Background: The article presents the results of research on mountain tourism in the Apuseni Mountains in Romania, especially in the field of safety and health (physical condition) of participants of expeditions to the mountains and their knowledge about the risks that may be encountered in these destinations and the methods of informing about these threats (proposed markings and information about hazards in the mountains, and placed on hiking trails). Material and methods: 45 volunteer young people were involved in the research. The methods used were: 1) field testing method; we monitored the evolution of the heart rate and correlated it with the geographical area; 2) survey/questionnaire method; through a questionnaire, were subjectively identified the potentially hazardous areas and the reasons why they were considered as such; 3) direct observation method; we made a correlation between the subjective physiological response (accelerated breathing, suffocation, sweating) and the area in which they occurred. Results: Monitoring the evolution of the heart rate has allowed highlighting areas where prolonged physical exertion can generate a state of fatigue that can become acute, thus promoting decreased ability to pay attention and focus. The recommendation that accompanies the proposed tourist sign on several levels of intensity, induces the “obligation” of the recovery break, thus inducing the return of attention and the ability to concentrate. Other areas that may present a significant potential of risk or danger to tourists, by slipping or overloading muscles or areas with a complex geographical structure that require specific skills: balance, muscle strength, etc., have been identified using the questionnaire. Conclusions: Based on all the information collected, depending on the characteristics of the type of risk, we propose to complete the catalogue of tourist signs with more specific information. We assume that informative signs that we propose and the additional information they contain can contribute to the avoidance of some limit situations that would determine the occurrence of some incidents or accidents. The better educated and informed tourists are, the safer their way will be.

Background: The results of monitoring the physical health of 16–17-year-old girls who became first-year students of Khmelnytskyi Humanitarian-Pedagogical Academy during 2016–2019 have been analysed in the article. Material and Methods: 1670 female students participated in the research. In the course of the research, the number of people belonging to the main, preparatory and special medical group was determined, as well as those who were exempted from attending physical education classes. Results: The results of the research have found that there is a tendency for an increase in the number of female students exempted from attending physical education classes from 3.17% to 6.60%, and the increase in the number of female students assigned for health reasons to special medical groups at physical education classes from 6.57% to 11.93%. Conclusions: The analysis of changes of anthropometric indicators of girls showed that there is a growing number of overweight female students from 9.2% to 11.7%, and from 1.2% to 1.7% of those who have 1–2 degree of obesity. The analysis of functional indicators of physical condition showed that 21.8% of female students had deviations in age-related heart rate, and the indicator of vital capacity of lungs in 34.8% of female students was lower than the established norm. An analysis of the Robinson index showed that the level of energy potential of female students tends to deteriorate.

Background: There is increasing evidence that practicing tai chi or yoga can improve the elderly’s physical performance. This study aimed to compare the effects of tai chi and yoga on balance and leg muscle strength in the elderly. Material & Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 90 elderly persons who practice tai chi (n = 36), yoga (n = 23), and a control group (n = 31). The balance function was assessed using the single-leg stance (SLS) test, while leg muscle strength (LMS) was assessed using a leg-back dynamometer. A Chi-square, Spearman rank test, one-way ANOVA with LSD post hoc were applied. The significance was set at p<0.05. Results: One-way ANOVA showed a difference in LMS and SLS between groups (p<0.01). LSD post hoc analysis found the difference in LMS between tai chi and yoga (64.3 vs. 41.5, p<0.01) and tai chi and control (64.3 vs. 30.4, p<0.01). The difference was also found in SLS between tai chi and control (36.7 vs. 6.2, p<0.01) and between yoga and control (41.4 vs. 6.2, p<0.01). Conclusion: Elderly persons who participated in tai chi and yoga demonstrated higher LMS and SLS performance than the sedentary participants. The tai chi group showed better muscle strength than the yoga group.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between perceived health outcomes of recreation, exercise dependence, and life satisfaction among fitness center members. Material and methods: The study sample consisted of 490 participants, 336 males, and 154 females, who were members of a private fitness center in Istanbul. The participants were selected using a purposeful sampling method. Data collection tools included the Perceived Health Outcomes of Recreation Scale, developed by Gomez et al. and adapted to Turkish by Yerlisu Lapa et al., the Exercise Dependence-21 Scale, developed by Hausenblans and Downs and adapted by Gürbüz and Aşçı and the Life Satisfaction Scale developed by Diener et al. and adapted by Yetim. The data were analyzed using independent t-test, MANOVA, and Pearson correlation analysis. Results: The independent t-test results showed a significant difference in LSS scores by gender. MANOVA analysis results revealed that the main effect of gender on the sub-dimensions of PHORS was not significant, but there was a difference in the PSYC sub-dimension. Besides, the main effect of gender on ED-21 and all sub-dimensions was significant. Conclusions: There was a positive and moderate relationship between LSS and PHORS; a negative and low-level correlation between LSS and ED-21, and between PHORS and ED-21.

