Mathematics is taught in isolation from other subjects and often lacks creative or artistic flair; hence, students often get bored and do not pay attention in class. This study ascertained the effects of background music on students’ achievement, habits of mind, test anxiety, and disposition. The instrument used were the researcher-made mathematics achievement test, test anxiety rating scale, and disposition rating scale which underwent validation through a panel of experts. The result showed that the pretest mean scores in mathematics achievement of all the three groups were “low.” The pretest mean scores in habits of mind of the three groups were “not developed.” The pretest mean scores in test anxiety of groups A and B were both “moderate” while group c was “high.” The pretest mean scores in disposition to music of groups A and c were both “partially liked” while group B was “liked.” As observed, all the background music used had an impact on the improvement of the students’ scores in mathematics. The results of the study served as bases for the development of music-enhanced mathematics program. Physics is perceived as a difficult subject for secondary and tertiary students. A measurement of students’ attitude towards Physics must be obtained in finding ways of enhancing the teaching and learning in the colleges. Thus, this study is conducted to determine the attitude of engineering students towards physics and its relation to their academic achievement. Descriptive research design was employed in the study. Mean, standard deviation and Pearson product- moment coefficient of correlation were utilized in analyzing the data gathered. Results revealed that the students have a negative attitude towards physics subject, and their academic achievement of the subject is found to be fair or low. Further, a significant relationship was established between the students’ attitude toward Physics and their academic achievement. It is concluded that their low level of academic achievement in physics is the result of their negative attitude towards the subject. Hence, students’ negative attitude to physics influences low academic achievement. Keywords Science Education, Physics, attitude, academic achievement, descriptive design, Surigao City, Philippines

This study aimed to determine yield and production constraints of peanut inCagayan Valley using Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer; analyze yieldgaps between simulated and actual yield, and provide decision support to optimizeproduction. Simulation results using CSM-CROPGRO sub-model of DSSAT showed thathighest potential yield is 2,267 kgs. / Hectare when planted in October 15 under rainfedcondition. Under non-stressed conditions in the dry season, the potential yield is 4,805 kgs./hectare planted in December 15. From 10 years of yield data, gap between farmer’s yieldcompared with rainfed potential ranges from 153 to 2,116 kgs./ hectare. Low rates ofnitrogen application and pests and diseases were the factors causing yield gaps. The DSSATprogram also captured the effect of prolonged drought in the last quarter of 2009 whichresulted to underestimated yield, and the effect of warm weather in 2004 which showedlowering of potential yield by 50%. Regional analysis of peanut yields showed that centraleastern part is more productive for rainfed conditions during the dry season; whereassouthern part including Quirino and Ifugao is more suitable to producing peanut during thewet season due to cooler temperature.

