discusses the relevance of this historical episode for contemporary advocates of altruistic and civic education.

Abstract:The author describes her early acquaintance with Adlerian practice while studying for clinical practice as a U.S. Navy officer. She describes the impact on her by juxtaposing it to the heavily burdened medical model of therapy she found herself in as she completed studies. She also describes her experience of providing psychological care during military service, which led her, upon completion of duty assignment, to develop Warfighter Advance. The author describes the effort to create a non-medicine-oriented psychological support program to bring sufferers from military trauma back to their best selves. She portrays the program as an amalgam of her Adlerian upbringing, U.S. Navy core values, and undergraduate training in theater “to build a viable and life-saving alternative” to medicinal dependence for dealing with war trauma.

Namely, the affinity of concepts shared between calculus and Adlerian psychology derived from the viewpoint and explanations presented by Marina Bluvshtein. First, the author considers the difference between Adler’s law of movement and Newton’s law of motion. Second, the author considers the idea of limit as inherent in the Adlerian law of movement. Third, the mathematical idea of double limit appears through a pursuit of belongingness. Finally, the concept of integration is discussed in connection with early recollections.

Abstract:This narrative illustrates the author’s gradual movement toward becoming a classical Adlerian depth psychotherapist (CADP) and training analyst. The following elaboration on the influences that guided the author in this direction and any personal contributions are discussed. In conclusion, some ideas about the integration of CADP with the treatment of addiction are postulated. This incorporation may be one of many potential paths to bring Adler’s theory and relevance to current depth psychodynamic psychotherapy treatment that it deserves.
