Summary The Discovery of a Sighraf Graveslab in the Grotlingbo Church on Gotland In the Grotlingbo Church on Gotland, there is an unidentified romanesque graveslab. This article argues that it was carved by the Sighraf workshop which operated around the year 1200. Even though the Sighraf workshop carved mainly baptismal fonts, it is known to have worked on local commissions, such as the Lye Reliquary and the Sproge and the Eke graveslabs. Several features of the Grotlingbo graveslab, such as the style, the iconography, particular motifs, the runic inscription and the type of stone used are examined in relation to other works carved by the Sighraf workshop. These aspects, in conjunction with how the workshop operated demonstrates that the Grotlingbo graveslab is yet another work carved by the Sighraf workshop.

Summary An extensive Russian manuscript containing the iconographer's manual (The Royal Library, Stockholm, Acc. No. 1975–116) presents on 502 pages more than 1400 descriptions of saints along with a great number of motives connected to the church feasts. According to linguistic features, orthography, watermarks and content it was written about 1831 in Northern Russia, probably near Tikhvin. The present article contains a short paleographic description of the manuscript and an analysis of its age and geographic attachment. Such manuals including the textual description of the motives are called iconographer's manuals or iconographie guides in literature. The second type of the manuals, the one with patterns, or figures, is also called iconographie guide, or figurative iconographic patternbook, or podlinnik in Russian. However, in the Russian tradition podlinnik means any kind of manual, with textual description or with patterns. The most clear terminology is to use the term iconographer's manual on both t...

Summary The St. Jerome panel of Hieronymus Bosch's triptych of the Hermit Saints in the Ducal Palace, Venice reveals an entirely new conception of the theme that unites his own Northern symbolism with Italian stylistic characteristics and motifs. In particular, comparisons with St. Jerome images by Jacopo Bellini provide compelling evidence for Leonard Slatkes’ suggestion of a Venetian journey for Bosch around 1500. This fusion of traditions combined with Bosch's creative intermingling of Jerome's temptations in the desert and the wickedness of Bosch's own world create an ingenious warning and provide a righteous example for the viewer to emulate.
