OBJECTIVE: To assess the ergonomic practices and prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms among Pakistani ophthalmologists. METHODS: This cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted at College of Ophthalmology and Allied Vision Sciences/Eye Unit III (King Edward Medical University), Lahore, Pakistan from 01-03-2021 to 31-08-2021. A web-based close ended questionnaire (Google form) was developed consisting of questions related to posture in out-patient and operating room in addition to questions related to musculoskeletal symptoms, their effect on routine practice, management. Questionnaire was circulated via a social media application (WhatsApp) to ophthalmologists across Pakistan. Ophthalmologists at various levels of healthcare were included in study. One hundred and seven ophthalmologists consented to part of study and recorded their responses in questionnaire which were then evaluated. RESULTS: Twenty (18.7%) of the participants were diagnosed as having musculoskeletal disorders. Lower back pain was the main symptom in 39 (36.4%) survey responders while 38 (35.5%) of them reported decreased clinical productivity owing to symptoms. Twenty-five (23.36%) participants had to modify their OPD activity owing to development of musculoskeletal symptoms (p<0.01). Majority of those diagnosed with musculoskeletal symptoms adopted neutral spine postures (ergonomically safe) during work hours as compared to those who were not diagnosed with similar disease (p>0.05). Participants who spent ≥6 hours in operation theater at a stretch were more prone to develop musculoskeletal symptoms (p=0.013). CONCLUSION: Majority of participants experienced musculoskeletal symptoms related to work necessitating the need for change in work place practices focusing on maintaining a neutral spine posture

OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of attributes of role modelling demonstrated by clinical trainers in teaching hospitals. METHODS: A pre-validated role model apperception tool (RoMAT) was used in this cross-sectional study to collect responses from trainees serving in seven teaching hospitals of Pakistan from January to December 2019. The questionnaire contained items on personal, teaching, and clinical attributes of role models. Responders were asked to recognize and respond to attributes of their identified clinical trainers on four-point Likert scale (strongly disagree to strongly agree). Descriptive statistics was carried out using SPSS 21. RESULTS: Out of the 900 questionnaires distributed; 740 post graduate trainees responded (response rate 82%); 540 (73%) recognized one role model, 185 (25%) identified two role models and the rest 15 (2%) did not identify any clinical trainer as a role model. Common attributes of trainers included: excellent clinical reasoning skills (97%), honesty and integrity (90%), awareness of role model status (86%), professionally competent (80%), communication skills (78%), positive interaction (84%), positive attitude (82%), making learning exciting (81%), understanding learners' needs (73%), demonstrating enthusiasm (86%), easy to work with (85%), leadership qualities (72%). Less common attributes included empathy (38%), patience (36%) and rapport with students (33%). CONCLUSION: Trainers in teaching hospitals has to improve their less common characteristics which include empathy, patience and rapport with students.

G and irreversible blindness. It has been estimated that in 2040, 111.8 million of the world's population will be affected by 1 g laucoma. The term "stero id responder" refers to those who have increased intraocular pressure (IOP) after taking steroids. Although the preva lence of s tero idinduced glaucoma (SIG) is unclear, it is believed that among the general population, roughly 33% have moderate, while 46% have a high response of IOP 2 elevation in response to steroids. SIG in youngsters is becoming a major public 3 health concern. According to a study of pediatric glaucoma patients, SIG is responsible for 24 percent of all 4 pediatric glaucoma cases. It accounts for 5.86 percent of all glaucoma patients in our country, which is a significant 5 percentage. SIG causes irreversible blindness, which has far-reaching consequences for an individual's quality of life, family, and the healthcare system. Since Pakistan's healthcare system is not as advanced as that of other developed nations, preventing this disease is an alternate and effective strategy to reduce SIG-related blindness. Pediatric SIG prevention would not only save our health and human resources, but it will also enable patients to participate in the country's growth in their own right.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the frequency of substance abuse among pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) patients and to assess the association of socioeconomic factors associated with substance abuse among PTB attending tuberculosis clinics at tertiary hospitals in Peshawar, Pakistan. METHODS: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted from 1st May 2019 to 31st October 2019 at three tertiary care hospitals (Lady Reading Hospital, Khyber Teaching Hospital and Hayatabad Medical Complex) in Peshawar, Pakistan. Sample size was calculated by using OpenEpi software, taking prevalence of substance abuse as 50%. PTB patients (n=423) aged 17-60 years were recruited through convenient sampling technique. Data was collected from tuberculosis patients through validated questionnaires: Alcohol, Smoking & Substance Involvement Screening Test & Poverty Score Card. RESULTS: Out of 423 patients, 264 (62.4%) were males. Majority (n=331;78.3%) of the participants belonged to 'middle-income group. Mean age of the participants was 39.33±13.76 years. Frequency of substance abuse amongst sampled tuberculosis population was 54.9% (n=232/423). The most common substance abuse included tobacco products (22.7%), sleeping pills (6.6%), opioids (6.1%) and cannabis (5.7%). A significant association was detected between substance abuse and income of participants-low and high income group had higher reported substance abuse than middle income group (p<0.001). Our study found a statistically significant association between gender and substance abuse (p-value <0.01) with more females (63.63%) than males (50.38%) reported being involved in substance abuse. CONCLUSION: More than half of PTB patients, substance abuses. Gender and socioeconomic factors have significant association with substance abuse.
