Introduction: Adults living with a neurodevelopmental disorder may present episodes of aggression, which may lead to the use of seclusion or restraint. The aim of the study was to assess the effect of an intervention aimed at reducing the use of coercive measures in a long-term care unit for adults suffering from a neurodevelopmental disorder with or without psychiatric co-morbidities.

Method: The single-center study used a sequential mixed-methods explanatory design. Retrospective data on periods of seclusion, with and without physical restraint, were collected for the ten-month pre-intervention and post-intervention periods. A qualitative survey was conducted at the end of the intervention period among the health professionals working in the unit to review the implementation and the efficiency of the approach.

Results: A significant decrease was observed between the pre- and post-intervention period in the number of seclusion and restraint sequences, the number of patients experiencing seclusion and restraint, and the duration of seclusion and restraint sequences. The efficiency of the approach was confirmed by the health care professionals and was attributed to leadership focused on limiting coercive measures, better adherence to legal obligations, team cohesion, and the implementation of alternative tools and methods.

Discussion: Reducing the use of coercive measures with adults with neurodevelopmental disorders is possible. Further studies are needed to confirm the effectiveness of alternative strategies to seclusion and restraint.

Introduction: In 2009, the French Association de recherche en soins infirmiers (Nursing Research Association) counted fifty-four nurses holding a doctorate or working toward one. Recent developments in this area include the creation of section 92, for nursing sciences, in the National Council of Universities, making it possible for nurses in France to become professors with teaching and research responsibilities.

Objectives: To update and complete the 2009 data by identifying the grades, fields of activity, and disciplines of nurses holding a doctorate or studying for one.

Method: A quantitative descriptive study was carried out using an online questionnaire between December 1, 2021 and March 22, 2022.

Results: the study involved 147 nurses working in France: seventy-five with a doctorate and 72 doctoral students. The majority of the respondents were women, held a supervisory position, and were working in the field of education. Among the doctorates obtained, education sciences accounted for the largest share. However, this disciple was less well represented among the doctoral candidates.

Discussion: This study shows a change in the characteristics of nurses who are also doctoral candidates and in the disciplines in which they have obtained or are currently obtaining a doctorate, and an increase in the value of the degree, particularly in research, but little access to academic posts.

Introduction: The number of students with disabilities in higher education is increasing. Dyslexia is the most common form of disability. Few reports on this subject focus on health-sector education in France.

Objectives: The survey sought to characterize and understand the support provided in nursing training institutes with regard to dyslexia.

Methods: A mixed survey was carried out in 2022, mainly involving disability referents in nursing institutes. A national questionnaire collected 113 responses from metropolitan and overseas France, then three focus groups brought together twenty-eight participants from ten different regions.

Results: In 2022, the most frequent measures were related to assessments and institutional communication. However, they lacked structure. There were still gaps, especially in the area of work placement.

Discussion: In addition to the disability referents, all stakeholders must be made aware of the needs of students with dyslexia. Greater visibility of disability could also change attitudes in the health care sector.

Conclusion: Specific support for dyslexia has been introduced in nursing training institutes. Its development requires a change in the attitudes of the stakeholders. It could then be extended to other health training courses.

Introduction: The importance of a quality relationship between young adults living with dual diagnosis and their health care providers is well documented.

Context: Although this complex phenomenon was mostly studied from an individual perspective, the results indicated the systemic nature of this relationship.

Objective: This study aims to better understand the relationship between young adults living with dual diagnosis and their health care providers, with a systemic perspective.

Method: Six data bases were consulted; manual research in gray literature and references screening enhanced the process.

Results: Of a total of 532 studies and reports identified, 44 were included in the review. Thematic data analysis was carried out, and two themes were identified: the health care system as a constraining environment; and the relationship at the heart of care.

Discussion: This study confirms the joint role played by the young adult in question and their health care provider in developing and maintaining the relationship, by acknowledging the importance of the care, of mutual confidence, and of a hierarchic relationship.

Conclusion: This integrative review provides a basis for future nursing interventions that foreground the relationship and take a systemic approach.

