The consequences of consuming excessive amounts of alcoholic beverages are currently an important problem for many societies, not only in the context of treatment of alcohol dependence, but also the health effects of alcohol abuse. Long-term consumption of alcoholic beverages is associated with increased risk of hypertension, ischemic heart disease, also mouth and throat, stomach, liver or large intestine cancer. Due to almost 90% of consumed alcohol being broken down in the liver by oxidative pathways, this organ is particularly vulnerable to the effects of alcohol metabolism. The consequences of alcohol metabolism in the liver is the formation of byproducts, namely acetaldehyde and interaction between acetaldehyde and proteins, lipoproteins, DNA, also formation of reactive oxygen species and markers of inflammation, which can intensify immunological and inflammatory reactions and oxidative stress, thus contributing to the damage of hepatocytes, Streszczenie

Introduction: The aim of the study was to inves-tigate the biographies of women diagnosed with symptoms of co-dependency and to understand the relationship between their significant life events and the process of creating beliefs about themselves, interpreting and giving their own lives a meaning, and how they shape relationships with others. Material and methods: The ment of a construct of personal traits and charac-teristics, recognised in the adulthood as symptoms of co-dependency. The obtained results endorse further research on the relationship between co-dependency and the traits which develop in the early stages of life, after difficult experiences with the involvement of parents. Conclusions: The studies confirmed the adaptive concept, with sources in difficult experiences in the childhood, which make the foundation for the development of symptoms of co-dependency manifested in adulthood in the relationship with a drinking person. Experiences from the past can have a significant negative impact on the current situation of women in a relationship with an alco-holic, which proves how important it is to take this aspect into consideration in therapy.

Introduction: The research topic was psychoactive substance use as a factor that diversifies the respondents’ sexual scripts and as an element of their sexual activity. Material and methods: The data were obtained from research projects carried out among 18-year-aged Voluntary Labour Corps members (N = 563) and prisoners (N = 485). The method used was a diagnostic survey. Results: Adolescent drug use, frequent alcohol consumption, alcohol abuse or early symptoms of alcohol dependence co-occur with more frequent sexual contacts and particularly with risky behaviours such as early sexual initiation (under the age of 15), giving up contraception, prostitution and a large number of sex partners. The majority of men have had multiple sexual experiences while being intoxicated with alcohol or drugs. Streszczenie

Alcohol dependence (AD) is a chronic and recurrent disease that is a major social and clinical problem. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a few drugs for AD treatment like disulfiram, naltrexone and acamprosate. Their efficacy is limited and depends on many additional factors. Also therefore, new methods of therapy are still being sought. Currently, research is focused on a new generation of antiepileptic drugs that could improve the efficiency of AD treatment thanks to their multidirectional mechanism of action associated with neurotransmission systems involved in the pathogenesis of addiction. Topiramate is the most widely studied drug in this area. The results of preclinical studies showed that the drug reduces the intake of ethanol and alleviates symptoms of withdrawal syndrome in animals. The results of clinical observations in patients with AD confirmed the efStreszczenie

Introduction: The aim of this article is to analyse the process of creation and implementation of policy on new psychoactive substances (NPS) in Poland in the context of definitional and legal issues, social and market response, implementation of prevention programmes and scientific knowledge. New psychoactive substances and policy response in Poland: New psychoactive substances are a subject to both criminal and administrative law in Poland. Two definitions that refer to NPS and two lists on which they can be placed are currently in force: the annex to the Act on Counteracting Drug Addiction and the annex to the regulation of the Minister of Health. Changes in legislation and the expansion of the list of scheduled substances in 2009-2015 were accompanied by an increase in health risks while the initial success of the policy was diminished with the revival of the NPS market.
