Particularly in societies built on ethnic foundations and where nationalism has been decisive for social cohesion, language is one of the strongest traits of identity. One of the most important traits of Romanianness – nationality – with its functional counterpart, i.e. Romanian as a national language, represents the core value around which other identity components gravitate. In this study I will show in general and in essential terms how it has come to linguistic Romanianness.

The article discusses concepts specific to sociology and social psychology to reveal the role played by cultural heritage in the life of Romanian immigrants. The complementarity between these fields in relation to traditional knowledge allows a better understanding of the socio-cultural dimension of migration. Selfperception theory is applicable to cultural reactions in host countries since subjects often perform ritual or magic gestures without even being aware they were familiar with them. Only then did they conclude that a certain attachment to cultural heritage is manifest. The role of community is underlined in the article from twoperspectives: on a cultural level, it transmits and preserves practices, while on a psychological level the group proves essential in the construct of social identity. In this regard, interviews with migrants from Italy, Spain, and Greece are presented in three sections focused on definitions of the self as part of the community, characteristics of the specific environment that maintains home country practices, and the perspective on the host society.

Homemaking achieved materially and emotionally within a diasporic environment represents an important step in the long process of settling in a foreign country. This paper is devoted to explaining the Romanian concept of “home” as it is perceived by Romanian migrants who lived for long periods of time in western European countries. Interviews with Romanian migrants and Moldovan returned migrants, and participant observation during fieldwork revealed different levels of the psychological state of missing the home they departed from, the emotional underpinnings on having to manage life in two places, the concrete andspiritual significance of homemaking in a foreign country, the psychological undertones of “home” and “host” societies, questions on “identity” and “belonging”, ethnic homeland attachments. The reality of pluri-local and/or trans-local identity, and of multi-located homes and specific transnational lifestyles is compared with Romanian collective memory and imaginary of “home” and the strong territorial attachments that are considered by autochthonous ethnopsychologies as part of the Romanian cultural intimacy. The paper analyses both residence (as the material cultures of home, such as design and commodities, the material world of objects that shape a home environment) and dwelling (meanings, values and beliefs, emotional significance of domesticity). For migrants, the various strategies of homemaking are connected in various ways with homesickness as not only longing for a specific residence, but a feeling of loss of a specific past that is even more accentuated for people in a diasporic condition.

By focusing on three emergent narrative themes, the chapter explores how immigrants recount and make sense of their own experiences and encounters with integration. It considers the concept with relation to other immigrants, Scottish society more generally, and British migration policy. Emphasizing the creative narrative expressions of those most affected by wider discussions of integration, the author calls for the use of ethnographic methods to better examine immigration and integration from a groundlevel perspective.

Although the migration phenomenon is extremely mediated and has been analyzed in countless studies, there are still many ambiguities with regard to conceptualization, the integration of the term in the related field(s) and the development of public policies that would respond to the actual needs triggered by the phenomenon. This study aims at providing conceptual disambiguation, at establishing a historical and epistemic framework and, last but not least, at pointing to a series of anthropological aspects that have been correlated with the evolution of public policies and the respect for individual rights for the past six decades. As a starting point for our study, migration is regarded as a natural historical phenomenon that needs to be accepted and integrated in our contemporary life, as an ingrate component of globalization. Any public policy must be based on the fundamental principle according to which human life stands above anything. Moreover, we have emphasized the need to overcome two profoundly preconceived images of the immigrant that have dominated the collective imaginary for a long time: the intruder/invader and the slave.

Questo articolo pone al centro dell’attenzione il fenomeno dell’investimento da remoto in asset finanziari (trading online), ad oggi una delle macro-aree di maggiore successo dell’industria Fintech. L’obiettivo principale della ricerca è identificare i fattori di rilevanza sociologica che ne hanno catalizzato la crescita, con un focus particolare sul caso dell’Italia. In primo luogo, dal lato dell’offerta, l’espansione di tale pratica nel paese è stata alimentata dal progressivo consolidamento di un articolato ecosistema di servizi digitali per l’investimento. D’altra parte, anche dinamiche legate alla domanda hanno rivestito un ruolo di primo piano: per meglio comprenderle abbiamo condotto uno studio qualitativo su un campione di 25 investitori amatoriali italiani; la nostra indagine mostra che l’espansione del trading online si deve soprattutto ad una diffusa necessità di far fronte a questioni cruciali per gli individui, come la gestione della carriera personale o il reperimento delle risorse finanziarie necessarie alla riproduzione sociale. Il materiale raccolto evidenzia inoltre che, soprattutto per i soggetti più fragili, il legame tra finanza e sfera personale tende ulteriormente a intensificarsi nei momenti di crisi, e la rapida crescita registrata dal settore in occasione della recente emergenza pandemica rappresenta un chiaro esempio di questa dinamica.

Abstract This paper focuses on the representation of food bank users through the lens of Garfinkel's degradation ceremony (1956): that is, a communicative work aimed at transforming an individual’s total identity into a lower social identity, by recalling moral indignation, in order to reassert social norms and reinforcing group solidarity. The aim of this paper is to investigate how representations on users might be put in place in a real life assistance context, as a food bank, and the ways in which this could be framed as a degradation ceremony (Garfinkel 1956): stigmatizing behaviours of the volunteers at the food bank might be framed as a way to reassert the social norm by clearly separating the in-group and the out-group (Goffman 1963): by making the users stay outside waiting, separated from the volunteers, by choosing the food for them without giving space to their desires, by discussing their motives not as contingent and contextual, but as linked to the essence of the individual. For this purpose, the paper will discuss the results of a qualitative research held in two food banks in Turin, Italy, conducted using participant observation and qualitative interviews with users and volunteers.
