This article aims to highlight how the sociology of memory actually corresponds to a sociology of remembering and forgetting. Indeed, if a component of forgetting is always present in memory processes, in order to fully understand the past it is not enough to focus on its visible traces, but it is also necessary to investigate those contents that have been lost, that have not been deposited or that have been prevented from having visibility. In other words, if we normally think of the sociology of memory by assuming memory as remembrance and focusing on its visible traces, we actually have to consider that it simultaneously involves remembering and forgetting; two complementary activities that are not always assumed with adequate balance in sociological analyses of memory phenomena. With this in mind, the article reflects on the different meanings of forgetting and reinterprets the traditions of memory studies in the light of a renewed focus on forgetting issues. Thus, the paths of forgetting in the main paradigms of memory will be traced and discussed: that of the social frameworks of memory, that of the critical-emancipatory paradigm, that of the places of memory, and that of memory work.

Today our daily life appears a multifaceted and articulated mix of ordinary and extraordinary, stability and change: a context inside which a range of latent “possibilities” is nested, on which human creativity committed to building the future seems to find expression (Jedlowski 2017, Augé 2012, Appadurai 2014). Investigating the theme of spaces and living has a lot to do with reflection on change – and on the subject’s ability to imagine and build the future – because it implies questioning a world that is changing and arouses new expectations and needs. Compared to a period in which, in our country, (little or) almost no reflection was carried out on this phenomenon, the house today appears (to be) one of the universal places from which to try to rethink ourselves and the word we live in. This essay will consider the contribution that some innovative collaborative housing practices, including co-housing, seem to offer to the rethinking of urbanity. Such practices in fact make explicit the inclination to be open to others, the aspiration to care, to feel in tune with the neighbourhood and surrounding spaces, and more generally with the world, in a perspective of trust towards the future.

This contribution is aimed at shedding light on how the concept of utopia is closely linked, both in terms of content and method, to the gender perspective and, more specifically, to feminist reflection. We do so by dwelling on some of the most influential voices that have contributed to the recent rediscovery of utopia as a sociological method and mobilizing force for critiquing and reacting to advanced capitalism and existing arrangements of gender relations. The article closes with some reflections on how utopian realism can enable us to overcome the fear of change in gender relations and counter the risk of “retrotopias”.

Technology is a term that deserves a historical-etymological framing in order to initiate a sociological analysis aimed at developing a utopia that can question the order that the development of technologies is producing in contemporary society under neo-liberal hegemony.

An indissoluble bond holds utopia and childhood together, not only because children are often at the centre of utopian narratives and imaginaries in which they embody salvific roles of corrupt societies – or, specularly in dystopias, that of perturbers of peaceful orders – but because they both evoke promises of radiant futures. Childhood is the symbolic place, the container of our hopes and desires for the future as a society, and utopia is simultaneously the 'place that is not there' and the 'good place' in which we socially project our aspirations for social change in an ameliorative sense. If this consolidated binomial appears self-evident and thus assumes the force of a "dominant discursive regime", it is true that by examining the production of the adult-centred discourse, and putting the children of the present and everyday life back at the centre of reflection, its explanatory tightness and projective force can become object of scrutiny and rethinking. By analysing the social construction of childhood and the role of children as social actors, this essay proposes a parallelism between utopia and childhood and between everyday utopias and children, showing the links that bind them, but also the repercussions of this link both in children's lives and in the prefigurations of ideal societies to imagine and to actualize.

In recent years the study of the future has (re-)emerged and is raising increasing interest in the social sciences. However, this field of research often seems fragmented into different perspectives, as though the common object of study were vague or inconsistent. In line with the pragmatist tradition, this article elucidates the key role played by the future within courses of action, both routine and planned. When routine is broken, projective reasoning emerges and creates a horizon of possibilities that is the precondition of agency capacity. Expectations, imaginaries, and narratives of the future are the constitutive elements of projective reasoning: these are introduced together with some examples of their influence on agency. This framework provides the theoretical ground for analysing the influence of the future in the course of action and it can be applied to a wide range of social dynamics.
