ABSTRACT Objective: This study explored cortical auditory evoked potential (CAEPs) elicited by speech sounds in children with unilateral congenital aural atresia (CAA). Design: Twelve children (8 males) aged 7–16 years (M age 10.0, SD 3.1) with unilateral CAA took part in the study. Results were compared to a control group of 15 children 5–16 years (M age 9.5, SD 3.4 years) with normal hearing bilaterally. CAEPs to speech in noise (+5 dB signal-to-noise ratio) were recorded. Results: P1 amplitudes were larger for frontal locations regardless of the stimulus, ear of presentation, group (CAA vs. normal hearing), or age. Younger participants had larger P1 amplitude across electrodes. For N250 responses, CAEPs evoked by /ti/ had the shortest latency, followed by /di/and/gi/. Older children presented with shorter N250 latencies for /ti/, regardless of electrode location or group or ear of presentation. Conclusions: CAEPs in children with a moderate conductive congenital unilateral hearing loss showed typical developmental and stimulus effects. We did not find group differences when CAEPs of children with atresia were compared to control participants. Better understanding of typical development and changes in CAEPs over time in children with CAA is needed to ascertain whether unilateral hearing loss due to CAA has effects on CAEPs that correlate with perceptual effects.

Design: Twelve children (8 males) aged 7–16 years (M age 10.0, SD 3.1) with unilateral CAA took part in the study. Results were compared to a control group of 15 children 5–16 years (M age 9.5, SD 3.4 years) with normal hearing bilaterally. CAEPs to speech in noise (+5 dB signal-to-noise ratio) were recorded. Results: P1 amplitudes were larger for frontal locations regardless of the stimulus, ear of presentation, group (CAA vs. normal hearing), or age. Younger participants had larger P1 amplitude across electrodes. For N250 responses, CAEPs evoked by /ti/ had the shortest latency, followed by /di/and/gi/. Older children presented with shorter N250 latencies for /ti/, regardless of electrode location or group or ear of presentation. Conclusions: CAEPs in children with a moderate conductive congenital unilateral hearing loss showed typical developmental and stimulus effects. We did not find group differences when CAEPs of children with atresia were compared to control participants. ABSTRACT Aims and objectives Premature and medically fragile infants in neonatal intensive care may be establishing oral feeding skills during their admission. Not all infants can achieve breastfeeding and bottle feeding is the recognised alternative. Choosing a bottle with a manageable flow rate can enable a positive feeding experience. The flow rate of teats used on an Australian NICU were tested to determine their actual flow rate and the variation of flow observed. Design and methods Flow rate of five different teats were tested by attaching each teat to a breast pump and measuring the output of milk after 1 minute. Range of flow rate and variability in flow rate values of the five teats used were compared. Results and conclusions The results identified differing flow rates as well as individual variation of flow rates for all teats used on an Australian NICU.The Sepal Green /small size nipple/slow flow was the fastest flow rate teat (mean 25.34 mL /minute). The Sepal White / ultra-slow flow teat had the slowest flow rate (mean 7.34 mL/minute). Measurement of variability in flow rate identified a moderate - high mean flow rate for the Sepal White ultra -slow flow teats (CoV = 0.2), with a low mean flow rate for Sepal Green slow flow / small nipple (CoV = 0.06). Data confirmed variability of flow rates both within and between teats used.Flow rate and variability are important factors to consider when selecting supportive feeding equipment for preterm infants.

ABSTRACT Parental perceptions towards stuttering and early treatment are vital in the identification and management of stuttering in children. The aims of this paper were to review the studies on parental perceptions towards stuttering and stuttering therapy, identify strengths and gaps in the relevant literature and provide recommendations for future research. A systematic review of the literature was undertaken. Six electronic databases were searched to identify studies that have explored parental perceptions towards stuttering and early treatment of stuttering. The search was limited to peer-reviewed studies, published in English between 1970 and 2019. Data were extracted from the eligible studies and the findings were analysed using a qualitative deductive content analysis approach. Twenty-one studies were included in the review, conducted in nine different countries, with the majority published in the past 10 years. Among them 12 studies have explored parental perceptions of stuttering and 11 have explored parental perceptions of stuttering therapy. Findings showed limited parental knowledge about stuttering and the presence of variable attitudes and reactions towards stuttering. Parental perceptions about stuttering therapy were generally positive. The review highlights the importance of educating parents about causal factors, progression and impact of stuttering as well as the importance of early intervention. The absence of research in countries where speech and language pathology as a profession is emerging, suggests the need to explore parental perceptions towards stuttering which will impact on quality of life of children who stutter.
