This article analyses the diffusion of milk consumption in Spain between 1865 and 1980, and uses a new statistical approach to estimate consumer groups and their milk consumption. This new methodology shows that these variables increased at different speeds chronologically and geographically. Two main phases can be distinguished in terms of the diffusion of milk consumption. The first phase, between the mid-19th century and the 1950s, was characterised by concentrated consumption in producer regions and big cities and the persistence of stark differences between regions. The second, between the 1950s and the 1980s, was chiefly characterised by an increase in the total number of consumers and the disappearance of these regional differences.

The emergence of agricultural export regions in Latin America during the second half of the nineteenth century often involved the use of credit as a central mechanism in the organisation of production and marketing. This article presents an analysis of the operation of credit in the tobacco export economy that existed in the Colombian Caribbean during that period. The particularity of this case is that it was a region with plenty of free land available for the peasantry. The question is tackled on whether, even in an agrarian structure of this kind, credit to farmers implied the coercive labour relations. It is concluded that credit was the mechanism by which traders could push farmers to produce tobacco, but that this relationship went beyond the mere logic of exploitation, and also included elements of paternalism, “cronyism”, and friendship.

The issue of traffic rates is understudied in Spanish railway historiography. Its analysis is complex, due to the dispersal of data and the constant changes in the ways it was originally collected. Besides, the general tariff had a large number of special regimes that companies used to stimulate demand and improve operational results.

In this paper, we propose a diachronic study for the 1844-1935 period. We will highlight the key moments in the development of tariff policies by railway companies, under the supervision of the State. Also, we will make an estimate of the evolution of average railway ticket prices in Spain and analyze how it affected the general characteristics and habits of the users.

This paper presents a first approach to the study of the presence and activity of different Spanish bankers operating in Paris between 1820 and 1940. This study also pays particular attention to the trajectory of three different banking houses that were able to survive their respective founders (the Uribarren-Abaroa Bank, the Mijtans-Movellan Bank, and the Gil Bank). An analysis is also made on the origin of the capital base that allowed these Banking houses, on how the American horizon was present in its activity, and what were the main sources of their activity, as well as the links that these bankers and their Banking houses had with Spanish capitalism.

The aim of this article is to analyze the determinants of celibacy at 45 years of age in the generations born between 1785 and 1965. Men and women will be analyzed separately, based on individual variables, such as family, economic, nutritional, physical and behavioural factors. To do this we will divide the period into two sub-periods, one pre-transitional (born between 1785 and 1900) and another transitional and post-transitional (born between 1900 and 1965). The microdata for the analysis comes from nine rural municipalities of the region of Aragon, in north-eastern Spain. The results will highlight the influence of the family, economic, nutritional and physical contexts on the marital status at the age of 45.

This study focuses on analysing economic developments in the Balearic Islands between 1950 and 2015, with an emphasis on the process of the loss of industrial assets and the decisive advance in the service sector, particularly tourism. Theoretical arguments from the economic literature are used to specify whether this industrial decline, which involves the outsourcing of the economy, is due to the absolute disappearance of any other initiative apart from the service sector. The authors use macroeconomic variables of Balearic Islands to set the general context, and an analysis of the input-output tables, a key tool in national accounts, in order to study this hypothesis: services in mature economies can stimulate transformation activities if a more comprehensive and current view of the manufacturing concept is adopted.
