The article deals with the “new” self-image of the German-Brazilians as becomes apparent in interviews in three Bohemian-speaking places in Southern Brazil. The identity of the descendants of Bohemian immigrants as constructed in the semi-structured interviews is primarily based on the identity repertoire of the past. The common language serves their new identity by separating the past from the present and helping to differentiate the language area of Bohemian from that of other contact varieties and Portuguese. The new, “hybrid” identity is constructed within the discourse, in that the speakers use object-language, metalinguistic and discursive means to consolidate their identity.

The article presents selected results of a survey on attitudes towards languages which was carried out among students of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat Munchen studying German as a second language to be teachers at German schools. Among the aspects treated are the following: length of studying the language concerned and of being familiar with the subject of “multilingualism” respectively, opinions on different factors having an influence on the reputation of languages, reasons for choosing Turkish as a “partner language” in their course of studies, perception of the sound structure as well as the assumed and experienced level of difficulty of the language studied.

Based on the election advertising of Austrian parties since 2013, the article investigates the functional integration of dialect structures into the language of political advertising posters. Apart from defining relevant political groups, the scope and linguistic sphere of dialect use is analyzed as well as the relation between dialectal and standard language text components. Among the persuasive strategies for which the emotional and identification potential of dialects is used the appeal to loyalties, the addressing of collectives, the support of certain visualization strategies (personalization, “country-of-origin-principle”) and methods of negative campaigning can be identified.
