The importance of acetaldehydein the metabolism and mechanismof ethyl alcohol action

Acetaldehyde is the first metabolite of ethanol and may be formed by alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1) and catalase. ADH is an essential pathway that oxidises alcohol in peripheral tissues (primarily in the liver). Acetaldehyde is oxidised to acetic acid by the aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) enzyme. Acetaldehyde passes into the brain from the peripheral blood with difficulty, due to the blood-brain metabolic barrier, which is ALDH in the brain blood vessels. Acetaldehyde can be formed directly in the brain, mainly by catalase enzyme. Another important enzyme metabolising ethanol in central nervous system is CYP2E1.

Introduction: The aim of the study was to distinguish the maladaptive schemas defined by Jeffrey Young et al. dominate within a group of Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACoA) and to examine the relationship between the schemas and depressive symptoms in the study group. Material and methods: Young Schema Questionnaire (YSQ-SF3), Rutz Gotland Male Depression Scale (GMDS) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were used in this study. The study consisted of 56 female and 10 male participants in ACoA treatment. Results: The highest results in the study group were obtained in the following schemas: Recognition-seeking, Negativity, Unrelenting standards, Streszczenie

Methadone or buprenorphine? The choice of substitution therapy in pregnant opioid dependent women
IF 0.3 Q4 SUBSTANCE ABUSE Pub Date : 2018-01-01 DOI: 10.5114/AIN.2018.81301
J. Zalewska-kaszubska
Pregnant opioid dependent women have an increased risk of complications both during pregnancy and delivery. Substitution therapy can considerably reduce this risk. Unfortunately, this treatment is not without its side effects, often associated with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS), which requires treatment. Methadone and buprenorphine used as substitution therapy, mitigate extreme fluctuations in the concentration of opioids in the blood, which may occur during uncontrolled opioids abuse. The use of buprenorphine is associated with a lower risk of premature delivery, milder withdrawal symptoms and better neonatal health. However, women receiving buprenorphine discontinued therapy more often. Therefore, methadone is preferred in substitution therapy, especially in women who require higher doses of opioids in order to achieve homeostasis. Streszczenie
Streszczenie
