Objective: To address the systemic contribution of Protegemos las escuelas program to the increase of public spaces, road safety and environmental quality; the enhancement of public facilities and their immediate surroundings; and the reduction of socio-environmental imbalances between neighborhoods. Methodology: Case study based on the analysis of the 25 school environments transformed in the first phase of the action, aiming to elaborate a taxonomy of the interventions. Relevance: The work discusses the paradigm shift that characterizes Barcelona in the last decade, based on the transition from the culture of “official grandiloquence” to the attention on acting in the small and the ordinary, a phenomenon inserted in the context of economic and health crisis, but also political and representative. Results: Verification of the existence of five types of squares, in isolated or combined occurrences, with better or worse performances. After eleven months of operation, the program has already been able to generate approximately 3,500 m 2 of new public spaces for pedestrians in the school surroundings. Contributions: The work contributes to the enhancement of small-scale everyday public spaces, presenting a tactical urbanism experience focused on the creation of public spaces of permanence associated with the school network. Conclusion: Although the program is still in the testing phase, and the scope as well as the limitations for the field of urban design are yet to be fully revealed, it is possible to highlight different contributions that emphasize the various aspects present in tactical urbanism methodology.

Objective of the study: To present a proposal for the application of construction and works demolition waste (CDW) in the manufacturing of asphalt coating as an alternative for the use of these materials. Methodology/approach: Physical, chemical and mineralogical characterization tests and dosage assessments by the Marshall method were applied. An experimental pavement stretch was then analyzed using a market feature adapted for CDW inclusion. Recycled aggregate (RA) containing gravel 1 and sand was then used to replace the same natural type of aggregate in an asphaltic coating layer. Originality/Relevance: On a worldwide scale, the building materials industry is expected to increase two and a half-fold between 2010 and 2050 (UNEP, 2002). In Brazil, estimates indicate that the construction sector will double in size by 2022 (Cebeds, 2009), leading to increased waste generation. It is, thus, crucial to take measures aimed at solid waste management through cultural and technological changes, aiming to meet the needs of a society increasingly elucidated and demanding in regard to environmental preservation. One of the engineering sectors that can promote the use of RA, which requires less investments, is that of urban and road pavements (Rezende et al., 2016). Main results: The proposed experimental program indicates that CDW aggregates exhibit adequate potential for use in hot asphalt coatings, based on volumetric parameters, Marshall dosage tests and experimental stretch assessments, in which traffic analyses and bearing conditions indicated quite satisfactory asphalt pavement results. Theoretical/methodological contributions: During the analyzed period, only slight functional differences were observed between RA and non-RA containing asphalt coatings. Thus, the well-dosed use of a material that may result in environmental pollution on a low traffic-load pavement becomes viable from a sustainability point of view, due to reduced consumption of natural aggregates in the face of the benefits of recycled material. Conclusions: The gravel 1 RA was adequate for asphalt pavement use, exhibiting some interesting properties, i.e. Los Angeles abrasion (35%) and shape index (0.87), in accordance to current Brazilian ABNT standards. Regarding the experimental stretch, although a small detachment of ceramic surface portions was observed, this subtle occurrence did not compromise the asphalt coating and, after 5 months of functional analyses, the asphalt pavement continues to perform very satisfactorily regarding vehicle bearing.

Objective : Indicate possible adaptations for sustainable buildings in the city of Uberaba/MG, assisting in the choice of alternatives for a better environmental quality of the urban environment. The percolation, delay and infiltration of rainwater and green roofs were listed. Methodology/Approach: Both metropolises and cities in the interior of Brazil are facing several environmental problems, demonstrating the need to rethink the urban configuration, posing as a challenge to the public and private authorities the need to guarantee a sustainable city in environmental, social and economical aspects. Due to this imbalance in the sustainability tripod, public and private institutions sought to create plans and actions aimed at the macro and micro environment in which society is inserted, such as, the Sustainable Agendas. In addition, they rely on the help of sustainable systems and devices to reduce the consumption of natural resources and environmental impacts. Originality/Relevance: Through literature reviews, we searched for indicators as a suggestion for sustainability that may fit Uberaba’s necessities, resulting in some local analyzes in contrast with studies on sustainability. Results: It was observed the presence of actions that help in sustainability and show themselves as sustainable alternatives both for the government and the community itself, for example on roads and sidewalks: the increase in permeable areas and infiltration to reduce the percolation in periods of rain. Theoretical/Methodological Contributions: The results of this study identify how through small local changes in homes and the urban collective area can help to minimize the damage caused by urban disasters, which arise through human intervention without proper study of the environment, suggesting contributions to these new actions for an increase in the city's environmental quality. Conclusion: The use of interlocked concrete block pavement was chosen as a sustainability suggestion. Although in the economic analysis it is not entirely viable because of the higher cost of the concrete pavement for the ride, taking into account the performance criterion for the rainwater percolation, its choice is the most assertive. On the issue of sustainability, it takes several selection criteria for each specific action.

Objective of the study: to present the analysis of the collected data referring to the characteristics of affluent sewage of the Serraria Sewage Treatment Station, in Porto Alegre/RS. Methodology / approach: descriptive research with a quantitative approach and centralized in the case study of the biogas exploration generated for the production of electric energy. Originality / relevance: this study focuses on the technical and economic feasibility for generating electricity from biogas effluent for use at the station itself, serving most of the local loads, as well as the energy conversion technology used from of the internal combustion Cycle Otto, with its accessories. Main results: installation, operation and maintenance costs for five years are estimated at around R$ 4.500.000,00. In addition, the return on invested capital occurs, at most, in 4 years and 7 months. Theoretical / methodological contributions: there is a tendency to increase electricity from the network tariff and the flow of inputs in the UASBs, making self-generation even more viable. Currently, biogas is flared and the sludge generated is deposited in landfills, which makes it possible to produce electricity and supply it to the distribution network. Conclusion: sewage treatment plants consisting of an upstream flow anaerobic sludge deposit followed by active sludge aims to treat effluents, that is, to promote the separation of gases, solids and liquids as a form of sustainable treatment and, in addition, to provide sustainable benefits and resources for society.

Study’s goal: The general goal of this paper is to create a conceptual framework that allows for the assessment of sustainability practices in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Methodology/approach: In order to meet the goal set, a systematic survey of the scientific literature about sustainability assessment models in HEIs was conducted, which allowed for the identification of characteristics and functionalities of the existent models. The systematic literature review developed adopts the Knowledge Development Process-Constructivist (ProKnow-C) method complemented by a procedure known as snowball sampling to create a portfolio of articles to be reviewed. Originality/Relevance: This paper reviews a considerable number of sustainability assessment models for higher education, identifying correlated axes in existent models and contributing to further research about the theme of sustainability assessment in higher education. Main results: The results generated a summary chart composed of 10 thematic axes that describe sustainable operations in HEIs. They are as follows: governance and policy, laws, ethics and integrity, teaching, purchases, transportation, energy, water, food, innovation, and hazardous waste. Theoretical/methodological contributions : This paper is based on the literature review, particularly adopting systematic review techniques. Conclusion: The systematic survey of scientific literature generated a summary chart composed of 10 thematic axes. This paper is limited to ascertaining the thematic areas that may develop criteria to assess service operations in HEIs. The thematic axes found by this paper may be employed by future studies to obtain specific criteria and their applicability in HEIs.
