ABSTRACT This research project describes a phenomenological study exploring the hope experiences of young adults who have gone through the journey from academic failure to success. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with eight participants from low-functioning families. By using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, the researchers identified four primary themes representing the hope experience and meaning in the participants’ life situation: (a) adverse conditions, (b) motivation of interest, (c) positive thoughts and (d) relationship support. The findings support and contribute new aspects to the knowledge of hope study. The results highlight ‘positive thoughts and relationship support’ as the integral part of the phenomenon of hope. It suggests that college counsellors should assess the availability of perceived positive thoughts and relationship support in order to design tailor-made programmes for the young adults. College counsellor and academic staff may collaborate on curriculum design through which teacher can use classroom activities to promote students’ hopeful thinking. College counsellor can play an important role in developing hope within the classroom.

ABSTRACT This study investigated children’s age when adopted, time spent with adoptive families, institutionalization experience and parenting styles in predicting attachment security in children adopted from China by US families. Participants were 92 US parents with children adopted from China with a mean age of 19-month old at the time of adoption. Children in this study have spent an average of 5 years with their adoptive parents. Authoritative parenting was found to be a positive predictor, whilst permissive parenting was a negative predictor of attachment security. Results provided practical implications for professional counsellors who work with adoptive families and Chinese adoptees. Results also shed light on future research directions.

ABSTRACT This study investigated attachment styles as contributors to dispositional envy and to the negative emotions being elicited when an individual confronts a deficiency-context situation. A total of 124 undergraduates completed self-report assessments of their attachment orientation, self-esteem, tendency towards social comparison and dispositional envy. Participants also underwent a procedure of contextual deficiency priming in which negative feelings towards the self and the other were measured. Results pointed to the contribution of attachment dimensions over and above the contribution of social comparison and self-esteem in explaining the variance of dispositional envy, negative feelings towards the self and the other. The study’s results suggest how to approach insecurely attached clients who harbour envy.

ABSTRACT The ability to build a strong therapeutic alliance has direct impact on successful therapy outcome. However, there is limited knowledge about the therapeutic alliance in Chinese culture. This study aims to validate the factorial structure of a Chinese short form of the Working Alliance Inventory (WAI-S) for therapists and examine the correlation of alliance scores between therapist and client. The sample included 39 local counsellors and 139 local clients, who completed the Hong Kong versions of the WAI-S after the first and third counselling sessions. The principal component factor analyses indicated that similar to our previous findings for clients, the original three-factor model was not a fit one in the Hong Kong context and the one-factor, 10-item model was the best solution. The client and therapist ratings had low but significant positive correlations. Considering also that the WAI-S could be bifurcated to form two reliable subscales (goal–task and bond), it appears that the WAI-S may be instrumental in directing local counsellors’ attention to cultural dynamics relating to the mismatch between therapeutic goals derived from Western models and certain collectivist values of Chinese clients.

ABSTRACT This study investigated the counselling needs (academic, social, emotional, personal career and financial needs) of seminarians in Nigeria Catholic Major Seminaries. The study adopted a descriptive (survey research) design. Simple random sampling procedure was used to obtain a sample of 547 respondents from three major seminaries across the country. The modified Student Needs Assessment Survey was used to gather data for this study. The modified version is titled Catholic Seminarian Needs Assessment Questionnaire. The study revealed that seminarians expressed need for counselling on their academic, career and financial life. It was equally revealed that most of the seminarians (59.9%) seek the assistance of the spiritual directors and other priests in the seminaries in place of the counsellor(s). Based on the findings, it was recommended that seminars, workshops and symposia should be organized periodically for the seminarians in the seminaries to address how to maximally manage time, and avoid distraction when studying in order to obtain the maximum academic proficiency and enhance their social and personal issues. More importantly, the seminary administration should employ the services of trained counsellor(s) and establish counselling units in the major seminaries to address the seminarians’ counselling needs in Nigeria since there is none at the moment.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to provide quantitative data on parental experiences with their children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and to focus more on their opinion about medication and the role of psychological assessment and interventions. The study sample included 211 parents of children with ADHD. More than half of the parents think that ADHD could be treated without medication and that their child is too young to have psychotropic medication with its side effects. There were concerns about misdiagnosis and being too quick to prescribe medications. Psychometric assessment and psychological intervention were infrequently used and their experience with combined interventions is almost rare. Pressure from schools to prescribe medication was one of the parents’ concerns. Parental satisfaction with medication occurred when an improvement in school performance was noted. It is essential for health professionals to be aware of parents’ experiences and to develop a proper evidence-based intervention for ADHD which includes psychological counselling or combined interventions and not to rely on medication intervention alone.

ABSTRACT Using the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology as a framework, this study aims to examine whether performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions related to Internet use are associated with attitudes towards online counselling and online counselling utilization even after controlling for counselling-related variables. Results indicate that self-stigma and social support was negatively associated with attitudes towards online counselling. In addition, participants who perceive that important people in their lives encourage Internet use (social influence) have more favourable attitudes towards online counselling. Our results also suggest that positive attitudes towards online counselling and higher tendencies to self-conceal were associated with higher intent to utilize online counselling.

ABSTRACT Precision medicine approaches to depression argue for the assessment of individual client profiles of the two major diagnostic criteria of depressed mood and anhedonia. To explore this suggestion, 1,513 males and 1,348 females aged between 55 and 87 years from Newcastle, Australia, completed the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale (CESD). Total CESD score and the two sets of scores gradually increased with age; females had significantly higher scores on total CESD and the two subsets of scores. Anhedonia showed greater prevalence than depressed mood and also increased from age 70 years, whereas depressed mood remained fairly stable until age 80 years. Treatment efficacy for depression may benefit from consideration of individual client profiles on these two aspects of depression.
