ENGLISH: The essay analyzes the perception of the wolf in contemporary times. The article is devoted to the application of the literacy theory in the historical studies. The key issue is to verify the accuracy of the literacy theorists’ claims with reference to the medieval Arab-Muslim culture. The point of reference is the development of the judgeship ( qadiship ). Basing on the analysis of this process the article traces the schemes of transformations which occur – according to the literacy theorists – in the context of the institutional dimension of culture under the influence of writing. The application of the theoretical model of the mutual relations of orality and literacy to the specific socio-cultural reality (i.e. from the first years of Islam to the middle of the ninth century, when the qadiship reached its maturity structurally and functionally) allows to track out “the logic of writing”. The identity of the judgeship was constructed on the basis of a perception of the world formed by the literate communicative order. In other words, the development of the office itself was attained as a result of the gradual textualisation of culture, including the legal culture and the law itself. However, co-occurrence of orality, determined by the manuscript character of the medieval Arab-Muslim culture as well as the dominant world-view factors causing specific values to penetrate into social practice, made the potential for change (carried by writing) manifest itself in a limited extent in the very operation of the institution of qadi . / ENGLISH: During the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries efforts were made to codify a language of licit dance, by reorganising and controlling gestures and making the boundaries of choral dancing clearer and more systematic in terms of non-interference with sacred space and time. The article analyses documents that deal with the repercussions of transgression in choral dancing on the evolution of performances, and in particular on the suspension of the temporal sphere and on the expansion of dance. I address the subject by comparing exemplaristic and literary sources from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries produced in Western Europe, and especially in France and Italy, i.e. those areas where court dances had developed the most.

This paper explores violence against religious houses as an indicator of the limits of political negotiation and consensus building in early medieval polities. It analyses records of attacks against religious houses and clerics from Leon (NW Iberia) that escape traditional interpreta- tions of violence as a tool in the negotiation of social relations, and construes the events as an ex- pression of local social cleavages. In so doing, it provides a guideline for probing similar records in ways that might illuminate aspects of social relations and dynamics otherwise obscured by the dominant themes of the documentary sources from this period.

ENGLISH: The essay aims to provide a possible solution to an old historiographical and archival enigma: why are late medieval and Renaissance account books present in Florentine (and more generally Tuscan) archives with an almost overflowing abundance, as compares to the rather scant Italian (not to say European) panorama? Why have more account books dating from the 13th and 16th centuries been preserved between Florence and Prato than in the rest of Europe? And finally, how can we explain that even in the late grand-ducal age the family archives of the Florentine nobles still preserved ledgers, cashbooks and journals written a few centuries earlier, despite these writings seemingly had no practical usefulness whatsoever? By employing multiple perspectives – economic history, the history of techniques and cultural formation, socio-political history – the author compares the Florentine case with other great Italian mercantile cities, in the end yielding a picture of Florence slightly different from the stereotyped image of the cradle of Humanism.
