This article examines linguistic socialisation and communicative practices in contemporary Spanish families during a child’s first two years of life. We focus on two families who worked towards additive bilingualism in their family communicative practices, with the goal of promoting the acquisition of more than one language early on in the children’s development. The two cases reflect non-conventional family projects, one family led by a single mother by choice and one by a lesbian couple. Our analysis focuses on three aspects: 1) the interactional and communicative ecologies that emerge as part of the linguistic decisions made by the mothers, focusing particularly on the maternal voicing of children’s ‘talk’; 2) how these ecologies develop over the first two years of children’s lives; 3) how these interactional dynamics intertwine with the linguistic and parenting ideologies of mothers. Our analysis contributes to unpacking how Family Language Policy operates during the early stages of children’s communicative development and shows how, in fact, family language planning practices and parental projects intertwine.

In this article, we analyse the language regimentation of multilingual repertoires and plurilingual practices of young people of Moroccan origin in three different areas of Spain – Barcelona, Galicia, and Madrid. By focusing on the family and the school as two highly interconnected settings (Heller, 2012) which have an impact on their socialisation trajectories and on their development of functional bi/multilingualism – and, thus, on their linguistic practices – we consider, on the one hand, how these young people position themselves regarding multilingualism and the conception of a local and transnational plurilingual speaker and, on the other, how they invest their linguistic repertoire in the transnational space or what Hornberger (2005) calls the ‘implementational spaces’ of multilingual practices. Following a sociolinguistic and discursive critical analysis of the data collected (ethnographic data, the results of several didactic activities, focus groups and interviews), the results point out how family and school discourses surrounding multilingualism contribute to maintaining a situation of multilingualism, which includes both the heritage languages and the institutional and national languages and varieties. Moreover, the results show the ways these plurilingual youth navigate this multilingualism but also how they reconstruct it by deploying hybrid and creative practices.

This article explores the language ideologies and language practices of a multilingual, high socioeconomic status family, resident in the United Kingdom, from a critical sociolinguistic perspective (Heller, Pietikäinen and Pujolar, 2018). Drawn from a larger, longitudinal, multi-sited ethnographic study, it focuses on a predominantly Russian/British family of high socioeconomic status. The study concentrates on their daily rituals. Socialization moments are revealed, and the mechanisms and underpinning ideologies are analysed, drawing upon the approach of Goffman (1956). It explores how their language ideologies and practices may be deemed constitutive of a neoliberal self (Urciuoli, 2008), and how they create and present a cosmopolitan class identity. It makes a methodological contribution by demonstrating how ethnographic participant observation is valuable in FLP research. Such an approach enables an understanding of which ideologies are actually enacted through which practices in the face of acceptance, resistance or conflicting ideologies from other family members, and the other constraints of daily life.

social value of Spanish among transnational Latin American families in Italy

M. Bonomi
The aim of this paper is to explore the value of Spanish through the study of the ideologies and subjectivities represented in the discursive practices of some transnational Latin American families that underwent processes of diaspora to Italy. In particular, the goal is to focus on their family language policies by exploring the relationship between linguistic uses, identities, and ideologies. In the current context of neoliberalism, many scholars have highlighted how language has become a commodity (Holborow, 2007; Block, Gray, and Holborow, 2012; Heller and Duchêne, 2012) or, in terms of Bourdieu (1991), a symbolic capital, i.e., a system of values that social actors associate with a particular linguistic use in a specific economic and political context, determined by certain power relations. In global contemporary diasporas, in line with the colonial era (Mignolo, 1992; Heller and McElhinny, 2017), the perceptual and evaluation schemes of linguistic practices continue to be strongly determined by the centre-periphery relationship. This same language regime is reflected in the social value of Spanish that emerges in the discursive practices of Hispanic families in Italy. The data, in effect, demonstrate a clear perceptual inequality between the Spanish of the diaspora, marginalised by its condition of minority language and delegitimised for representing a deviation from the monoglossic norm (Silverstein, 1996), and the central languages (‘standard’ varieties of Spanish and Italian), understood as convertible resources in the global linguistic market and more desirable in terms of social mobility.

Carla Amorós-Negre
This article adopts the critical and ethnographic language policy approach (McCarty, 2011; Johnson and Ricento, 2013) to unveil the family language policy adopted by first-and second-generation Romanian parents in a diasporic context, Castelló de la Plana, the capital city of the Castelló province (Spain). The study focuses particularly on parents’ language ideologies and practices regarding the acquisition and use of Spanish, Catalan, and Romanian. The analysis of parental policies is pursued through 15 semi-directed interviews about life experiences produced in ethnographic research. By drawing on biographical narratives, I examine in detail how parents ground their position regarding language choices, transmission, or interruption of the home language and how multilingualism is perceived and valued by different generations. I conclude that first- and second-generation migrant parents mobilise different language ideologies in relation to the use of the heritage language and the translingual practices they deploy. I also report on the tensions migrant families experiment regarding languages in this neoliberal economic governmentality (Martín Rojo, 2019) and how language policy at the family level sometimes supports and reproduces the institutional discourses and hegemonic nation states’ policies and at other times challenges them.
