Research Productivity of Business Administration and Accountancy Faculty, University of Northern Philippines, Vigan City 北菲律宾大学工商管理与会计学院研究生产力,维甘市

Faculty members of State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) perform research function in addition to instruction, extension and production. This study was conducted to look into the profile of the published research from year of entry up to year 2008 of the regular faculty members of the First Semester of SY 2008-2009 at the College of Business Administration and Accountancy (CBAA) of the University of Northern Philippines (UNP) as affected by some personal and professional factors. It utilized the correlational design of descriptive method of research. Findings showed that the CBAA faculty is characterized by dominance of members of the female sex, of married status, of middle to senior age, with master’s degree, with academic rank of associate professor, and with official designations. Almost half of them have received monthly salary ranging from P10, 001 – P20, 000. Very few are members of scientific/research organizations. The CBAA faculty have published research since 2000. From 2000 to 2008, a total of 43 researches have been published. These were done by nearly half (19) of the 39 regular CBAA faculty members. More researches were done with co-authors than researches by single authors. Most of these researches are of college and curricular program levels, and over four-fifths were financed personally by the faculty researchers. All the researches were published in research journals and some of them were also disseminated in lecture fora and research dissemination and utilization seminars. One research was disseminated through poster exhibit. Majority of the regular CBAA faculty members have never participated in any research activity since their year of entry to the University up to year 2008. Educational attainment and membership in scientific/research organizations came out as good indicators of faculty research productivity. The Study Skills of First Year Education Students and Their Academic Performance 一年级学生的学习技巧及其学业表现

First year students take time to adjust to college life. A number of priorities are considered in order to survive in the tertiary level. One of which is complying with the academic requirements. The study described the study skills of the first year students in the College of Education, La Salle University, Ozamiz City, Philippines. The framework used in identifying the study skills of the first year students was adopted from Lucas and Corpuz (2007:4).These study skills were correlated to the students’ academic performance using Kendall’s Tau B, Chi-square, and Multiple Regression tests. There were 128 first year students who were taken as respondents of the study. The study reveals that the first year students have the skills in organizing and planning their work, preparing assignments or projects, and note-taking and reading. The students’ skills in organizing and planning one’s work; working with others and utilizing resources and feedback; note-taking and reading; and preparing an assignment/project correlate with their grades. The best predictor of students’ academic performance is note-taking and reading. First year college students need to develop the habit of studying their lessons, reading, and taking down notes to improve their academic performance. Comparison of Paper Pencil Test and Web-based Test Taken by BS Information Technology Students of Leyte Normal University, Philippines 菲律宾莱特师范大学信息技术专业学生纸笔测试与网络测试的比较

Evaluations, tests, and examinations are terms used to assess the knowledge or skills learned or acquired by students. Teachers must implement these tests in the most effective way. Two ways of administering the same test were investigated to gauge whether or not scores are affected by the kind of test taken. A paper pencil test and web-based test were created for the midterm examination of BS Information Technology Fourth Year students. Both examinations have the same content and each has its own policies and procedures. Furthermore, qualitative and quantitative research design was used in this study. A survey was also conducted to determine the perceptions of the respondents about the two tests and the factors that affect their scores. It was found that there was a statistically significant difference between paper pencil test and web-based test; however, there were factors that affected the scores of the respondents and these factors were very vital. The result of this research provides an additional knowledge to future researchers who will study similar topics. Current Climate in Higher Education: Perceptions of International Students in the Philippines 高等教育的当前气候:对菲律宾国际学生的看法

One of the major effects of globalization is the heavy migration all over the world in the past two to three decades. For different purposes related to job, studies, security, religious freedom or other social reasons, millions of people are moving on a yearly basis from a country or continent to another. Students in need of better quality or maybe cheaper higher education are traveling to foreign lands and staying there for four, six, eight, or even more years. They learn from and with people of different cultures, religion, race, and worldviews. Given that globalization has pushed the phenomenon of diversity on most university campuses, it is important for higher education institutions to promote and guarantee equity, diversity, and inclusiveness for all students without distinction of culture, gender, religion, or race. The current study is a survey of the climate of higher education in several higher education institutions with considerable number of international students in the Luzon region of the Philippines. The study aimed at investigating the discriminatory practices that are common in schools that hosts international students. Results revealed that, even though there are areas where international students expressed feeling discriminated against, the climate in higher education institutions is positive for most international students. Project Based Learning: A Sustainable Advocacy For Environmental Education Conservation 以专案为基础的学习:环境教育保育的永续倡导

This paper presents a clear-cut research on how PBL was employed. This contributes to the realistic environmental application by equipping learners in addressing environmental vulnerabilities and threats, which are often compounded to economic devastation. It was an exploratory qualitative research design which employed a case-study method. This study reveals that PBL has a sustainability mechanism once used as advocacy for environmental conservation. The utilization of this endeavour has a strong force to the holistic learning of the students. Likewise, it contributed directly in developing students’ values in line with environmental sustainability through the preservation of communities’ sensitive areas. This is said to be one of the major keys in attaining environmental conservation, since it incorporates economic, environmental and inter-generational learning. An Analysis of the Performance of the University of Northern Philippines in the Licensure Examination for Teachers 北菲律宾大学教师执照考试成绩分析

