The presented paper takes a look at Pavel Vilikovský’s (1941 – 2020) novella Fleeting Snow (2014). It adopts the lens of reception theory and demonstrates the use of the so-called textual gaps and places of indeterminacy (Wolfgang Iser, Wolf Schmid). The selected literary text is specific mainly for its composition and narrator. The story is divided into short and concise segments marked with a number and a letter: The number expresses the theme, the letter the sequence of narration. The textual gaps can be identified at the level of composition, narrator, and metaphor. The reader has to homogenise the heterogeneous elements involved in the production of meaning at the level of narration and composition of the text. However, this does not mean that the reader can identify and remove all textual gaps: these remain objects of reflection even after reading the entire text. The aim of this article is to (1) demonstrate how places of indeterminacy can be understood in a specific literary text, (2) determine which parts of Fleeting Snow can be considered as places of indeterminacy, and (3) determine which places of indeterminacy present the key issues, topics, and aspects of the text.

The article analyses the novel Reštavrácia ([County elections], 1860) by Ján Kalinčiak (1822 – 1871) through the prism of historical documents. The novel takes as its basis the historical events of 1845 – 1846 election campaigns in the Turiec County. The article identifies the historical figures on which the novel’s characters were built. Such reading of this literary work is not methodologically inappropriate – the elections had a significant bearing on the future events connected with historical events central to the building of the Slovak nation and identity. The analysis provided in the article helps understand the historical circumstances and the context of Slovak national revival of the 1860s and 1870s. This referential reading also helps clarify and revaluate Ján Kalinčiak’s position on the matter. At the same time, it provides one of the backgrounds for the literary reading of the novel.

“A Quest for a ‘New Man’: published in Realisms of the Avant-Garde (2020) analyses the work of the Polish Jewish writer Bruno Schulz (1892 – 1942) from the perspective of the category of the “new man”. In his writing, Schulz employed cultural syncretism and eclecticism that aimed at innovation. He paraphrased and intertwined chosen models and formed new semantic entities and combinations. Trying to trace the original myth diluted in various layers of culture, he combined heterogeneous elements derived from mutually antagonistic sources into a homogenous vision. In the construction of his own private mythology from fragments and “shreds of sculptures and statues of gods”, Schulz used various elements of the cultural heritage. This contribution situates Kossowska’s chapter into the context of Schulz’s understanding of his own work as mythologizing the reality and creating private mythology from developing key images of the unconscious orig-inating in childhood. Metamorphoses of entities in Schulz’s literary universe spring from the fermentation of the matter. With regards to the motif of mannequins and the Demiurge, the contribution provides a supplementary context that is relevant for the matter under discussion – Judaism and the creation of golems (R. Lachmann, V. Nelson, M. Benešová) and parodies of Gnosticism.
