This study aims to describe and understand the care experience for people having undergone a liver transplantation in a Belgian academic hospital and the elements of an ideal care experience for them. The descriptive phenomenological method of the « Relational Caring Inquiry » was used with twelve participants whose stories were collected through three semi-structured individual interviews. These interviews gave an overall picture of their care experience, summarized as « the feeling of having benefited from the support of both the body and mind in a Humanist-Caring dynamic, but with difficulties linked to organizational and environmental factors in finding a new balance. » The essence of their ideal care experience consists of « benefiting from the support of both the body and mind by competent professionals, in a Humanist-Caring climate and a dynamic of partnership with the patient, in an institution that is welcoming in terms of its organization and environment. » Based on these results, it seems essential to limit organizational constraints to consolidate the Humanist-Caring dynamic, to develop the patient partnership, and to pay special attention to the patient’s relatives, resulting in structured support.

Introduction: Improving patients’ knowledge of diabetes would support adherence to treatment, prevent complications, and promote shared decision-making. Healthcare professionals need to assess patients’ knowledge using a validated questionnaire in the local language.

Objective: The aim of the study was to translate the Diabetes Knowledge Questionnaire from English to French and assess the psychometric properties of the translated version.

Methods: A cross-sectional method was used. Individuals with diabetes were recruited from diabetes clinics, as well as dialysis units, since approximately 30 percent of dialysis patients have diabetes. Participants with type 1 or type 2 diabetes completed the translated questionnaire. The questionnaire targeted both groups, with additional questions for those with type 1 diabetes. Reliability and validity were assessed according to COSMIN approach.

Results: Analysis of the translated questionnaire (n=102) showed good internal consistency (α=0.77), similar to the original questionnaire. The removal of an item on the self-monitoring of blood glucose increased the α Cronbach coefficient by 0.03.

Discussion: Despite its validation, the questionnaire should be updated according to new clinical and medical recommendations to ensure consistency between the desired knowledge and the intended goals of care.

Conclusion: The French version of the Diabetes Knowledge Questionnaire demonstrated good validity and reliability. It can be used in practice and research, after deleting item 9.

Including the humanities in health sciences training is a means of humanizing healthcare practice. The humanities and social sciences, but also artistic disciplines such as dance, film, theater, and literature make it possible to take into account the complexity of lived experiences and to deepen the notion of caring. In this paper, we revisit the relevance and usefulness of literature in educating healthcare workers. We analyze “Mend the Living”, a novel by Maylis de Kerangal that explores the issue of organ harvesting, to show how content of this kind can deepen caregivers' perspectives. Constantly referring to the text as if it were anthropological field data, we open the door to themes of significant phenomenological, ethical, political, and anthropo-sociological interest that could be used as spaces of encounter and pedagogical reflection.

Introduction: A large proportion of patients undergoing hip or knee replacement surgery experience preoperative anxiety, a predictor of postoperative pain.

Objective: To evaluate the preliminary effects of a preoperative nursing consultation incorporating therapeutic education with relaxation on pre- and postoperative anxiety and postoperative pain in patients undergoing hip or knee replacement surgery.

Method: Pre-experimental study conducted with a single group and several measurement times: before and after the consultation with a nurse; the day before surgery; and during the hospital stay.

Results: A total of 92 people participated in the study. There was a significant and progressive decrease in levels of pain and anxiety. The reduction in anxiety levels before/after the consultation (T0-T1) correlated with anxiety levels the day before surgery (T2), anxiety levels during the hospital stay (T3), and postoperative pain.

Discussion: This preoperative nursing consultation appears to have been effective in reducing levels of pre- and postoperative anxiety, as well as postoperative pain, in the patients studied.

Conclusion: This randomized clinical trial demonstrates the relevance of continuing to study this combined therapeutic approach in the management of pre- and postoperative anxiety and pain.

Introduction: Promoting the mental health of vulnerable elderly patients is a public health priority.

Context: In many cases, mental health interventions for elderly people are not appropriate for those with multiple physical disabilities.

Objectives: This article aims to provide gerontology professionals with an overview of the types of interventions available based on their practice setting (home or long-term care facility) and the characteristics of the people who use them (over 75 years old with physical disabilities).

