Abstract In contemporary German literature, diagnoses of the times can be observed that interpret social modernization processes as alienation and loss of meaning. The article examines whether the selected novels tie in with the culture-critical crisis consciousness of the turn of the century around 1900. This article develops the thesis that in Der Eisvogel by Uwe Tellkamp and Sieben Nächte by Simon Strauß, men appear as figures of crisis through which socio-pathological side effects of modern progress are articulated.

Abstract The following essay examines the centrality of Cervantes’ Don Quixote for the emergence of ideology as a concept as well as in traditional formations of ideology critique. Despite their vastly different readings of the Spanish novel, Marx, Lukács, Adorno, and Benjamin converge in their ambivalence towards the novel’s humor, the comic collision of illusion, and quotidian reality so painful for the delusional knight. If the novel’s comedy operates, on the one hand, with the power to dissolve phantasmagoric ideas, its epistemological potential would seem, on the other hand, to be particularly limited by reified relations of power and their critique. This potential of comedy stands to be reanimated against the backdrop of both contemporary cancel culture’s rebukes and current disputes around identity.

Büchner’s revolutionary drama Danton’s Tod (1835) is situated at an interface between the French sensualist school of the idéologues and a modern concept of ideology in Marx. Abstract This article treats the problem of ideology in Peter Weiss’s trilogy Die Ästhetik des Widerstands (1975–1981), examining the semantics of ›Übereinstimmung‹ as well as the theory of class consciousness in the novel. The semantics of ›Übereinstimmung‹ bridges the gap between two poetological stances of the author: the claim for documentation, on the one hand, and for radically subjective empathy or mimesis, on the other. The question of class consciousness as developed by Georg Lukács in Geschichte und Klassenbewusstsein (1921) marks the crucial theoretical context regarding the formal construction of the novel and its narrator. Thus, the poetics of ›Übereinstimmung‹ must be understood as the poetic solution to the problem of class consciousness that the novel confronts.

Abstract The paper reconstructs a crucial moment in the history of literary studies: the transference of formal sociology, as developed by Georg Simmel around 1900, into literary studies by his pupil, the young Georg Lukács. First, formal sociology will be explained in order to outline the ways in which Lukács adapts it. Then the formal method Lukács developed will be illustrated using the drama as an example. Finally, the paper will analyze Caroline Levine’s highly acclaimed study Forms (2015) in the context of the history of the formal method outlined, and briefly discuss the impasse in which this method currently finds itself.

Abstract According to widespread prejudice, it was only about 1900 that the influence of society on literature became an important scholarly issue. On the contrary, it will be demonstrated that, since the beginnings of its literary history, the literature of the Middle Ages has been discussed within its social context. At the same time, it will be shown in this article that between 1895 and 1930 some exceptional figures, in particular, Paul Kluckhohn and Edward Schröder, though representing the intellectual atmosphere of their time, nonetheless contributed to the development of a method of correlating medieval society and literature that until today remains of more than historical interest.
