On performance of multiple-domain diversity in powerline communication networks 电力线通信网络中多域分集性能研究

In this paper, we theoretically analyze the achievable physical layer performance of multiple-domain diversity mechanism in wireline home networks, where the content is either kept within the same domain or distributed over different domains. We theoretically evaluate the symbol error rate (SER) performance and outage probability of multiple-domain PLC network based on minimum mean square-error (MMSE) combining while taking into consideration the impact of different noise impairments in powerline channel. It has been shown that required signal-to-noise ratio can be reduced while achieving the target performance if the system is properly designed.

Potential impact of the CENELEC spectral mask on broadband PLC networks CENELEC频谱掩码对宽带PLC网络的潜在影响

A large majority of broadband power line communication (PLC) equipments currently sold in Europe are following the HPAV specification. These systems generate a windowed OFDM signal in the [1.8, 30] MHz frequency range, and offer a theoretical throughput of up to 200 Mbps at the physical layer. This value can be reached considering an ideal PLC channel, using only 917 out of 1536 subcarriers so that the transmitted PSD fits into the spectral mask imposed by the FCC. In 2011, the European committee in charge of EMC regulations, the CENELEC, proposed a much more restrictive standard to regulate PLC transmission power level. In this paper, we firstly emphasize on the significant impact this new spectral mask could induce on HPAV networks. Secondly, we show that an alternative modulation, named OFDM/OQAM, could notably limit the potential capacity loss in the case this new standard would be adopted. Indeed, it appears that the possibility of using frequency selective prototype filters gives OFDM/OQAM a decisive advantage in comparison to the windowed OFDM scheme.

PLC systems for electric vehicles and Smart Grid applications 电动汽车和智能电网应用的PLC系统

In this paper an extensive set of measurements, simulations and testing of a commercial modem are performed in an electric vehicle to evaluate the performance of PLC. The noise of the motor drive is measured and characterized in the time and frequency domains. Also, the noise generated by the AC/DC converter is measured and described. The symbol-error-rate performance of a multicarrier communication scheme is analyzed via simulation by employing the above modeled channels and noise.

A PLC broadband channel simulator for indoor communications 用于室内通信的PLC宽带信道模拟器

In this paper we propose a frequency-domain broadband channel simulator for indoor power line communications (PLC). We follow a bottom-up approach by defining the topology in a fixed mode or in a random mode. The channel matrix coefficients are derived by using the well-known two-port ABCD line modeling. The channel simulator takes into account cable characteristics, effective lengths of branches, and also loads by selecting the load impedances from a predefined set. We will show how to use our bottom-up channel simulator to generate random PLC channels and to match measurement results with a predefined approximation.

A study on channel estimation under class A impulsive PLC channel A类脉冲PLC信道估计的研究

OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) is the modulation scheme that is widely used in broadband power line communication (PLC). In OFDM transmission, influence of the additive impulsive noise appears on every subcarriers that are the outputs of the DFT in the receiver because of the broad band spectrum of the impulsive noise. As the result, it causes significant degradation of the performance of OFDM transmission. Therefore, an appropriate measure to reduce the influence of impulsive noise is required and many schemes for impulsive noise reduction are proposed. In order to reduce the influence of the impulsive noise effectively from the received signal, precise estimation of transmission channel is necessary. However, the pilot symbols for channel estimation are also affected by impulsive noise and the scheme to estimate transmission channel under impulsive noise channel is required. In this paper, a channel estimation scheme for OFDM transmission under the class A impulsive noise channel using the pilot symbols is proposed. In the proposed scheme, channel estimation and reduction of impulsive noise is iteratively applied in order to increase the precision of channel estimation. As the results of simulation, the precision of channel estimation was improved and the bit error performance almost equivalent to the ideal channel estimation case could be achieved for data symbols.

