Outcomes of Curricular Enhancement in a Health Program: LPU CAMP Experience 健康项目课程改进的结果:LPU夏令营的经验

Higher educational system has gone through substantial reforms and changes vis-a-vis curriculum innovation over the past years. The evaluation of a revised pro­gram is one of the most relevant courses of action done when curriculum change is to be implemented. One of the main reasons is that it is a chance for practitioners to test for themselves if their plan is working. It also serves as an identification of the strengths and weaknesses of the said intervention. This study was conducted to assess the results of the implementation of the Bachelor of Science in Medical Labo­ratory Science program. It employed descriptive survey using two types of self-made questionnaire, the Likert scale and open-ended type survey. Likewise, data on the results of the graduates’ licensure examinations and status of employment were also analyzed and correlated. Eighty two graduates from 2010 to 2012 of the enhanced Medical Technology program of LPU-Batangas and 13 chief medical technologists from identified affiliate-hospitals were surveyed about their perception on the at­tainment of the objectives, the realization of the core competencies as well as the supposed strengths and weaknesses of the program. Results showed that objectives were achieved alongside the significant improvements in the board performance and employment rate were noted. This study can be used as a pilot study for other higher education institutions with the same health program. This can also be used as a basis for a curricular reform by assessing the different parameters that were identified. Technology-Based Instructions: Continuous Inapplicability of Assessment Models in American Corporate Universities 基于技术的指导:评估模型在美国企业大学的持续不适用性

American corporate universities transformed the teaching methodology from a traditional to technology-based instructions, but have failed the application of reliable assessment models. Current trends recognize commitment to education as an essential tool to reach sustained competitive advantages. Assessment information is necessary and valuable to improve the efficiency and productivity of companies, develop competitiveness, and ensure survival in the globalization era. The study examined training assessment models, knowledge level, and the effectiveness of various assessment models practiced by corporate universities found in U.S.A. territories. A descriptive study was conducted through a validated questionnaire by a panel of experts and a pilot study. Available sampling was used consisting of corporate universities, members of an internationally recognized trade and manufacturing organization. Data were collected; analyzed using cumulative frequency-percentage analysis and tabulated using SPSS, version 20.0. Findings showed that 99.7% of the participants recognized the effectiveness of the models and techniques for training assessment, but 82% did not apply any model to assess training results and 99.2% did not have full knowledge of the assessment process. Only 11.3% used indirect techniques for assessment. The researchers concluded that corporate universities in U.S.A. territories sparingly apply any assessment model to evaluate trainings results despite technology-based instructions. The Preference for Global and Problem- Solving Strategies by Malaysian Students and Support Strategies by China Chinese Students as Metacognitive Reading Strategies among TESL Students in the University of Malaya, Malaysia 马来西亚马来亚大学TESL学生的元认知阅读策略:马来西亚学生对全局策略和问题解决策略的偏好和中国学生对支持策略的偏好

Selection of a reading strategy is a critical factor in development of students’ comprehension and critical thinking skills. This study examined the level of reading strategy utilized by students when reading English academic text and investigated if there were any significant differences between Malaysian and Chinese students in terms of metacognitive awareness and perceived use of metacognitive reading strategies. A total of 55 second year and third year TESL students (31 Malaysian and 24 China Chinese) in the University of Malaya (UM), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia completed 30-item questionnaires adopted from a Survey of Reading Strategies (SORS) questionnaire. The result indicated a high level of reading strategy using metacognitive reading strategies among all the students. Visualizing strategy was the most popular item that students “looked at the title before reading to get a hint about text content”. T-test result showed that there were significant differences in the use of the two categories of strategies; global and problem-solving strategies. Malaysian students demonstrated higher level of using global and problem-solving strategies compared to their China counterparts. Therefore, university reading courses ought to emphasize all global, problem-solving, and support strategies. Lecturers should also emphasize on reading itself. The result of this study served as the basis for achieving the students’ metacognition ability. Rido Culture: Its Impact to the Maranaos' Contemporary Educational Aspirations 里多文化:对马拉纳奥人当代教育愿望的影响

The Maranaos are practicing rido, a long time bloody culture wherein their families since in the past fought among themselves because of some feuds which greatly affected their plans, ambitions, and dreams in life. This knowledge led to determine the impacts of rido culture among the Maranaos specifically to their contemporary educational aspirations. The study also directed to answer the questions on the causes and modes of rido settlement as perceived by the secondary teachers, parents, and students and was conducted in the municipality of Balo-i, Lanao del Norte, Philippines. The descriptive research design was employed and utilized the questionnaire and interview in data gathering. Frequency counts, percentages distribution, and weighted mean were the statistical tools applied in analyzing the data. It was revealed that the respondents were very responsive and had different views to the causes of rido in the community but murder and theft were the most frequently cited causes. The impacts of rido culture to their educational aspirations were mostly negative. As to the perception of the parent-respondents, majority responded on the hindrance of education, financial burden, community relationship was highly affected, and cannot cooperate to the school activities. However, in terms of the perception of the student-respondents, majority regarded that it greatly affected them as to their academic performances, disturbed them in gathering and organizing their projects and assignments. With the above revelations, it can be concluded that the rido culture really can ruin one’s life. Academic Dimensions of Student Performance across Class Size 跨班级规模学生表现的学术维度

