This study investigates the effect of scientific position, service tenure, and age of women scientists of various research laboratories of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India on the research productivity. Drawing on a sample of 902 women scientists of various research laboratories, with their 22,617 publications extracted from Web of Science & Scopus databases, the results show that CSIR scientists have more women per laboratory, DST women scientists have more publication per scientists and DBT women scientists received more citations. The majority of the publications were published by scientists who have post-doctoral or doctorate degrees and most of the papers were published by the women scientists between age 31 and 40. However, per scientist publication reveals that there is a continuous increase of publication with the increase of service and physical age. Therefore, better funding opportunities for young researchers and retaining experienced women scientists for more years may be important to increase women's participation in science.

This paper traces one hundred and twenty years journey of Indian physics and astronomy journals. Of the 122 journals that have been published since 1902, 36 journals have ceased publication. The oldest physics related article was published in 1788 in Asiatick Researches , the first Indian research periodical. The oldest Indian astronomy journal Publications of the Maharaja Takhtasingji Observatory came into being in 1902 from Pune and ceased in 1912. The oldest Indian physics journal Bhoutika Kalanidhi or The Treasury of the Physical Sciences started in the year 1911 from Madras (present-day Chennai) and ceased in 1919. In all, 53% of journals belong to broad science discipline but publish articles on physics and astronomy regularly along with other major science disciplines followed by 35% and 12% journals strictly belong to the subject areas, physics, and astronomy respectively. It is observed that nearly 50% of journals are indexed by the Indian Citation Index, while 20% of journals are indexed by the Indian Citation Index, Scopus, and Web of Science. Also, 30% of journals are not indexed by any citation database. In the 120 year period, the highest number of seven journals came into being in the year 2012.

Data pertaining to 359 doctoral theses from the Department of Geography, Calcutta University during 1935-2019 have been collected from the website of UGC-INFLIBNET, Central library of the Calcutta University and through a questionnaire survey of the currently serving faculty members and research scholars. The temporal pattern with decadal productivity, subject area classification as per Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and sub-classification (second level) and further sub-division (third level) based on narrow terms, supervisor-wise production of thesis, gender distribution of thesis guided and the productivity of supervisors, gender distribution of researchers, etc. are the dimensions analysed. The study shows that temporal distribution is widely asymmetric with a very few theses in the initial decades and many theses produced in the recent years. Similarly, though there is greater gender parity in recent years among the research scholars, there is gender bias towards male faculty members as for guidance of Ph. D. theses are concerned.
