Abstract. The Escuela del Mar (Barcelona, 1922-1938), as a Catalan, Spanish and European reference for pedagogical renewal, stood out for its democratic model. The hygienic objective together with the self-government of the children was characteristics related to the ideals of New School. Its director, Pere Verges, promoted a social life centered on young people, with numerous and diverse activities. These were to educate the child, provide him with good values, and offer him an intellectual formation. Values such as cooperation, competitiveness or effort were also discussed. Also included was body education, reading or artistic-musical sensitivity. The object of study is the Escuela del Mar. It offers historical-pedagogical interpretation of what the school was in a global way, and what it meant. The methodology used has been based on analogical-iconic hermeneutics, dealing with three images and contextualizing them with other descriptive sources - of the time and current. The results cover and relate from another point of view, with theoretical studies that analyze the school and its students. The importance of what the center meant was also evident.

This historical case study focuses on the origins, educational goals, and school reform activities of the City-Wide Citizens’ Committee on Harlem (CWCCH), a political action group in Harlem in the 1940s. An interracial and interfaith civil rights organization with a broad reform agenda, CWCCH used democracy’s rhetoric as a vehicle for social change through an extensive public awareness campaign coupled with savvy organizing, ample organizational resources, and powerful political connections in both the White and African American communities. The article situates school reform work in Harlem during the 1940s in light of a larger citywide civil rights agenda and interracial activism.

The socio-discursive construction of the identity of Latin American immigrants in Barcelona Abstract In identifying, constructing, understanding, enforcing and negotiating identity (personal, collective, social and cultural identity), the speech has a paramount impact. The subject, the self, is a socio-historical and ideological subject. It is a self permeated by social, cultural, historical and ideological elements, having to talk of a multidimensional, fluid, contingent and decentered self (Castoriadis, 1989; Revilla, 2003: 55). This paper aims to identify and analyze the socio-discursive construction of the identity of Latin American immigrants in Barcelona, from the perspective of enunciation, social constructionist psychology and through the discourse produced in four discussion groups. This work belongs to a greater scope research on socio-cultural integration of Latin American immigrants in three different cities: Barcelona, New York and Los Angeles. It takes as its starting point an empirical, qualitative and phenomenological methodology. The relevance and the purpose of the present work is to report the significance of identity for immigrants in new sociocultural contexts, to observe how these new contexts affect the construction of the identity and determine immigrants’ behavior, sensitivities and their ways of being and doing in the host society. Abstract Spanish rural areas are characterized by high sex ratios and high proportion of over 65 population. This paper addresses the influence of this demographic context on informal care strategies for elderly people, since family remains the main care provider in Spain. The methodology combines both quantitative and qualitative data. Census data have been used to prove how demography poses relevant challenges to the traditional distribution of care work. In-depth interviews were conducted to analyze current strategies to organize social care. Results show the unsustainability of traditional informal care, the rise of new care mechanisms and the necessary entrance of men as care providers.

Greece has been the focus of the mass media because of the ongoing economic crisis and the mixed migration flows that use the country as entry point to Europe. Although conceptually different, both phenomena converge in a vicious cycle that triggers an othering process. The economic crisis transfers Greece from the geopolitical centre to the periphery making the country dependent on the external economic and political decision making. Nevertheless, apart from being at the border, Greece is also the border of Europe. Peripherality appoints to Greece an instrumental role for the management of migration. Boundaries as “thresholds” produce patters of inclusion and exclusion creating by that perceptions of the Self and the Other. To that extent, the instrumental role of Greece as consequence of its peripherisation amplifies locally an othering process. Based on a different function of borders and peripheries, namely the endorsement of antagonistic narratives, this article discusses potential interventions in that vicious cycle. A local cultural diversity in Rhodes, Greece, the Rhodian Muslim community has been the receiving end of diversity management policies with particular emphasis on education throughout the 20th century. The knowledge accumulated may support new efforts countering the othering process.

This paper explores the meaning of child health as applied by Dutch school doctors and the way it was adapted to the rapidly improving standard of living and the increasing importance of mental health after World War II. It focuses on both the national discourse and school doctors’ daily activities. For the latter the countryside of the Province of Groningen, a relatively poor area, is chosen. Despite assertions that their profession subscribed to a new, positive and inclusive, concept of health, introduced by the WHO in 1948, the Groningen school doctors continued to use a negative concept of a “healthy” schoolchild until well after world War II. It was a child that was not bothered by diseases or infirmities or any other “abnormalities”. They clung to the original aim of school medical inspection: the promotion of the school’s efficiency by the reduction of possible dangers threatening pupils’ learning capacity. In the postwar years these threats were more often found in an unfavorable school climate, with too large classes and too much intellectual work, producing “mental overburdening”. In doing so they made their concept of health more inclusive by linking up physical and mental health.

In the postwar years these threats were more often found in an unfavorable school climate, with too large classes and too much intellectual work, producing “mental overburdening”. In doing so they made their concept of health more inclusive by linking up physical and mental health. Resumen Este trabajo explora el significado de la salud infantil, aplicado por los medicos escolares holandeses entre 1930 y 1970, y la forma en que ello reflejo el rapido aumento del nivel de vida y la creciente importancia de la salud mental despues de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Este se centra tanto en el discurso nacional como en las actividades diarias de los medicos escolares. En relacion a este ultimo, se ha estudiado la zona rural de la provincia de Groningen. A pesar de las afirmaciones de que su profesion se habia adherido a un concepto nuevo, positivo e inclusivo de la salud, introducido por la Organizacion Mundial de la Salud en 1948, los medicos escolares de Groningen continuaron utilizando un concepto negativo de escolares «sanos» hasta mucho despues de la Segunda Guerra Mundial: un nino o nina que no habia estado afectado por enfermedades o dolencias o cualquier otra \"anormalidad\". Estos se aferraban al objetivo original de la inspeccion medica escolar: la promocion de la eficiencia escolar mediante la reduccion de las posibles amenazas a la capacidad de aprendizaje del alumnado. En los anos de la posguerra, los medicos escolares a menudo asociaban estas amenazas con un clima escolar desfavorable. Las clases excesivamente grandes y las fuertes cargas academicas se consideraron factores que conducian a la \"sobrecarga mental.\" Por lo tanto, los doctores escolares cambiaron su concepto de la salud al vincular salud fisica a salud mental para que este fuera mas inclusivo.","PeriodicalId":41118,"journal":{"name":"HSE-Social and Education History","volume":"6 1","pages":"196-219"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2017-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44449242","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