In the Philippines, one gauge of educational quality is performance of graduates in the licensure examinations of the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC). This study aimed to analyze the performance of the University of Northern Philippines in the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET), 2001 to 2010. It determined the following: profile of the examinees such as sex, specialization and year of graduated; performance along the components of LET; the institutional passing rates; the relationship between LET performance and examinee profile. Using the PRC-LET results, this study employed documentary analysis and correlation research designs. The mean, skewness, kurtosis and correlation analysis were used as statistical treatments. The findings showed negatively skewed distributions of LET scores in general education, professional education and specialization courses. This indicated that, relative to the mean score, there were more examinees who garnered higher scores compared with those who obtained lower scores. The examinees had extreme scores hence, they exhibited platykuric distributions. The institutional passing rates were consistently higher than the national passing rates for LET elementary. Specialization is significantly correlated with LET performance. By focusing on the PRC-LET competencies and DepEd-CHED-NCBTS requirements during the pre-service teaching and learning processes and revising specialization courses, LET performance will be improved. This study serves as exchange information along licensure examination of teachers in response to challenges for global competitiveness. Extent of Extension Services Delivery in Tertiary State Technological Institutions of the Philippines 菲律宾国立高等技术院校推广服务的范围

An extension service is one of the fourfold functions of higher education institutions. This study assessed the extent of implementation of the extension services programs of state technological institutions in a geographic region in the Philippines. The program implementers were sampled to draw data along the aspects of attainment of objectives, program relevance, and effectiveness of the strategies and activities adopted as well as the attainment of objectives, program relevance, and effectiveness of the strategies and activities adopted as well as the extent of the adequacy of resources available to the implementers. The findings showed two of three institutions with favorable results as to attainment of objectives, program relevance and strategies adopted as well as the extent of adequacy of resources in the delivery of services. To address gaps, this study further identified recommendations to enhance the capabilities of implementers such as trainings in extension services delivery, fund sourcing and forging institutional linkages or networking. Beneficial Effects of Ashitaba (Gynura nepalensis): Users’ Testimonies 竹叶的有益作用:使用者的证言

Ashitaba ( Gynura nepalensis , Gynura procumbens , Gynura acutifolia ) is the ashitaba grown in the Philippines. Ashitaba (Angelica keiskei Kodzumi) originated in the Island of Hachijo, Japan. Both ashitaba have been studied by researchers using animals and in test tubes and have been claimed to be anti-oxidant, anti-cancer, antiaging, anti-inflammatory, antihypertensive, and anti-diabetic. Generally, this study aimed to widen the dissemination of the beneficial effects of ashitaba ( Gynura nepalensis ) based from testimonies of users. This study utilized the descriptive method of research with data presented in tabular form and analyzed in textual manner, used quota sampling, interview with guide questions, and frequency and percentage and rank. Findings showed that giving a lighter and healthier feeling, emitting stomach gas and giving a lighter feeling, and giving energy ranks 1, 2, and 3, respectively; on the other hand, aiding in dialysis, treating pharyngitis, goiter, and pain in nipples ranks last among the testimonies of respondents. Based on findings, it is concluded that ashitaba ( G. nepalensis ), is a health enhancer, medicine and good for health maintenance. Further, it is recommended that the result of this study be widely disseminated to be of help particularly to the poor, rich, pharmacologists, food businessmen, researchers, and other interested identities. On-the-Job Training: Demand of Engineering Education Enrichment 在职培训:工程教育丰富化的需求

On-the-job training provides the venue for developing special manipulative skills for engineering students. If it is integrated in the Engineering curriculum, the gap between theory and practice could be minimized or discarded. The competencies required for OJT are computer skills, technical skills, managerial skills, communication skills, and other skills like getting true design assignments; the preferred number of hours for engineering OJT is 240 hours and should be offered during the summer , and the preferred sequence of activities for engineering OJT are 1) one-day orientation on all the skills/competencies needed for engineering OJT; 2) deep orientation on communication and other skills for four days; 3) computer skills in one week; 4) technical skills in 1 week; 5) managerial skills in one week; and 6) integration of all the competencies in 2 weeks. All the above-mentioned competencies should be strictly observed and implemented. In effect, the students could be developed and become competitive and productive. Teachers and Students’ Meaning and View on Grades 师生对成绩的理解与看法

The misunderstandings, conflicts, and frustrations that surround student-teacher communication about grades arise from the disparity between their basic assumptions about what grades mean and how they are derived. Anchored on the perspective of Goulden and Griffin (1997), this causal-comparative study tried to assess students’ and teachers’ perspective on the meaning of grades, and test the hypothesis that conflict on the meaning of grades ceased to subsist in the minds of students and teachers. A total of 39 teachers and 170 students responded the standardized questionnaire and revealed their satisfying experiences of constant conversation about grades. Both even revealed that this conversation sometimes leads to the changing of grades. Further analysis, however, revealed that despite students and teachers’ agreements on some aspects on the meaning of grades, a statistically significant difference between their views were observed whenever grades are understood as information; its impact to students; the process of getting it; and its validity as a measure of mastery of course content. Being able to reject the hypothesis, it is recommended that aside from an intense explanation on the process and the validity of grades, the use of various, authentic, and appropriate tools in evaluating students’ complex performance must be employed.
