IoT heterogeneity and diversity have promoted the creation of different and isolated IoT systems. The EU has funded several research projects in order to promote interoperability and quality aspects for IoT platforms. More significantly, the IoT-ARM was conceived as a reference architecture to derive concrete IoT platforms and establish a common understanding on quality requirements between different platforms. This paper describes SMARTIE, an IoT platform that is compliant with the IoT-ARM and promotes the most important quality aspects for the Smart Home, that is, security and interoperability.

In this paper, an efficient quantization parameter (QP) assignment method is proposed for MPEG internet video coding (IVC). QP is one critical control point in video compression performance. Instead of assigning the same QP value for each frame, the allocation of different QP values can increase the coding efficiency of standardized video codecs such as AVC/H.264 and HEVC along with the special group of structure (GOP) of those codecs. However, it has not been thoroughly investigated in general IPPP coding structure whether the QP variation is clearly effective or not. Thus, an efficient QP assignment method that assigns QP values frame-by-frame is proposed for the general IPPP coding structure. The proposed method exploits the advantages of hierarchical QP variation frame-by-frame. Extensive experiments were conducted to figure out how much QP variation improves coding performance upon internet video coding (IVC) encoder that has the general IPPP coding structure and is recently being developed by MPEG experts. As a result, the proposed method significantly increased the coding efficiency compared to the existing IVC test model 10.0, showing a 9.9% gain on average in terms of BD-rate.

We proposed an automatic Linked Open Data (LOD) conversion system of tweet data associated with tourist spots. This system contributes to the cost reduction of LOD based information system for tourism in terms of data maintenance and language translation. In our system, tweet data at a tourist spots will be converted into LOD automatically based on tourist spots location information. We also developed the proposed system to evaluate our idea. Through experiments using the proposed system, we confirmed the effectiveness concerning to automatic LOD conversion and precise location analysis.

In this paper, we propose a new indoor positioning method based on a SkyPlot mask. An advantage of the proposed method based on the finger printing approach is a little observation at each reference point in comparison with the conventional one. This is achieved effectively by creating the SkyPlot mask. The proposed method determine a rover position by matching the satellite orbit information with the SkyPlot mask.

We develop a navigation system considering traffic accident risk. After putting the start and goal points by a user, the system suggests a detour; a better route contains low risk against traffic accidents. Users can also contribute to register risk values to the dangerous points. We define cost functions to generate reasonable and safer route paths within the given geometrical area. The system was evaluated by examinees with field tests, then marginal reputations from them.

By the near-field and side-view eye camera, the eyeball in captured images is ellipse shape generally, and it is not always circular shape. In this paper, fast iris ellipse fitting based visible light gaze tracking system is studied for wearable eye tracker applications. After pre-processing, the iris contour is recognized by the two-stage binarizations, and the binaried iris contour is applied to select the possible candidate points for iris ellipse fittings. After the two-stage Random Sample Consensus (RANSAC) based fast iris ellipse fittings, the centers of ellipse eyeballs are estimated effectively, and the gaze tracking is worked efficiently after calibrations. By experiments, the average estimated errors of iris ellipse centers are smaller than 10 pixels, and the horizontal accuracy of gaze tracking is ranged from 0.85 to 1.51 degrees. Finally, the proposed design performs up to 183.5 frames/sec by a personal computer with 3.4GHz operational frequency.

Due to the much more concerns are focused on the environmental protection and the development of green technology, various micro- and small-scale renewable energy systems are appeared in our daily live. Meanwhile, small wind turbines, designed for lower costs and to overcome land space limitation, are widely integrated into household electrical system. Injection of wind power into an electric grid may affect the power quality, especially for the considerable sizes are provided. Since the power quality must often comply with certain requirements on electric utility grid code or nation regulations, the power quality impact should thus be assessed prior to installation. Unlike the large-scale wind turbines which are optional required to perform power quality measurements during certification testing phase, small wind turbines are often neglected in these measurements due to their smaller capacities are easily thought not to impact the systems. But, considering the high penetrations of small wind turbines may be connected to the future electric systems, this paper aims to perform the power quality measurements for a commercial small wind turbine. The main observations of this study on the grid concerning power quality are voltage/current fluctuations, flicker, harmonics for a small wind turbine with power electronic conversion device and other parameters like active and reactive powers.

In current Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)-based Internet of Things (IoT) applications, people may need to prove their identities to Internet services to obtain credentials to pair with IoT devices. In this case, the bluetooth MAC address of a device could be used to increase the security of pairing processes. However, current BLE devices, especially smartphones, usually use random addresses to prevent others from tracking the devices with original bluetooth MAC addresses. While devices cannot identify one another with addresses, using random address may lead to higher security risk. This study uses a smart vehicle from a major Taiwanese brand as an example to illustrate this security impact of using BLE random addresses. Afterwards, the study provides generalized security requirements based the example scenario and a scheme to fulfill the requirement.

In the era of cloud computing and the Internet of Things, fast product and service evolution has become a strong competitive advantage. Thus, the business model, business process, and system & software of the target product and service should be designed in an integrative and interactive way to satisfy key business goals (i.e., the creation of customer value and sustainable profit). We refer to this new integrative and interactive design approach that includes the business model, business process, and system & software design as "innovation design." Since business goals may change dynamically due to the speed of product/service evolution, how the innovation design should be verified and validated remains a key question. This paper proposes a new framework for the verification and validation of innovation design.
