This study examines the Greek language as used by residents of the Western (dp) and Northern (vp) suburbs of Athens. Theodoropoulou offers an original theoretical perspective and draws on a wide range of data—from ethnographic interviews to popular literature, television, hip-hop, and Facebook—to docu-ment special features and discourses characteristic of speech styles identified with vp and dp. These features and discourses are discussed in relation to three orders of indexicality across genres.

Cleaning up the Dirty Squad: Using the Obscene Publications Act as a Weapon of Social Control

Formed as a result of the introduction of the Obscene Publications Act 1959, the Obscene Publications Squad–known colloquially as the “Dirty Squad”–controlled a web of corruption and managed the proliferation of pornography in the Central London district of Soho. Although its reputation for corruption was the primary reason for the vice unit’s notoriety, their role in applying social control also had a profound impact on London society during the 1960s and 1970s. During this period, the Dirty Squad mounted a campaign against the underground press and their influence on the counterculture. It is suggested that these investigations were designed to provide a cover for the vice squad’s inaction against pornographers; by focusing attention on more radical elements of the city’s counterculture, the Dirty Squad gave the impression that they were taking action whilst simultaneously allowing their corrupt partners in the …

The EU's Proxy War on Refugees
IF 0.8 Q2 POLITICAL SCIENCE Pub Date : 2019-01-01 DOI: 10.13169/STATECRIME.8.1.0080
H. Hintjens, A. Bilgiç
For decades, European Union (EU) member states have fought an illegal proxy war – a form of state crime – against refugees and migrants, far beyond EU external borders. Fatalities make this proxy war equivalent to international classifications of war. To justify this war, migrants have progressively been reclassified by the EU as “illegal” or criminal. This article situates the proxy war within wider deterrence-based EU migration policies. Examples like the 2008–2009 Italy–Libya deal and 2016 EU–Turkey deal show the high price paid by refugees, minorities and the damage to the EU’s own stability and reputation. Forcibly confining people at “holding points” along migratory routes, expelling people to unsafe countries and raising barriers to legal movement, the violence of the proxy war became more visible in 2015. We conclude that far from counteracting the dynamics of mass displacement, the proxy war may have contributed to the recent crisis of refugee reception in Europe.
