This article examines The Political and Confidential Correspondence of Lewis the Sixteenth (1803), by Helen Maria Williams, in which she translates the letters by Louis XVI while she adds her own political commentaries. This translation received negative reviews and one of its harshest critics was royalist emigré Bertrand de Moleville. The first part of this article explores the controversy that surrounded Correspondence and reveals that the letters were forged. The following part analyzes Williams’s political arguments that legitimize the deposition of Louis XVI as the king of France. The last part explores Bertrand’s Refutation, published in 1804. The article concludes that, regardless of the authenticity of the letters, Correspondence is a work that deserves reconsideration as it sheds light into Williams’s participation in the political debates of her time. Besides, the article shows that the misogynistic arguments employed by Bertrand contributed to the invisibilization of Williams’s work.

In La terra dei figli (2016) Gipi propone implicitamente, tra le righe di un racconto post-apocalittico, una riflessione critica sulla scrittura, sugli usi e sui rischi di questa risorsa comunicativa e sulla sua rilevanza quale architrave culturale fondamentale della nostra civiltà. Il contributo indaga questo tema attivando il potenziale ermeneutico di un classico come lo studio di Ernesto De Martino sulle apocalissi culturali e con l’accortezza metodologica di collocare l’opera di Gipi entro la vivace produzione attuale di narrazioni post-apocalittiche – e fra queste, in particolare, di quelle che hanno come protagonisti giovanissimi adulti o adolescenti. Di quest’ultime, complessivamente associate entro il genere ibrido del romanzo post-apocalittico di formazione, si propone un’interpretazione in termini di forma simbolica della post-modernità, secondo il modello teorico-metodologico di Franco Moretti. Emerge in conclusione un atteggiamento di rassicurante riproposizione dei valori culturali della civiltà contemporanea, pur nel contesto dell’immaginario apocalittico, ricco in potenza di valenze critiche e polemiche.

Mística y misionera católica española en Inglaterra, Luisa de Carvajal (1566–1614) legó una cincuentena de poemas espirituales. Este artículo examina la traducción al inglés de uno de ellos, el romance «En una graciosa isleta», texto con el que Georgiana Fullerton concluye su Life of Luisa de Carvajal (1873). Esta biografía, basada en otra escrita por Luis Muñoz en 1632, presenta la vida de la poeta como ejemplo de sacrificio en el contexto de las persecuciones a los contrarreformistas. El estudio del poema traducido se aborda principalmente desde dos ópticas: por un lado, una indagación en las motivaciones y circunstancias editoriales que pudieron rodear la traducción del texto a finales del siglo xix; por el otro, un análisis microtextual del tratamiento de la versificación y los recursos retóricos en que se plasma la visión mística de Carvajal.

The article presents the results of the XVII International Bakhtin Conference held in Saransk (Russia) on July 5-10, 2021. The forum brought together over 100 participants from 22 countries and was held online. The 18 plenary lectures and more than 100 panels and online-discussions focused on the most important questions of the reception of Bakhtin’s heritage, and the influence of the thinker’s ideas on contemporary humanities. Presentations included works in the following areas: biography of Bakhtin, determining the place of his ideas in modern philology, philosophy and other social sciences, the theory and practice of education, and interdisciplinary research. This article analyses and contextualises the work of the conference against the background of the Bakhtin Forums of the 1980s and 2010s, which became an important part of the global Bakhtin Studies, as well as of the recent development of Bakhtin’s heritage in Russia and worldwide. The authors highlight the most important results of the last conference as supplementing and reconstructing Bakhtin’s biography, clarifying the details of the process of dialogical interaction of Bakhtin’s work with his contemporary ideas and the preceding traditions, defining the boundaries of Bakhtin’s influence on the humanities and the natural science, as well as the possibilities of integration of these disciplines under the “sign of Bakhtin”.

L’articolo offre un contributo al dibattito sull’ibridazione, cercando di superare gli schematismi riguardanti tale concetto. Le premesse per un discorso teorico vengono individuate nell’estetica del conflitto di Friedrich Nietzsche, che scorge nell’opera d’arte il luogo di una lotta tra forze opposte e pone così le basi per una distinzione tra ibridazioni sterili e ibridazioni feconde. Le riflessioni del filosofo tedesco consentono l’elaborazione di una riflessione sull’ibridazione capace di rinunciare all’esaltazione unilaterale delle mescolanze come fenomeno della modernità e di superare le teorie che prediligono i generi in favore di quelle che prediligono i modi di essere e gli stili di pensiero, che meglio permettono di descrivere lo statuto ontologico di oggetti semantici come esseri umani e opere d’arte. L’analisi dei Figli della mezzanotte fornirà un’esemplificazione di tale prospettiva.