Nowadays, the increasing class size is a growing concern among State Universities and Colleges of the Philippines. The study attempted to determine the academic dimensions of the student performance across class size among sophomore college students in Mindoro State College of Agriculture and Technology-Calapan City Campus. Descriptive-comparative method of research was employed in the study. Record analysis was used to gather the academic performance in English, Filipino, Mathematics and Natural Science of the sixty-five subjects who belonged to small, average and large class sizes selected through stratified random sampling technique. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage and mean were utilized to describe the performance of the students in four disciplines. Results showed that students perform best in Filipino compared with their performances in English, Filipino, Mathematics and Natural Science across various class sizes. Using F-test analysis, the study found out that students who belonged to small class size differ significantly in their performance in English, Filipino and Natural Science. This result was similarly noted among students who belonged to both average and large class sizes. Further, results revealed that student groups differ significantly in their performance in four disciplines across class size. Generally, with these results, it can be inferred that class size has influenced differences in academic dimensions of student performance and production of their learning. The parallel Master of Arts in Education: curriculum and instruction of art education program was introduced in the college of education at King Saud University in the year 2010. This research aim to evaluate the program to identify its weaknesses and strengths. Thus, the objectives of the research are to: identify the efficiency of courses and study plan of the program based on students’ perspectives; identify the level of teaching efficiency of teaching faculty of the program based on students’ perspectives; and, determine statistically significant differences in the responses of the students depending on gender variable. Using descriptive method, forty master’s students (male and female) representing the program’s students in the academic year 2012 participated in this study. The instrument used in this research was the questionnaire. The results indicated that the courses and study plan of the program in general had a high degree of efficiency; however, the results indicated that the inclusion of the research project with other courses in the study plan had a medium efficiency. As for the students’ evaluation of the teaching faculty members’ axis and teaching efficiency, the results indicated a very high degree of efficiency; on the other hand, the faculty members’ acceptance of evaluation directed to them by students came in a moderate level. Students’ Conceptions on Human Organ Systems: The Case of University New Entrants 大学生对人体器官系统的观念:以大学新生为例

The formal study of human organ systems is first introduced to learners in the 4th grade up to 6th grade. This is again taught as learners reach second year high school. This developmental study explored the conceptions of 138 university new entrants taking Biological Sciences. The respondents were asked to draw what they know their body is made up of. The drawings of the organs were analyzed according to their presence and interconnection to form an organ system. These were scored following an adopted seven-point scale. Individual interviews were conducted for verification and affirmation. Results showed that most of the respondents were able to identify two or more internal organs in appropriate positions however indicated no relationship between them. Furthermore, few respondents were able to identify 2 or 3 major organ systems. It can be noted that some respondents were rated level 2 where they were able to identify internal organs but were placed at random locations. It was observed that organs of some organ systems were almost never drawn. A variety of concepts has been found out in the study along with certain misspelled organ names, shapes and locations that need to be addressed too for a better understanding about scientific phenomena including human structure. Actual pedagogical practices begin with beliefs on what constitutes effective teaching. This study examines the relationships between the beliefs in learning theories, differentiation of self, and teaching style (behavior and verbal) of teachers of private secondary schools in Dasmarinas, Cavite. Teachers (n = 301) responded to the My Teaching Style and Profile, Teacher Beliefs in Learning Theories, and Differentiation of Self Questionnaires. Results showed significant relationships between sensing/feeling and sensing/thinking teaching style behavior with to I-position, and emotional reactivity significantly related to sensing/thinking teaching style verbal behavior. Beliefs in some of the learning theories, namely, belief in Erickson’s psychosocial development significantly related to sensing thinking, and intuitive feeling was significantly associated with beliefs in behaviorism. The study concludes that sensing/feeling teachings style was significantly related to beliefs in Kohlberg’s moral development and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Logical Connectors in the Discussion Sections of Research Journal Articles 研究期刊文章讨论部分的逻辑连接器

In research articles (RAs), the writers always express their arguments especially in discussion section. In this case, most of the writers tend to relate one idea to another to make their ideas coherent. This research article is done to investigate the logical connectors used by the writers of research articles, especially the logical connectors of three categories: logical connectors, frame markers, and Code Glosses. These linguistic devices are commonly used by the writers in academic or research articles (RAs). This is a qualitative research using the documents for analysis. These documents are taken from the research articles published in the academic journals which are collected by means of purposive sampling from the discussion sections of the RAs. The instrument used is called Taxonomy of Textual Meta-discourse. The results show that the writers have different strategies in using the logical connectors depending on which point they relate the ideas in the discussion sections. The results are expected to provide the readers with some logical connectors and some perspectives of the strategies of using logical connectors in research writing especially in the discussion sections. It is recommended that the research writers use logical connectors for making the ideas coherent. The results show that the writers have different strategies in using the logical connectors depending on which point they relate the ideas in the discussion sections. The results are expected to provide the readers with some logical connectors and some perspectives of the strategies of using logical connectors in research writing especially in the discussion sections. It is recommended that the research writers use logical connectors for making the ideas coherent. Usage of Instructional Materials among Teacher Education Faculty in Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines 菲律宾新比斯开州教师教育学院教材的使用情况

Some learning takes place from the things that learners hear; more learning takes place from the things that learners see; and, still more learning transpires from what learners do. Hence, the importance of providing adequate, appropriate and varied instructional materials to concretize and substantiate learning. This study is a descriptive research that ascertained the extent of usage of instructional materials of teacher education faculty members of the Nueva Vizcaya State University, School Year 2011-2012. A structured questionnaire was used to gather data from randomly selected teacher education students and teachers. Frequency counts, means, percentages and correlation procedures were employed to treat the collected data. The students thought that teachers use all kinds of instructional materials from time to time while the teachers perceived themselves to habitually use all kinds of instructional materials. Both teachers and students viewed that teachers remarkably consider the characteristics of the different instructional materials when utilizing them in the teaching-learning process. The teachers consider the age and year level of their students as well as their attendance to relevant seminars when using different kinds of instructional materials in facilitating learning. Additionally, the students’ age and gender contribute to the teachers’ effective use of instructional materials with consideration to their characteristics.
