Abstract This essay discusses the German television series Tannbach (Line of Separation) to ask new questions about the representation of village life in German cinema and television. Though set during the Cold War, the series – I argue – invites us to rethink the conventional image of the village against the backdrop of twenty-first century perspectives on borders and migration, the commodification of technologies of seeing, and the Anthropocene’s impact on so-called natural habitats.

Abstract Around 1900, a number of writers left big cities for small villages in the countryside in order to continue their literary work there. This essay illuminates the spatial and social conditions under which outstanding works of German literature of this time were created. The writers included are Wilhelm Bölsche, Bruno Wille, Laura Marholm, Rainer Maria Rilke, Carl and Gerhart Hauptmann, Richard Dehmel, Detlev von Liliencron, Hermann Hesse, Paul Heyse, and Franziska zu Reventlow. The places they chose over big cities like Berlin or Munich are Friedrichshagen, Schliersee, Worpswede, Schreiberhau, Agnetendorf, Blankenese, Alt-Rahlstedt, Gaienhofen, Gardone, and Ascona.

Abstract This essay tries to contextualize a very popular nineteenth-century literary genre – Dorfgeschichten, village tales – from the standpoint of a historian.1 It considers two of the most widely read exemplars of the genre – Berthold Auerbach’s Schwarzwälder Dorfgeschichten and Alban Stolz’s Kalender für Zeit und Ewigkeit, and places them in relation to a third: Johann Peter Hebel’s Rheinisches Schatzkästlein. The essay argues that it makes sense to approach this genre from the early nineteenth-century context – temporal, spatial, and religious – that formed it rather than from problems, such as industrialization, encountered in a later time. It also argues for due consideration of historical concreteness over strict considerations of genre.

Abstract The recent vogue of village stories comes rather unexpected in a time of ‘globalization’. Starting out from Marcus Twellmann’s seminal study on the history of this genre, the present article discusses some possible reasons for this development. The second part gives an outline of the relation between the village story and the tradition of georgic poetry.

Abstract Under the umbrella of the Free German Youth (FDJ), starting in the 1960 s, the GDR instituted a comprehensive development program to instruct and motivate young adults to write poetry. This paper outlines the history of this project as well as its political, pedagogical, and aesthetic contexts, and develops corresponding research questions.

Abstract Berthold Auerbach’s Schwarzwälder Dorfgeschichten can be read as an early example of observations on the notion of time-space compression. In these provincial tales, the new technology of the railroad often functions as both a literary theme and a narrative device that links the microcosm of the village with the macrocosm of the world at large, thereby enabling a specific perspective on the processes of globalization in the 19th century.

Abstract The article cursorily examines conceptualizations of Dorf in contemporary German literature. Peter Kurzeck’s Vorabend (2011), Saša Stanišić’s Vor dem Fest (2014), Juli Zeh’s Unterleuten (2016), Katrin Seddig’s Das Dorf (2017), and Albina Herbing’s Niemand ist bei den Kälbern (2017) are examined and compared with regard to their representation of rural and urban life, and how they interplay with idealized, and sometimes stereotypical, expectations and concepts of life in the city vs. life in the village.

Abstract Texts that bear witness to the extremes of the 20th century, from the Shoah to imprisonment in camps, to the experience of torture, or the Gulag, describe the individual experience and, at the same time, a process that points beyond one’s own fate and has something to do with the essence of law. The authors describe a concrete and fundamental sense of the legal status of an individual. Simultaneously, the legal principle is touched, violated, and destroyed, on which selfhood, and with it, an interpersonal sense of being human is based.
