  • Wasserman Prize

With gratitude to the Wasserman Prize committee (Marc Dollinger, Melissa Klapper, and Eric Goldstein), The American Jewish Historical Society is pleased to announce this year's winner of the Wasserman Prize, awarded for the best article published in the 2021 volume of American Jewish History:

Britt P. Tevis, "Trends in the Study of Antisemitism in United States History," American Jewish History 105, nos. 1/2, 2021.

After praising the stellar quality of the entire 2021 volume, the committee had this to say: Rather than just cataloging or even assessing, Britt Tevis uses this state of the field essay to advance the field. She underlines the importance of acknowledging persistent, serious antisemitism in American history as seen through numerous social, legal, and cultural institutions while also pointing the way forward for contextualizing adjacent debates about privilege, power, and whiteness.

Richard Gribble
“evangelical Protestants and conservative Catholics” in 2016 was partly due to vestiges of the “visible and powerful . . . conservative religious reaction” to President Kennedy, even though Kennedy’s education, Peace Corps, and foreign policy efforts had heartened many evangelical Protestants (183–184). Polling would reveal that Catholic support for Kennedy grew during his administration. And while more Catholic voters chose Trump than picked his opponent in 2016, more Catholics had selected liberal Democrats Lyndon Johnson, Hubert Humphrey, Jimmy Carter (once), Bill Clinton (twice), Al Gore, and Barack Obama (twice) than had opted for their rivals. This is a good book, a valuable addition to the historiography on John F. Kennedy’s faith and presidency. It would complement other studies of the intersection between religion, politics, and the presidents in advanced undergraduate and graduate courses. But it could have been even better—if only the author had heard more footsteps.
