This article sketches ideologies of dialectal multilingualism in Bavaria and their impact on the construction of regional identities. In Bavaria, an “ethnolinguisticist” ideology differentiates between “tribes”, each with a specific dialectal repertoire as the “real”, authentic version. A discourse analysis of popular media and selective ethnographic interviews exemplifies these stylisations. The article closes with a discussion of the discrepancies between actual multilingualism and “ethnolinguisticist” ideology.

In the following, a research project conducted by students will be presented. The project arose in the course of a linguistic seminar in which the topics “multilingualism and identity” were discussed at the University of Augsburg during the summer term 2018. First and foremost, the project examines the choice and usage of varieties by students at the Bavarian universities Augsburg, Regensburg and Passau. It focuses on which introspection the interviewed students have in connection with language choice and identity and which reasons they give.

The life and work of the early Zionist, later Diaspora nationalist and president of the First Yiddish Language Conference in Czernowitz, Nathan Birnbaum, is usually considered as contradictory and extreme. However, as I argue in this article, Birnbaum remained consistent in his understanding of people and nation that was shaped by Herder and German romanticism - what actually changed were the political and social conditions of Middle and Eastern European Jewry.

The present paper investigates the use of own and foreign language terms in a German speech island in Russia. The informants living in the Altai Krai have been asked to tell the frog story (Mayer 1969) in their local German dialect. After analyzing the data, one was able to constitute three different groups of speakers. Their repertoires reflected in the predominant use of either Russian, standard German or dialectal descriptions for entities in flora and fauna. In this contribution, I argue that the differences observed are of diastratic nature. Furthermore, I will close with some remarks on the authenticity of the varieties that are to some extent quite distinct.

The present article looks into language biographies of young German-Chilean speakers between 16 and 25 years of age, with a special interest in the role of those languages other than German and Spanish. By combining approaches of language island studies with those of “sociolinguistics of mobile resources” as established by Blommaert (2010), linguistic profiles of young speakers of a minority language are being acquired, going beyond the dichotomy of immigration language vs. surrounding language. This shows how young German-Chileans are in a globalized world just as much as other young speakers. On this level, different language contact situations can be made comparable.

This article investigates important factors concerning the urban identity of the inhabitants of Regensburg and their linguistic manifestation. In interviews with citizens of Regensburg five characteristic factors emerged, which lead to the core factor, the popular idea of Regensburg as a linguistic enclave of the Middle Bavarian dialect surrounded by North Bavarian. The article shows how this idea became part of the cultural memory in Regensburg.
