Research grows as a culture within the realm of an academic institution because of certain research motivators espoused by their stakeholders. The status of research culture in the context of private higher educational institutions (HEIs) in the CALABARZON Region-Philippines remains unexplored. This study ascertained reasons and conditions that motivate HEIs in CALABARZON to engage in research. Three private HEIs in the region served as respondents. Three phases of data gathering were adopted: survey, key informant conversation, and focus group discussion. Results showed that a centralized or institutional research system is a triggering factor for a research culture to grow. A sustainable reward system was also seen as a motivator to do research. The study concluded that research is an academic function that must be managed and nurtured well, a great part of which is the incentive system. Findings were used as basis for policy recommendations to the Commission on Higher Education. Explicit communication is imperative in building up relationships among members of organizations and institutions. This study described, critically analyzed and interpreted the linguistic features of the accessible print communications, which in effect brought out the communication culture, social and power relations of the members of the three tertiary institutions in Davao City. Results revealed a mixed sentence construction of declaratives and imperatives, actives and passives. Gratulatory and courteous expressions like More Power, God Bless, Please, Kindly, May I, marked significant presence in the prototype opening and closing fragments which these expressions have become standard parts of these memorandums. Variation among the structures was the divine exaltation (predictive of the culture of the university) found in the initial portion of the memorandums. Also noted was the legalese, archaic and formal tone, hereby and of the memorandum of the university president that was echoed in the memorandums of the student organization officers. An intensified writing training program in two categories: for new administrators and student officers have to be effected. Learning to write well is keeping a balanced diet. Toward this end, we sampled 250 freshmen students in Bohol Island State University, Clarin, Bohol, to determine their writing proficiency in identifying and revising sentences with structural slips, basis for a proposed Writing Proficiency Program. Descriptive correlational survey method, with interview and observation techniques, was used. As instrument, questionnaire with 1-hour item test revealed their profile and writing drawbacks. Manifested much difficulty was in identifying wordy sentences (91.52%) and stringy (97.40%) in transformation. Although they were proficient (2.68) in identification, but poor (3.28) in transformation. Chi-square contingency test showed significant result where the computed t-value (2.892) was greater than the tabular value (1.98). This implies that the hardest the sentence errors to identify, the hardest for them also to transform. Consequently, a designed 11-session Writing Proficiency Program is in order. This will address not only to this institution but throughout the other 5 campuses of BISU System. When approved by the Board of Regents, this becomes a graduation requirement for all students. Passers will receive Certificate of Merits. For its sustainability, such program shall be managed by competent language professorsand competent heads of offices who would be de-loaded and afforded honoraria. Like many other martial arts, arnis, the Philippines’s national martial art and sport characterized by stick-assisted or bare-handed fighting, is usually taught using methods often regarded as teacher-centered. Recently, however, physical education instructors have shown deepening interest in learning-oriented and student-centered approaches, which often fall under the umbrella concept of constructivism. This four-week experimental study using the post-test-only control group design compared two methods for teaching the 12 basic LAPUNTI (Labangon, Punta Princesa, Tisa)-style arnis strikes: the lecture-demo, generally held to be a teacher-centered method, and the printed self-instructional module, generally regarded as learner-centered and believed to foster active learning. The comparison was based primarily on post-test scores from the 47 students of the University of the Philippines Cebu who participated in the study. The rubrics-scored post-test was designed to determine the masterful and accurate execution of the basic LAPUNTI arnis strikes. Both experimental and control groups earned “Very High” mean scores, indicating comparable levels of post-instruction student performance. No significant difference was found between the lecture-method and self-instructional module method. The study found that the self-instructional module method was just as effectiveas the lecture-demo method in the teaching of LAPUNTI-style arnis strikes. Several indicators of organizational efficiency that beset the Philippine System of Higher Education have been identified. In pursuit of total quality management in Philippine Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), the study determined the best fit model of organizational efficiency of State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) in Region XI, Philippines. The study employed descriptive correlational design and structural equation model with 369 faculty members who participated as respondents. Sets of survey questionnaires were also used as instruments in obtaining information from the respondents. The findings revealed that the overall level of visionary leadership of school administrators was high; team building competence was high; conflict resolution skills was barely high; and organizational efficiency of SUCs was high. Meanwhile, the visionary leadership, team building competence, and conflict resolution skills of school administrators were significantly correlated (p<0.01) with organizational efficiency. The commitment, accountability, shared goals, valuing, and mapping were found out to be the best predictors to achieve organizational efficiency. Finally, the most model parsimony for organizational efficiency of SUCs in Region XI, Philippines was the level of team building competence of school administrators, which passed all the conventions of a good model fit. The use of pair programming in the introductory to programming course offers an increased level of reasoning, collaboration and greater transfer of concept from one student to another. The study aimed to determine the effective team compositions that do pair programming as pedagogy in determining work output performance and satisfaction. This study utilized the repeated-measures design using personal traits such as personality, motivation and IQ in the composition of teams. A total of 72 respondents joined the experiment grouped using the permutation with repetition. The instruments used are standardized exams, modified questionnaires test with reliability and activities that were validated by panel of experts. The study revealed IQ is a contributing factor in the work output performance and openness to experience personality shows a significant relation to students ’ satisfaction. Moreover, the pair programming increases the confidence level of students but decreases in communication. This study found out the need to strengthen the orientation on the importance of communication in order to obtain successful collaboration and learning.

The quest for better strategies in teaching is a never-ending process. This scenario is heightened more by the myriad online instructional materials fit for classroom use. The study aimed to determine the effectiveness of video lecture materials for statistics proficiency of first year students of Davao Doctors College. The researchers employed quasi-experimental design that involved purposively chosen 31 students for the control group and 26 students for the experimental group. The control group received traditional instruction while the experimental group utilized video lecture materials as the instructional tool. The questionnaire consisted 50 multiple choice items and established a reliability index of .82. This investigation used t-test analysis to establish the same level of statistics proficiency among the students before the conduct of the study. The study concluded that both learning strategies were effective in teaching students the basic concepts of statistics as indicated by the significant improvement of their pre-test to posttest scores. Although the posttest results of the students who were taught using video lecture materials were higher than those supervised using lecture method, the significance of this difference was never established. Thus, the use of video learning material as an instructional tool in statistics is equally effective with the traditional lecture method. Many studies in the past have established the positive association of self-efficacy to academic motivation and achievement. To substantively improve the understanding of learner’s self-efficacy, education researchers must need to explore how it is structured. This study proposed a structural model of Physics self-efficacy (PSE) and outlined its relationshipswith conceptions of learning Physics (CLP) and approachesto learning Physics (ALP) through structural equation modeling. Three questionnaires from Tsai (2008) were adapted for a field survey that was carried out to 317 fourth-year students randomly chosen among seven national high schools in the east district of the division of Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines to measure the scales on PSE, CLP and ALP. Correlation and path analyses showed that CLP has significant relationship with ALP. Consequently, the ALP also has significant relationshipto PSE. Specifically, both the students’ low-level and high-level conceptions of learning physics exerted positive influence to surface and deep motives and strategies in their approaches in learning the subject. Further, the students’ ALP inferred direct contribution to PSE than the CLP. These results provide valuable information in this area to effusively understand the nature and process of learning physics pertinent to other metacognitive variables.