In 1780 the English translator and essayist Eliza Ball Hayley (b.1750-1797) published Essays on Friendship and Old-Age, by the Marchioness de Lambert. The text was a translation of two of the many philosophical treatises written by the French philosopher Anne-Thérèse de Lambert (1647-1733). Addressing the chronological, linguistic, and geographical distance between the authors and their philosophical thought, this article examines the motivations behind Hayley’s translation, regarding them as an act of resistance to the predominant contemporary male intellectual discourse, dismissive of de Lambert’s influence. Furthermore, it suggests that through the act of translating, Hayley is in fact recovering de Lambert and her (gendered) contribution to the history of ideas, while in parallel she is asserting her own place within this intellectual continuum by benefiting from de Lambert’s legacy, and thus contributing to, and sustaining, a female genealogy of thought.

L’articolo si concentra, da una prospettiva che si avvale dello strumentario terminologico e teorico dell’ecologia dei media, su alcuni testi di finzione – Generation A di Douglas Coupland e The Raw Shark Texts di Steven Hall – in cui viene trattato il tema della possibile estinzione o sopravvivenza del letterario in una chiave di lettura che potremmo definire ecodistopica. In un periodo caratterizzato da cambiamenti climatici e disastri ambientali, anche questi testi esprimono preoccupazioni profonde riguardo all’ambiente narrativo – radicalmente modificato dal digitale – attingendo a piene mani al campo metaforico della sostenibilità, dello sfruttamento ed esaurimento delle risorse e dell’evoluzione e rigenerazione delle forme, con un focus particolare sull’elemento acquatico.

Questo articolo presenta il progetto Macchine per leggere, nato dalla collaborazione tra il Dipartimento di Studi letterari, filosofici e di storia dell’arte dell’Università di Roma “Tor Vergata” e il Centro per il Libro e la Lettura del MiC. Scopo del progetto è la realizzazione di un ambiente digitale (desktop e mobile) che introduca gli studenti della scuola secondaria di secondo grado alla conoscenza e all’utilizzo delle tecniche di analisi computazionale dei testi, qui proposte come spunto per accostarsi alla lettura dei classici della letteratura italiana (tra gli altri che saranno resi disponibili sul sito, Il piacere, I Malavoglia, Il fu Mattia Pascal…). L’approccio del distant reading e gli strumenti informatici per l’analisi e la rappresentazione dei corpora e per il text mining (word cloud, indici di frequenza di termini e sintagmi, topic modeling, sentiment e network analysis), uniti ad altre risorse come la geolocalizzazione su mappe digitali dei luoghi letterari, saranno presentati sia come metodo per simulare in ambiente virtuale reading strategies, che come modelli per integrare le prassi ermeneutiche tradizionali – close reading. In una sezione del sito dedicata, gli algoritmi di cui si darà dimostrazione saranno a disposizione degli studenti in forma di web app, così che possano sperimentare in autonomia e su altri testi in loro possesso l’approccio distant proposto nell’ambito del progetto.

L’approccio del distant reading e gli strumenti informatici per l’analisi e la rappresentazione dei corpora e per il text mining (word cloud, indici di frequenza di termini e sintagmi, topic modeling, sentiment e network analysis), uniti ad altre risorse come la geolocalizzazione su mappe digitali dei luoghi letterari, saranno presentati sia come metodo per simulare in ambiente virtuale reading strategies, che come modelli per integrare le prassi ermeneutiche tradizionali – close reading. This essay aims to explore the interrelation of the widespread use of digital epitextual material and the common practice, in post-postmodern U.S. fiction, to employ characters and character-narrators that share some biographical details with their authors. Specifically, this essay attends to narrative communication when an autobiographical connection between authors and characters is established not textually, but paratextually, through digital epitexts to be found, for instance, on authors’ social media profiles. Through the analysis of Raven Leilani’s Luster (2020), I will show how digital epitexts acquire a central role for contemporary narrative dynamics: it is through them that many novels realize the author-character connection providing fiction with a layer of alleged authenticity meant to reinforce the post-postmodern tendency to earnestly engage with ethical and political issues.