Introduction: In 1989, experts developed the Rome criteria classification coupled with the use of the Bristol scale, to objectify the condition of functional constipation.

Background: Nowadays, little is documented in the literature about transit disorders in patients with End-Stage Chronic Renal Failure treated with peritoneal dialysis, even though this causes non-negligible complications on the patient’s morbidityÌ, comfort and quality of life.

Objective: The main objective of our study was to evaluate the prevalence of constipation in CKD patients.

Material and method: We conducted a retrospective multicenter data-driven study.

Results: 74 patient records were analyzed. We found a prevalence of constipation of 58% in patients with CKD.

Discussion: Our results showed that the prevalence of constipation is frequent in patients with CKD. It leads to a significant discomfort for the patient, an additional cost in terms of care and technical procedures and a failure of the peritoneal dialysis technique.

Conclusion: Thus, the prevention of constipation in CKD patients would be relevant to limit complications and ensure a better quality of life.

Context: Chronic kidney disease affects 7 to 10 percent of the French population. Entering the end stage of the disease requires a choice to be made between several options. The aim is to document the nursing practices used to support these patients in choosing their renal replacement therapy and to determine the elements that promote decision-making.

Method: This is a scoping review based on the methodology of Peters et al. of JBI.

Results: The nursing practices identified focus on empowerment, by intervening in: involvement, providing information, clarifying preferences, supporting deliberation, and assessing needs before, during, and after the decision-making process. The key factors identified are: an equal and trusting relationship, the personalization of the process, and emotional support, all provided by trained professionals.

Discussion: Several concepts shed light on decision support in a complementary and surprisingly paradoxical way: grief, adaptation, empowerment, and uncertainty.

Conclusion: This review shows nursing practices centered on helping the patient to take control of their life decisions. This experience causes a serious upheaval in patients’ lives, hence the importance of providing them with support in managing their emotions.

Nursing practice and the knowledge that supports it developed in close connection with biomedical practices/knowledge and physicians. This interprofessional and interdisciplinary relationship can be analyzed based on a critical and postcolonial reading, which seeks to emancipate and assert a disciplinary space for nursing that is both academic and professional. This text employs this approach and highlights the biomedical grounds of nursing practices and knowledge. It explores, in particular, power relations between physicians and nurses, patriarchal and gender relations, and conflicts in the definition of the nurse’s role. It provides a greater understanding of the aims of a postcolonial approach and its relevance in analyzing the discipline of nursing.

In 2019, the nursing sciences section of the Conseil national des universités des disciplines de santé was created. One of its missions is to evaluate the applications of candidates wishing to qualify as university professors and associate professors. Qualification authorizes the applicant to apply a competitive examination for the position of university professor or assistant professor at a French university offering a position. The members of the section must assess whether the requirements in terms of research, teaching, and expertise have been met by the candidate so that they can sit the competitive examination. As a result, there are a number of requirements, which it is useful to reiterate in order to enhance the quality of future applications. Only those requirements relating to qualification as a associate professor will be covered here.

Introduction: Patients experience a transition between health and a serious disease when they receive a diagnosis of cancer or of its recurrence.

Context: The implantation of a venous access device often takes places shortly after the diagnosis and is an additional stress factor.

Aim: Explore the unmet needs and expectations of patients after a venous access device has been implanted in order to offer specialized nursing care.

Method: An exploratory descriptive qualitative approach with deductive content analysis was used. Afaf Meleis’ transitions theory was the framework that guided the analysis. Data was collected from interviews with twelve patients.

Results: The results showed the vulnerability of patients during venous access device implantation. Personal, interpersonal, and organizational dimensions were found to hinder or facilitate the transition, influencing the quality of patients’ experience. Several coping strategies were used by patients to diminish their emotional distress.

Discussion: Support for self-care strategies, advance preparation, and adequate pain management help to reduce anxiety and insecurity.

Conclusion: Nurses must offer transition care in order to facilitate a positive experience of venous access device implantation.
