The purpose of this paper is to address the role that fictions play in the reconstruction of the collective memory of a traumatic past, in particular, that of ETA violence. We will pay attention to both the process through which works of fiction that try to portray that recent past become relevant and to the kind of mixed reactions about their meaning and value to tell what happened faithfully. The narrative effort seems to face difficulties to build a collective memory that reaches agreement on its accuracy and appropriateness. The same is true of the institutional review of the past, which is the object of tensions that have been conceptualized as the "battle for the story". The idea is to propose a reflection that delves into the potential of narratives to make sense of the past, identifying the tensions and keys that result in the re-mythologizing of violence and that are expressed as suspicion against the crudeness and authenticity of certain stories. In order to do so, we will look at the link between memory, history, and fiction and will question the assumption that a narrative can and should be elaborated free of moral positions and value judgments. This is especially decisive when the context to which it refers is that of violence legitimized by a part of society. Finally, we will emphasize the power of fiction to define the world, highlighting its capacity to intervene and add meaning to our understanding of reality.

The article analyzes —at a local level— the process of spatialization, materialization and transmission of one of the core ideas that shape the official memory of Argentina: overseas immigrants' arrival during the period between 19th and 20th centuries and the role played by those actors in the population configuration of a harmonious crisol de razas . Based on the description of three sites of memory located in the city of Berisso, the commemorative practices developed and the material objects vested with memorial senses exhibited, we show the capacity that different civil society actors (local ethnic associations) and the State (the municipality) have had to establish the overseas immigrants as mythical figures of the local/national memory: heroes, pioneers and founding fathers of the community. Not only does this process relegate other actors present in the history of the city/nation (bordering immigrants, internal migrants) to a marginal place but it also silences/forgets any sign of conflict that could have occurred during the integration process of overseas immigrants with the society from Berisso/Argentina. Thus, based on the material elaborated during extensive qualitative fieldwork, the article shows that the legitimized figure in the sites of memory, in the commemorative practices and the analyzed objects is not any immigrant's figure, but that of the overseas immigrant, successfully integrated with the native culture and respectful of local institutions.

In this text I would like to propose a discussion on Transitional Justice (JT) within the framework of what I will define, with an ethnographic vision, as “transitional scenario”. I would like to argue that transitions, beyond a formalized and codified language that constitutes the hegemonic field of JT, refers also to a cultural and social phenomenon insofar as the categories that constitute the world of war and conflict or the categories in which we inhabit it collapse in order to produce others. The idea of a "transitional scenario" constitutes a matrix of analysis of what is essentially the management of uncertainty. This paper is based on my ethnographic work in South Africa, Colombia, and Peru, and seeks to understand this scenario as a device in which the materialization of the State, through a series of practices of spacialization, naming and terrotorialization taking into account examples of Colombia, is constitutive of new communalities. At the end, the article proposes the need of a critical studies agenda on political transitions.

This paper aims to examine in depth, in order to avoid them, some of the consequences of the fact that the social sciences began to develop in Western European countries during periods in which the construction of modern, national, representative and democratic states was being sought. If these sciences adopted their theoretical and empirical profile associated with this project of nationalization and democratization of the state, reaching a prophetic dimension that draws the future of the populations of the planet, there is room for other sociologies, more sensitive to the diversity of modernizing projects, which seek to get rid of this prophetic character without losing the conceptual and theoretical richness of our classics. In this sense, this text problematizes the idea of political transition, rethinks the implicit question embedded, as any transition, in it (what is the relationship between power and the individuals subjected to it?) and thus seeks to implement a more open and analytical and less prophetic and evaluative social theory. The work ends by referring to the analysis of the transition in the West African countries of former French colonization, where the advent of a national democratic state does not seem feasible, but where creative processes of relationship between politics, religion and society are taking place.

This article begins discussing a definition of the concept of identity, in order to be able to, departing from it, assess the specific contribution to it that can be read in Max Weber’s work. Not being a concept in which Weber dwelt on much —in fact, it begun to be used in the social sciences much later—, his approach on the constitution of communities, specially of political and religious ones, shows the author’s interest in the communal bonds. Looking at the identity processes he discusses, i.e. ethnical or status groups, the importance assigned to the subjective role in their constitution becomes apparent, as much as the irrational factors that allow for these social bonds. The historical prospective of Weber stresses the communal relationships established around world religions, and the incapability of Modernity to reproduce them in their intensity. Notwithstanding this, modern politics has for him the possibility of establishing communal bonds that may emulate the intensity those bonds used to have, for instance around the national problem. In the last section, the article points out to the potentiality of contemporary populism to allow the rise of new identities and, by this, to encourage new paths for politics.