Introduction: The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between shooting performance and pulmonary functions and respiratory muscle strength in archers. Material and methods: The research was conducted with 31 boy and 11 girl archers aged 9-12. The forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiration volume in one second (FEV1), FEV1/FVC, peak expiratory flow (PEF), maximum voluntary ventilation (MVV), maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP), and maximum expiratory pressure (MEP) of the archers were measured. To determine the shooting performance, a total of 30 shots (15+15) were taken from an 18-meter distance in closed shooting range. Results: A significant difference was found between the 15 shots done in each half and the total shot point and the averages of FVC (r=0.375, 0.353, 0.378 respectively) and FEV1 (r=0.368, 0.339, 0.367 respectively). However, a significant difference was not found among these shot points and other respiratory parameters (p>0.05). A relationship was detected between the second 15-shot points of boy archers and MEP (r=0.370). Conclusions: A strong correlation was not found between the respiratory parameters and shooting performances of the archers in this study. However, it is thought that this level of relationship will rise as training level and age increases.

Background: This study was designed to examine the relationship between perceived freedom in leisure and psychological resilience of university staff. Material and Methods: The sample group of the study was composed of 189 academic and 81 administrative university staff (Mage=36.11±7.34). Participants were assessed based on the “Perceived Freedom in Leisure Scale (T-PFLS)” and the “Brief Resilience Scale (T-BRS)”. ANOVA, independent samples t-test, and Pearson correlation analysis methods were used to analyze the data. Results: T-test analysis indicated that there was no significant difference between the mean scores of “T-PFLS”; however, there was a statistically significant difference between the mean scores of “T-BRS” with regard to gender. The male participants’ mean scores were higher than those of the female participants. The analysis revealed statistically significant differences in “T-PFLS” and “T-BRS” mean scores with respect to the position at the university. ANOVA analysis indicated statistically significant differences in mean scores of “T-PFLS” and “T-BRS” with respect to leisure participation preference. The mean scores of frequent participants were higher than the others in both of the scales. There was a statistically significant positive and moderate correlation between the mean scores of “T-PFLS” and “T-BRS” scores. Conclusion: As a result, active participants reported higher perceived freedom and psychological resilience scores.

Background: The aim of this study was to compare the lower limb muscle strength in terms of gender and limb dominancy in prepubescent swimmers. Material and Methods: Seventy-four prepubescent swimmers (mean age: 11.01±1.58 years; 42 boys; 32 girls) who were training for at least 8 hours a week and without current lower limb pain participated in the study. Isometric muscle strength of lower limb was measured by hand-held dynamometry. Independent samples-t test was used to determine the difference between genders, while paired samples-t test was used for dominant-nondominant side comparison. The significance level was accepted as p<0.05. Results: Knee flexion (p<0.001), extension (p<0.001) and ankle dorsiflexion (p=0.003) muscle strength were stronger on the dominant side than on the non-dominant side. Knee flexion/extension strength ratio was similar (p=0.957); while ankle plantar flexion/dorsiflexion strength ratio was significantly different (p=0.011). Boys swimmers had stronger isometric muscle strength in the dominant side together with knee flexion (p=0.018) and knee flexion extension strength ratio (p=0.007) than girls swimmers. Conclusion: Boys swimmers had higher dominant side knee flexion muscle strength compared to female peers. Gender and lower limb dominancy might be important for lower limb muscle strength to show varieties in prepubescent swimmers before planning a training program.
