Promoting Exhibit Access and Safety (PEAS): Listening and Learning Sessions 促进展览开放与安全 (PEAS):聆听与学习会议

In 2021, the Promoting Exhibit Access and Safety (PEAS) Working Group surveyed attendees at four cultural heritage conferences to get a broader perspective on institutional processes and procedures at the intersection of access and safety. Nearly three-quarters of survey respondents said their institution had experienced challenges with detrimental visitor interactions (DVI). Respondents also shared an assortment of strategies used to prevent such interactions, such as signage, display cases, physical barriers, and gallery attendants. In 2023, PEAS conducted a series of discussion sessions with museum professionals from across North America to better understand these strategies and their effectiveness. The sessions followed a structured list of questions that were designed to build upon the results of the survey and elicit open and transparent conversations. The following article is a summary and analysis of those discussions.

Women, Empire, and Entomology: An Object Biography of Eleanor Glanville’s Pipevine Swallowtail, c. 1700 女性、帝国与昆虫学:埃莉诺-格兰维尔的琵琶燕尾的实物传记,约 1700 年

Today, the gentlewoman Eleanor Glanville (1655–1709) is often remembered as the first lady of British butterflies. In Glanville’s own lifetime, she gained a reputation amongst London naturalists as an astute collector of butterflies from the South West region of England. Yet, a turn towards Glanville’s material archive, namely, her extant specimens held at the Natural History Museum, London, reveals Glanville’s success as a collector of rare butterflies from the Americas and thus, her complicity in colonial collecting. This article provides an object biography of a single pipevine swallowtail or Battus philenor, c. 1700, labeled “Glandvill.” It follows the butterfly specimen from its obscure origins in the Americas, to Glanville’s residence in the Atlantic port city of Bristol, and to London naturalists’ cabinets of curiosities, where it would became part of a collection that helped found the British Museum, the first public museum of its kind. The life cycle of this object attests to the role that empire played in building one woman’s collection of insects and her contributions to the making of present-day museums. It also suggests that while empire opened up opportunities for some women naturalists, it did not necessarily advance their reputations as collectors.

Ver en Español: A Pilot Project to Investigate Translation Methods for Archival Exhibits and Finding Aids 西班牙语调查档案展览和检索工具翻译方法的试点项目

The internationalization brought about by online finding aids and the United States’ expanding diverse population necessitates a renewed focus on representation and accessibility in archival research. The accessibility of archival resources depends on the language in which the content is offered to the public. Throughout the United States, the Spanish-speaking population continues to grow. Employees in the University of North Texas Special Collections department obtained grant funding to translate finding aids and digital exhibits into Spanish, with an emphasis on finding a translation solution that offered a balance between cost and quality (i.e., readability and accuracy). This article discusses possible options for translation, including translation vendors, Office 365, and DeepL; findings of the project, with specifics about the cost-effectiveness and quality of each option; and general advice to other institutions interested in undertaking translation projects, regardless of available resources.

From Bolton to Brussels and Beyond: Two Women’s Passion for Museums and Collecting 从博尔顿到布鲁塞尔及其他地方:两位女性对博物馆和收藏的热情

The youngest daughter of one of the northwest of England’s largest cotton magnates, Annie Barlow, was a well-educated and passionate woman. At the time of studying English Literature and History in London in 1880 to 1882 she became involved with the newly formed Egypt Exploration Fund, and at just nineteen years old became one of the first, and youngest, Honorary Local Secretaries for Bolton and the surrounding area—a roll she held for almost sixty years up to her death in 1941. The social circles opened to her by her father and brothers included world business leaders, academics and royalty. Through lectures, exhibitions and many cups of tea, Annie proclaimed the work of the fund across the United Kingdom, while modestly keeping her own efforts unannounced. Her fundraising surpassed that of many other local secretaries and led to the amassing of the largest collection of Egyptology in a local authority museum in the UK at Bolton Museum. Her travels took her far and wide, and she too built a sizeable collection of antiquities. Her passion for history, driven by a desire for educational development and religious devotion, was transmitted to those whom she met. It was through her influence and intimate knowledge of textile production that Bolton and its first curators became a renowned center for textile analysis, with excavators sending material to Bolton to aid their interpretations. During the First World War, Annie and her family homed European refugees. Her support for one girl in particular, Raymonde Frin, became a life-long friendship. Growing up under the wing of Annie, and surrounded by private collections of ancient material, Raymonde developed a passion for archaeology. Annie’s financial legacy directly supported the development of Raymonde’s life. Eventually achieving formal archaeological qualifications, she went on to be an integral part of the newly formed UNESCO museums and monuments division, becoming its first editor for Museums International Magazine, and involved in projects to save Egyptian heritage. This paper will look at the two women, Annie and Raymonde, within the context of women collecting and museum work, and their legacy for collections, in particular Egyptology, to the current day.

