ABSTRACT The relationship between supervisory identity development and supervisory experience, counselling experience, and training in supervision was examined for a group of 29 Singaporean counsellors who attended a workshop on supervision. Analyses indicated that supervisory experience was related to supervisory identity development, whilst counselling experience and supervisory training initially were not. Additionally, participants showed significantly greater scores on the Psychotherapy Supervisor Development Scale (PSDS) following the workshop when compared with PSDS scores prior to the workshop. Thus, workshop supervision training ultimately aided supervisory identity development. The implications of these findings are discussed in relation to the importance of supervisor credentials.

Originally introduced by Hermann Rorschach in his seminal work Psychodiagnostics, the Rorschach Inkblot Method (RIM) was widely recognized as a revolutionary psychological assessment. Nonetheless, Rorschach (1921) cautioned that its theoretical and conceptual foundations were still largely incomplete. Since then, most research on the test has addressed its administration, scoring criteria, and psychometric properties (Leichtman, 1996a). In the early seventies, Exner (1993) developed the Comprehensive System (CS) based on an extensive synthesis of the empirical data available at the time. The system was distinguished by its standardized procedure in administration, scoring, and coding, which is central to its reputation as an empirically grounded system. Weiner (1997) noted that the Rorschach CS had withstood decades of empirical investigation, particularly regarding issues related to inter-coder agreement, reliability, validity, and normative reference data (G. J. Meyer & Archer, 2001; Viglione & Hilsenroth, 2001). Recently, the RIM has faced strong criticisms on both empirical (Lilienfeld et al., 2000; Mihura et al., 2013) and theoretical grounds (Leichtman, 2013). Nevertheless, Meyer et al. (2011) proposed the Rorschach Performance Assessment System (R-PAS) to replace the Rorschach CS. The R-PAS addressed several conceptual and methodological issues associated with the Rorschach CS, including concerns about its validity, norm accuracy, variable number of responses, examiner differences, and the use of raw scores for interpretation. In light of these improvements, Meyer (2017) contended that the RIM remains a valid and unique assessment of personality and psychological processes. On the other hand, Kleiger (1993) highlighted David Rapaport’s contributions to the historical development of the Rorschach test, such as his emphasis on the integration of theory and test data as well as the significance of the patient–examiner relationship. Taken together, Rapaport’s original system and its modified versions were considered as an early endeavour to transcend the mechanical application of the test and promote a more individualized, theory-driven (i.e., ego psychology) interpretation of the data. Nonetheless, the core premise of the Rorschach test is based on hypothetical connections between perception and personality. Phenomenology takes issue with the

ABSTRACT This study attempted to examine the extent to which clients’ traits and expectations can predict working alliance within the Hong Kong Chinese context. A total of 144 undergraduate students who received counselling service provided by the counselling centre of the same university participated in this study. Before their first counselling session, they completed the Expectations about Counselling Questionnaire-Brief Form, the Affective Neuroscience Personality Scale, and scales adapted from the International Personality Item Pool. They were also invited to complete the Working Alliance Inventory-Short Form-Client after their third counselling session in the third week. The results demonstrated that clients’ expectation of their own involvement was the strongest predictor of working alliance in comparison with the other tested client traits.

ABSTRACT Authenticity is an indicator of psychological well-being. Until recently, studies on this construct has been scarce. This study aimed to fill this gap by culturally adapting a Sinhala version of the Authenticity Scale and using it to examine authenticity and selected demographic correlates among Sri Lankan undergraduates. The Sinhala version of the Authenticity Scale showed favourable psychometric properties. The survey results on 1235 Sri Lankan undergraduates indicate that this group is comparable to their counterparts in some dimensions of authenticity. The results also indicate that women report higher authenticity than men. Implications of this study are discussed, whilst emphasising the need to take into account variations that may occur in relation to authenticity in demographic factors such as gender.