Method: A systematic literature review was conducted using the PsycInfo, PubMed, and Cochrane databases, using data ranging from 2001-2022. All interventions aimed at addressing mental health issues were included, regardless of their research methodology.

Results: A total of 18 studies were included in this systematic review. The methodological limitations of these studies had a negative impact on our ability to draw conclusions and generalizations about the results of this review. However, the social and psychological support interventions studied seem to hold much promise.

Discussion: The provision of personalized support seems to be an important factor in determining the success of an intervention, whether at home or in a long-stay facility.

Conclusion: Further studies are needed to provide evidence of the effectiveness of these interventions.

Introduction: More than 39.7% of nurses report being victims of psychological harassment in the workplace. In 60% of cases, the abuse is vertical, involving a person in a position of authority.

Context: Few studies have examined this phenomenon without conflating it with other forms of workplace violence.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to shed light on cases of vertical violence experienced by nurses working in hospitals.

Method: Data was collected by means of semi-structured interviews with six nurses working in hospitals in the province of Quebec (Canada). Descriptive phenomenology was used to analyze the collected data.

Results: The overall effects of the vertical violence experienced by nurses in hospital settings resulted in less diligent and individualized nursing care.

Discussion: It is recommended that organizational policies against vertical violence put in place in hospital be enforced in a rigorous and transparent manner. Further investigation is needed to identify the organizational factors that contribute to vertical violence in hospital settings.

Introduction: The number of elderly patients admitted to emergency departments (EDs) continues to rise each year. However, due to time and structural constraints, these facilities do not allow for optimal identification of patients at risk of rehospitalization and loss of independence.

Objective: To identify the characteristics of patients over the age of 75 discharged from the ED without indications for hospitalization, and to illustrate the importance of advanced practice nurses (APN) in identifying predictive factors of loss of independence.

Method: A prospective, single-center, observational pilot study of a cohort of 67 patients in an emergency department.

Results: The study allowed the researchers to characterize a female, aging, and vulnerable patient population. Re-evaluation at the six-month mark revealed a functional decline in 23% of patients. Relevant predictive autonomy loss factors including recent cognitive decline, hearing impairment, and weight loss are put forward for future research.

Discussion: These results, in line with the findings of previous studies, highlight the potential added value of APNs in indentifying the functional decline within this patient population.

Conclusion: Given the diverse, complex, and fragile health condition of elderly patients when discharged from the emergency department, APNs play a key role in improving care and preventing loss of independence within this patient population.

As society faces up to the digital age, healthcare professionals must also adapt to this shift in line with the digital ambitions of the healthcare field. On reviewing the literature on the notions of use, practice, and adoption of digital technology, it is apparent that in France, compared to other countries, little data is available on the managerial practice of local health managers. The objective of this study was to measure the level of use and adoption of the digital workplace (DW) among these managers and to identify the factors influencing this use. This qualitative descriptive research was based on thirty semi-structured interviews conducted in France, in Normandy. The results, based on a categorical analysis, revealed a basic use of digital tools. Likewise, the level of adoption and mastery of these tools remained at a basic training level. The main factors that impact this phenomenon are technological, strategic, and related to the training and support policy in place. Managers do not operate in a DW. They are engaged in a process of instrumentation and instead operate within a computerized workplace. This level of use does not depend solely on an ontosystemic analysis of the manager in question. Emphasis should be given to ecosystemic reflections, centered on strategies for the rapid implementation of a contemporary digital culture.

Much the same as other healthcare services, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, psychiatric hospitals implemented significant and rapid changes in the organization of their services. The aim of this research study is to describe and understand the experience of nurses and nursing supervisors in psychiatric units in the light of the occupational transformations caused by the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the impact of these events on their relationships with patients. A consensual qualitative research study based on Hill's model was implemented. Sixteen individual interviews were conducted with eleven nurses and five nursing supervisors. The themes discussed can be grouped into five areas: aspects of the caregiving relationship, positive aspects of caregivers' experiences, negative aspects of caregivers' experiences, reflections on the post-pandemic era, and the role of supervisors. These five areas can be subdivided into 11 categories and 31 subcategories. Values, attitudes, and behaviors centered around a humanistic caring approach are identified as integral to future development. They appear to be elements of both the transformation process and the desired outcome. In light of these findings, it seems that an immediate rethink of the organization of care is needed.