Toward Centering Indigenous Knowledge in Museum Collections Management Systems 在博物馆藏品管理系统中以土著知识为中心

Museums still struggle with colonial data legacies within collections management systems, building mechanisms to be “inclusive” but challenged by how to model more expansive post-colonial ways of thinking. Although it anticipated a need to be “inclusive” of Native knowledge in the original design of its CMS, the National Museum of the American Indian is still challenged by the processes for how knowledge is entered into the system and by which information is seemingly “centered” within the system. Following on the release of the Smithsonian’s new Shared Stewardship and Ethical Returns policy, the NMAI is rethinking documentation structures within its CMS based on its dialogue with Native communities, conversations with other Smithsonian museums, and discussions with CMS colleagues. The museum is questioning why certain knowledge seems prioritized over others. Is this a fault of the system classification methods or our own practices? Can we re-envision CMS relationships to center Native knowledge?

Established in 2020, the Promoting Exhibit Access and Safety (PEAS) Working Group was formed by cultural heritage, safety, and health professionals with a shared interest in finding multidisciplinary solutions to “detrimental visitor interactions (DVI),” defined as “any incident where an individual engages with an exhibit and harms themselves, others, or a collection item.” The Working Group is composed of individuals from various private and non-profit organizations that connect to international, national, regional, local, and tribal audiences. In 2021, the Working Group surveyed attendees at four cultural heritage conferences to get a broader perspective on what institutions are already doing at the intersection of access and safety. The following article is a presentation and analysis of the survey results which comprises both quantitative and qualitative data.

{"title":"Promoting Exhibit Access and Safety (PEAS): Reflections on Conference Surveys","authors":"Jeffrey Hirsch, Pei Koay, Cali Martin, Melissa Miller, Robert Waller, Amy Zavecz","doi":"10.1177/15501906241233809","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1177/15501906241233809","url":null,"abstract":"Established in 2020, the Promoting Exhibit Access and Safety (PEAS) Working Group was formed by cultural heritage, safety, and health professionals with a shared interest in finding multidisciplinary solutions to “detrimental visitor interactions (DVI),” defined as “any incident where an individual engages with an exhibit and harms themselves, others, or a collection item.” The Working Group is composed of individuals from various private and non-profit organizations that connect to international, national, regional, local, and tribal audiences. In 2021, the Working Group surveyed attendees at four cultural heritage conferences to get a broader perspective on what institutions are already doing at the intersection of access and safety. The Molina Family Latino Gallery: A PEAS Case Study 莫利纳家族拉丁画廊:PEAS 案例研究

On June 18, 2022, the National Museum of the American Latino (NMAL) debuted the Molina Family Latino Gallery (MFLG), the Museum’s first exhibition space. Inside the National Museum of American History (NMAH), the Gallery opened ¡Presente! A Latino History of the United States, an exhibition affirming NMAL’s credo that Latino history is U.S. history. In the 4,500 ft2 Gallery, objects on loan from six Smithsonian (SI) units and over 50 external lenders are on display in large wall cases and highlight “nooks.” Despite all objects being behind large glass doors, visitors can engage with multi-sensory interactives, digital interfaces, and the 500 ft2 General Motors Learning Lounge. One nook highlights a ceramic Tree of Life by Veronica Castillo on a rotating base. The QR codes throughout the Gallery allow visitors to explore the Museum’s online presence, including a 3D-scan of Castillo’s piece. Even with efforts for broader accessibility, the Gallery still faces unexpected challenges when considering exhibit access and safety. This article explores MFLG from many angles and the balance between collection care and interactivity. From environmental monitors to enthusiastic visitors, ¡Presente! demonstrates the challenges that museums face and serves as a platform to prepare for the new National Museum of the American Latino.

The Field Collector, Ethnographer, and Scholarly Networker: Annie Marion Rivett-Carnac and her Collection of Indian Jewellery 田野收藏家、人种学者和学者网络:安妮-马里恩-里维特-卡纳克和她的印度珠宝收藏

This article explores the significance of gender in understanding the formation of Indian collections in European museums, and how the activities of a single collector sheds light on the role of the individual and wider society. It focuses on Annie Marion Rivett-Carnac’s (1843–1935) contribution to multiple European museums over a period of over forty years. She amassed a personal collection of 6,000 to 8,000 items, brought together during her life in India alongside her husband. Her assemblage consisted of Indian body ornaments, jewellery, and items used in religious and daily practices, which she used to form networks with eminent figures in anthropology and ethnography in Europe, some outside of Britain’s traditional networks of British imperial collectors. While her husband has a prominent presence through his donations to museums, membership of learned societies and publications, little is known about her. Her contributions to museum collections in Britain, Germany and Sweden have largely gone unstudied, which this article seeks to address. It argues that Rivett-Carnac used her collections and the emergence of ethnography in Europe and British India as a way to position herself as a serious and respected scholar.

Defensible Collections: Designing a Safe Exhibit Space 可防御的藏品:设计安全的展览空间

A startling number of conservators tell stories about mistreatment of collection material by the public. We used to hear a familiar type of problem: vitrines marred by strollers, glass broken by resting parents, or a pencil falling out of a pocket onto a background. Now, the story is more dramatic: French fries deposited on remote surfaces of large dinosaur specimens. Is an exhibit successful if attendance contributes to the damage of delicate material? This paper provides a broad overview of the risk to exhibited collection material imposed by visitors. Patterns of damage to collections correspond to specific characteristics of the exhibit spaces themselves. This investigation looks at problems encountered at one large paleontology exhibit and overlays successful concepts drawn from sources outside the museum world.