Investigation on a new combined impulsive noise mitigation scheme for OFDM transmission 一种新的OFDM传输组合脉冲降噪方案的研究

Impulsive noise mitigation for Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) can be done with a clipping-nulling scheme using two thresholds. We introduce a new combined impulsive noise mitigation scheme, called clipping-replacement-nulling scheme, in which there are three considered thresholds: the clipping threshold Tclip, the replacement threshold Trep, and the nulling threshold Tnull. When the magnitude of a received OFDM sample is above Trep and below Tnull we set it to the average magnitude |x̅| of the noiseless OFDM samples. The simulation results show that an additional action, the replacement action, with a good choice of Trep brings a reduction in the bit error rate.

Fairness of MAC protocols: IEEE 1901 vs. 802.11 MAC协议的公平性:IEEE 1901与802.11

The MAC layer of the IEEE 1901 standard for power line communications employs a CSMA/CA method similar to, but more complex than, this of IEEE 802.11 for wireless communications. The differences between these protocols raise questions such as which one performs better and under what conditions. We study the fairness of the 1901 MAC protocol in single contention domain networks, where all stations hear each other. We examine fairness at the packet level: a MAC layer protocol is fair if all stations share equitably the medium during a fixed time interval. We focus on short-term fairness, that is, over short time intervals. Short-term fairness directly impacts end-user experience, because unfair protocols are susceptible to introduce substantial packet delays. We evaluate short-term fairness with two metrics: Jain's fairness index and the number of inter-transmissions. We present test-bed results of both protocols and compare them with simulations. Both simulation and test-bed results indicate that 802.11 is fairer in the short-term when the number of stations N is between 2 and 5. However, simulation results reveal that 1901 is fairer in the short-term for N ≥ 15. Importantly, our test-bed measurements indicate that 1901 unfairness can cause significant additional delay when N = 2. Finally, we confirm these results by showing analytically that 1901 is short-term unfair for N = 2.

In this paper we analyze the current deployment of the smart metering by the utilities across the European continent, which is dictated by the EU Directives (2009/72/EC and 2009/73/EC). First we discuss the rollout of smart metering in Europe and the initial finding about the deployed communication technologies. In a second phase, we focus on the position of the Power Line Communication (PLC) in the strategy of power utilities.

Joint iterative channel estimation and guard interval selection for adaptive powerline communication systems 自适应电力线通信系统联合迭代信道估计与保护间隔选择

The classical in-house electrical wires are identified as an attractive medium to enable broadband power line communications (PLC). In PLC systems an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been adopted as physical access scheme to cope with the multipath channel reflections at the receiver end. However, for coherent detection in OFDM the accurate channel estimates are required. Currently, the channel estimation (CE) schemes based on time division multiplex (TDM) and frequency division multiplex (FDM) pilots are foreseen, where the channel delay-time domain windowing is used for noise reduction (denoising) based on the pre-defined guard interval length. In this paper, we present and evaluate a mechanism for efficient CE with adaptive denoising algorithm designed based on mean square error criteria. The method is designed to reduce the noise in the system which is exploited by channel equalizer to improve the system's performance. The adaptive algorithm is used as a driver for the transceiver with adaptive guard interval based on the channel conditions. The algorithm performance is evaluated by computer simulation to illustrate efficiency of the adaptive PLC system.

Enhancement of backoff algorithm in CSMA/CA protocols for broadband PLC 宽带PLC中CSMA/CA协议退退算法的改进

Improvement of communication protocols for energy management purposes has become a challenging part of smart grid systems development. Powerline communications (PLC) has many advantages for being used in this area. Many PLC communication protocols use CSMA/CA channel access schemes on Multiple Access Protocol (MAC) layer. This paper presents an enhancement of the CSMA/CA broadband PLC protocols operation by application of special method for backoff generation. The proposed improvement is applicable to different CSMA/CA protocols. The resulting CSMA/CA schemes maintain interoperability with the original ones. The performance of the improved algorithm is shown by means of a mathematical model and by simulation.
