The Poverty Game and the Violent Crime Database both provide different types of learner sequence control. The implications of this and the usefulness of each for general exploration and education, as opposed to directed searches, is addressed.

Summary Training Child Protective Services (CPS) workers for competency-based practice has received increasing attention in recent years. This article examines and critiques current approaches in CPS training. A new approach using computer-based training (CBT) programs to enhance competency of CPS workers is presented. Implementation issues of CBT, including costs, adequacy of computer technology, resistance to the technology and ethical considerations, are also discussed. A multi-modal approach to integrate CBT with self-instruction manuals, classroom training, video-based materials, and supervisor-assisted instruction is recommended.

Summary The purpose of this paper is to present a proposal for development and initial assessment of a computerized version of the Talking, Feeling, and Doing Game (Creative Therapeutics, 1973). The Talking, Feelings and Doing Game was developed by Richard A. Gardner M.D., in order to facilitate the therapeutic process for those children who are “inhibited, constrained, or resistive” (Gardner, 1986, p. 609) or as an alternative therapeutic tool for children who are not characterized as resistant and thus freely reveal information. This game provides children an opportunity to talk about themselves in a way that is less anxiety provoking than traditional methods of eliciting information about their underlying psychodynamics.

Summary This study deals with the development and application of a computerized therapeutic simulation game for the purpose of raising the moral level of youth in distress. The effects of the game on moral development were determined by a moral development measure (MOTEC) set out by Ziv, (1976). The level of moral development of a research group (n = 13) and a control group (n = 14) were measured before and after exposure to the therapeutic game, A total of five indices of moral development were used. Two of these, Moral stage and Punishment reveal a positive effect on the participants. The study concludes with a discussion of the effects of therapeutic games on moral development and their potential use in the field.

This study provides a profile of social workers who utilize OE-Mne services. On-line social worker demographics are compared to those of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) membership. Satisfaction with on-line training and resources was assessed and suggestions were solicited. Subjects were asked to describe their vision of future on-line application. Participants were 162 social workers solicited from 32 on-line discussion groups. Notable differences were found in the demographics comparison and in the on-line usage of social workers in university and non-university settings and in gender. ABSTRACT The role of computers in knowledge developments is explored from two perspectives: the computer as a tool to enhance knowledge development and the computer as a major influence or paradigm affecting the nature and structure of knowledge development. As a tools the computer is without precedence, continually transforming to meet current and future knowledge needs. Examples of this are provided. As a paradigm, the computer will support the positivistic development of knowledge, emphasizing structure, taxonomies and operational definitions. Computers, however, also offer the potential to develop knowledge through other, more exploratory, creative and intuitive ways. In summary, computers will respond to meet the challenge of pluralism in knowledge development and our many ways of knowing.

SUMMARY In 1993, St. Louis was awarded a cooperative agreement to develop a centralized intake system which would serve as a single entry point to all of the publicly funded adult substance abuse treatment centers in St. Louis City and County. This article follows the development of the information system established to meet these goals from conceptualization to implementation. The obstacles encountered during the development are discussed, along with the current design of the system that has been instituted statewide.
