This is a study of the services provided by Indian libraries during the COVID-19 lockdown and the problems faced by the libraries in providing their services. Using a Google Forms questionnaire survey, responses were sought from librarians through library groups covering schools, colleges and universities, mailing list forums and WhatsApp/Telegram groups. The findings show that libraries strived to stay connected with the users and provided remote services. Many libraries developed library/digital guides and e-content and responded to online reference queries. Librarians frequently participated in webinars. © 2021, National Institute of Science Communication and Information Resources. All rights reserved.

This paper explores the influence of select economic variables on total citations and citations per document as obtained from Scopus from 2016 to 2018. The analysis considered 32 countries that contribute 90% of the scholarly output. Variables considered in the study included citations, citable documents, total expenditure on R&D per capita ($), researchers in R&D per capita, GDP (PPP) per capita and university education index. Based on multiple regression equation, the output broadly confirms the earlier observation of citation intensity going with wealth intensity of nations. However, on closer examination based on the obtained regression equation, aberration between expected and obtained total citations and citations per document could be observed for India and several other countries. The paper sees a need to include a taxonomy of motivations to cite and contributor taxonomy to make the citation measures meaningful.

The purpose of this research was to examine the status of library users' adoption of e-books in line with Rogers's Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) theory and Gartner’s Hype Cycle (GHC) Model in the context of Fiji National University (FNU). The FNU Library introduced e-books to its user community in 2014. Purposively chosen 40 undergraduate students from the College of Business, Hospitality and Tourism Studies were selected as the sample to conduct in-depth interviews. The study revealed that the participants' e-book adoption habits were primarily divided among early adopters, early majority, and late majority. The results disclosed many factors that influence the adoption of e-books, such as familiarity with the technology, personal taste, exposure to trial access, use of preferred access devices and enthusiasm for reading. Findings indicate that e-books adoption of university undergraduates in line with the DOI and GHC paradigms has substantiated how the underpinning theories could help interpret the adoption of e-books in teaching and learning environment. Thus, this research will help librarians and educators develop a robust mechanism for better understanding the inherent status-quo of e-book usage in higher education institutions. These research findings will also help develop strategies that can significantly enhance universities' traditional teaching and learning performance with emerging technologies.

ORCID: Issues and concerns about its use for academic purposes and research integrity ORCID:

ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) was launched in 2012 as an initiative to fortify the validity and integrity of academic publishing through author name disambiguation. Less than a decade later, this portal is being actively promoted in an attempt to ensure that academics adhere to this permanent identifier. Without a doubt, a complete, up-to-date and authentic ORCID has value, not only to a researcher, but to the academic community because it allows facilitated online submissions, and links to funding agencies and other profiles. The mandatory requirement of an ORCID account for the submitting or corresponding author, sometimes for all authors, is becoming more common during the submission of manuscripts to ORCID member journals. Not only are there issues pertaining to academic freedom, or unfair treatment of those without an ORCID, there are other highly pertinent, unpalatable, and contentious issues related to ORCID that need greater attention and debate. These include the inconsistent implementation of ORCID among co-authors, the existence of empty or “ghost” ORCID accounts that are uninformative and thus of limited use, and the plausible abuse of ORCIDs to register potentially fake elements. These issues would not only reduce trust in ORCID, which is actively promoted as a tool for maintaining science’s integrity, they may land up weakening a publishing system that was meant to be fortified by this initiative. They may also hurt the reputation of valid ORCID users who share a platform with “ghost” ORCID accounts or with fake authors, or authors whose identities are unverifiable.

Twenty-two heritage and modern libraries in the Jammu province of Jammu & Kashmir were studied to understand the digitization status and types of services offered to users. Much of the data were collected from the respective institutes/library websites wherever these were available. For libraries that did not have websites or where the websites were not updated, the librarians of the institutes were interviewed to gather data. The findings show that most of these libraries maintain a unique collection of manuscripts and rare documents of historical importance that need to be preserved for future generations. A few of the libraries have initiated digitization projects to preserve the rare collection of documents. We recommend that the information scientists in Jammu province should continuously make efforts to take up the process of digitization in libraries to serve their users in an effective manner and preserve the knowledge for future generations.

The study presents the subject analysis of Punjabi language books written in ‘Gurmukhi’ script from 2004-2013 covering different fields of arts and humanities, social sciences, science, engineering, and technology. The distribution of major subjects and their subdivisions were based on the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) 22 nd edition. The information centres, and academic institutions such as universities from the different parts of Northern India, having a good collection of Punjabi language books were the focus for data collection. The Punjabi language books publishers and several websites/resources were also consulted to get the required information. A total number of 7997 Punjabi books on different subjects published during the period 2004-2013 have been studied. The largest number of books in Punjabi [5587 (69.9%)] is published in the field of literature. Subject analysis, decadal growth, analysis of books translations from different Indic and foreign languages to the Punjabi language are also included in the study. A growth rate of 29.37% in the publication of Punjabi books is seen during the decade.