Any kind of assessment has great potential to draw students’ attention. As a parent of a two-year-old girl, I find teaching and learning very natural when we play together. However, as a teacher of nearly hundred students, I find itimportant to use teaching methods that support active and deep learning.Session with peer and self-assessment utilises motivation to facilitate students’learning. Such session helps gain a better understanding of marking, assessment, and teacher’s expectation. This paper describes a teaching session of only 50minutes that effectively incorporates peer and self-assessment for formativepurpose. The students taking part in the peer and self-assessment activity studyat a Sino-British cooperative university where teaching is in English. Followingthe approach of Dangel and Wang (2008), I combined the principles for goodpractice of Chickering and Gamson (1987) with the proposed learning outcomesof Anderson and Krathwohl (2001). Students’ feedback shows that the intendedlearning outcomes can be achieved. Getting marks from peers and marking thework of peers are useful for students’ own learning. As a result, peer and selfassessmentactivities arebeneficial elements for teaching and learning in highereducation. Physical fitness is the ability to carry out daily tasks with vigor, alertness andwithout undue fatigue to enjoy leisure time pursuits and to meet unforeseenemergencies. Thus, any improvement in an individual’s fitness improves his or her health and well-being. This study evaluated physical fitness activities, which findings could be used as basis in designing a physical fitness program for the facultyof the University of Southern Mindanao. The study utilized the descriptive surveymethod. To determine the physical fitness activity indices of the faculty members,a questionnaire was used. T-test was used to compare the physical fitness activityindices of USM faculty members considering their sex, age, and designation. Thefindings of the study reveal a highly significant difference in sports and leisureactivity indices between male and female respondents. A significant difference inthe physical fitness activity indices considering the respondents’ designation wasalso found. The finding implies that the respondents with and without designations have the same measure of physical activity and leisure index. Folk dance as an academic program has received less attention and interestdue to the rise of globalization that in turn makes culture adopt modernbehaviors. It is very evident with how people react and prefer modern, pop, andhip hop dances. This study was conducted to find out the acculturation andinterest of the Physical Education teachers towards teaching folk dances in theTertiary Schools, in Davao City. Using descriptive correlation method, adoptedsurvey questionnaire with mean, t-test and Pearson r as data analysis tools, itwas found out that there was a significant relationship between the acculturationand interest level of the P.E. teachers in teaching folk dance. The findings ofthe study confirm the theory of Leal (2011) which states that acculturationcan be considered as one significant factor affecting a person’s ability to impartculture through experiences and moreover of interest in the preservation of itsown culture to be able to recognize his national identity. To have an in depthacquisition of knowledge about folk dance, it is recommended that the teachersshould update themselves with issues and concerns about Philippine folk dances in order to Gin opportunities to develop their skill especially in imparting theirown cultural heritage - folk dances. Lecture is a common method used in college teaching. Various researchescomparing lecture and more active methods in relation to students’ performance presented mixed views on the effectiveness of the lecture. This research aimed to compare the traditional lecture and self-regulating learning method in relation tostudents’ achievement in Biological Science. The study used quasi-experimentalmethod using non-equivalent group pretest-posttest design. Two intact classeswere used with 39 students in each class. A total of 78 first year students wereincluded in the study. The two groups were randomly assigned to the twoteaching methods. One group was taught through lecture while the other groupthrough self-regulated learning (SRL) method. Comparability of the studentswas based on their pretest scores in Biological Science. The study was conductedwith an observer. Teacher-made achievement test, course teaching manual, andcourse reader were used in the study. Results revealed that both lecture andSRL methods increased students’ achievement in Biological Science. However, students in the traditional method obtained higher mean pretest, posttest, andmean gain scores than students exposed to SRL method. Lecture as a teachingmethod should not be entirely replaced but also integrated with other methodswhenever it is appropriate. In linguistics, common errors in writing, especially by the non-nativespeakers of English, are beneficial for analysis. Common errors written by theacademic journal contributors especially by the Indonesian authors are typical.Since English in Indonesia is a foreign language, the articles submitted to thejournal may have errors. When editing these articles, some common errors arefound. This research attempted to investigate common errors in English writtenby the academic journal contributors from Indonesia. It is a descriptive researchusing Error Analysis (EA) and Contrastive Analysis (CA) theories. The data weretaken from 15 articles submitted by the Indonesia contributors of the accreditedacademic journals Ventura published by STIE Perbanas Surabaya. First, they wereanalyzed before they were edited and then classified according to the types oferrors. From this, common errors were identified. After this, they were describedbased on the morphological and sentence levels. Finally, possible treatment can be asserted. The results show that there are six types of common errors such as morphological levels: a) Head-Modifier, b) Agreement, c) To-Infinitive andsentence level: Dangling, Agreement, Passive Construction, and Perfect Tense. Itcan be generalized that most of the common errors are due to L1 system so thatCA for L1 with L2 is required.

eachers’ commitment is identified as one of the most critical factors in the success and future of education. Meanwhile, evidences presented at the UNESCO International Conference on Education in 1996 showed that deterioration ofthe working conditions of teachers caused demoralization, abandonment of theprofession, absenteeism, and negative impact on the quality of education. Todetermine the relationship between levels of promotion of cultural competenceand affective commitment of faculty of tertiary schools in Davao Region wasthe primary objective of this study, which used the descriptive-correlationalmethod with mean and Pearson r coefficient as statistical tools. The study revealsthat there is a high level of promotion of cultural competence in the area ofcurriculum, faculty, and student services program, research and development, andcommunity extension program. Activities promoting cultural competence werehighly observed in the tertiary schools in Davao Region. It was also found thatthe level of affective commitment of the faculty was high in terms of perceivedorganizational support, organizational commitment, organizational rewards, procedural justice, and direct supervisor’s support. Traditional laboratory chemistry experiments are often constrained by cost.Alternatively, the researcher developed a General Chemistry Laboratory Moduleof Small-Scale Experiments that can be performed individually by tertiaryfreshmen at lesser expense. It includes five experiments aligned with the Trendsin International Mathematics and Science Study TIMSS’ topics in Chemistry;hence, also offers public secondary schools the prospect of extensive chemistrylaboratory capability that can upgrade their performance in the TIMSS’assessment in science. A non-equivalent pretest-posttest control group design wasused to investigate the effects of small-scale and traditional chemistry experimentson achievement, conceptual understanding and level of participation of theexperimental and control groups respectively. Validated and reliability-testedmultiple-choice tests measured achievement while concept maps with very stronginter-rater reliability assessed conceptual understanding. The experimental group showed greater percent gain in achievement and conceptual understanding, and a strong association between the variables. The independent t-test found nosignificant difference between experimental and control groups in achievementand conceptual understanding but the level of participation scored through aresearcher-made rubric gave a higher average for the experimental group. Onthe basis of achievement, conceptual understanding, and level of participation, small-scale chemistry experiments were found to be appropriate substitutes fortraditional laboratory experiments - pedagogically effective with added values ofbeing environment-friendly and cheap.