ABSTRACT This study investigated the extent to which male and female, victims and perpetrators of domestic violence in a Ugandan urban sample engage different coping strategies. One hundred and twenty males (n = 60) and females (n = 60) participants from Kampala, Uganda, were recruited for the study from two agencies.: A two by two MANCOVA was conducted to explore the impact of role and gender on sub-scales of coping strategies (lie was controlled). The independent variables were role and gender. The results show statistically significant differences between victims and perpetrators on problem-solving and social support coping strategies (dependent variables). No differences were reported in results for males and females and there was no gender interaction. For role F = .4.986, p= .003; Pillai Trace = .117; partial eta squared = .117. For gender F = .199, p= .897; Pillai Trace = .005; partial eta squared = .005 . When the results for dependent variables were considered separately, differences of statistical significance were problem-solving strategy (F = 462.664, p= .041, partial eta squared = .036) and social support coping strategy (F = 4.261, p= .000, partial eta squared = .112). Post-hoc tests only showed significant differences between victims and perpetrators. Thus, although results revealed statistical significant role differences between victims and perpetrators in engaging coping strategies, the results revealed no gender differences in engaging coping strategies. This implies that males and females equally engaged in social, problem-solving and avoidant coping strategies at more or less the same rate. Thus, this study’s findings reveal appropriate coping strategies which will aid counsellors offering counselling services to victims and rehabilitation services to perpetrators to be gender-inclusive counsellors.

ABSTRACT The present study examines whether hope significantly mediates the relationship between spirituality and subjective happiness in Hong Kong Chinese Christians under a normal versus stressful social context. In Study 1(n = 1057), a mediational pathway from spirituality to subjective happiness via hope was documented. The significant mediation effect of hope was replicated in Study 2 (n = 650) in a similar sample during a territory-wide civil unrest. In both studies, hope was found to significantly mediate the relationship between the spirituality and subjective happiness. The unique contribution of hope to subjective happiness replicated across the two studies, indicating that the additional stressors and challenges associated with civil unrest did not affect the significance of the mediating effect. These results have implications for counselling practices.

ABSTRACT We applied two sessions of memory rescripting in routine cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) practice for MDD and measured its effectiveness. We also examined the content of intrusive memories and rescripted memories. Sixteen patients with MDD were asked to identify intrusive memories and rate their vividness, distress, interference with daily life, and uncontrollability before and after memory rescripting. As a result, memory rescripting significantly reduced the intrusive memory index. With one exception, memory rescripting created an image containing compassionate imagery, mastery imagery, or both elements. These results suggest that two sessions of memory rescripting could be incorporated into traditional CBT to improve distress caused by intrusive memories experienced by patients with MDD.

ABSTRACT This study evaluated the effectiveness of a series of seven psychosocial programmes in promoting holistic well-being of students in late adolescence. The psychosocial programme was held on two days, with two 3-hour sessions (morning and afternoon) scheduled for each day. Based on the body-mind-spirit model, the psychosocial programme involved bodily exercises, meditation, relaxation, singing, drawing, letter writing, sharing of experience, etc. As compared with the comparison group (N = 64), participants (N = 98) showed enhancement of equanimity in terms of nonattachment, general vitality, mindful awareness, and spiritual self-care. They also exhibited reduction in emotional affliction, declined emotional vulnerability, reduced bodily irritability, and lowered spiritual disorientation.

ABSTRACT The present study aimed to assess the effectiveness of Expressive Arts Therapy (EAT) in enhancing subjective happiness and reducing feelings of loneliness among institutionalized elderly women. The sample comprised of 5 women aged between 60-71 years. They were assessed on the Subjective Happiness Scale and UCLALoneliness scale. Pre and post-test analysis of Expressive Arts Therapy was done. The results showed improvement in the scores of subjective happiness and loneliness scales. It is concluded that EAT may produce positive effects on subjective happiness and loneliness feelings of institutionalized elderly women, however, a larger sample may draw a better conclusion.
