I was struck recently with the impressive renewed vitality in the field of World Englishes. While the overall study of the variation in English has been highly active in recent decades, with the growth of the English as a lingua franca paradigm, renewed work in English as an international language, and the emergence of a newer field known as ‘Global Englishes’, publications in World Englishes are at an almost unprecedented level. A new series, Routledge Studies in World Englishes, started in 2015 under the guidance of series editor Ee Ling Low of the National Institute of Education, Singapore. The series has already produced 19 volumes in just six years. In addition to looking at Inner and Outer Circle contexts such as the Shetland Islands, Australia, Africa, and Singapore, it includes volumes on Vietnam, China, South Korea, Japan, and Italy. It also includes volumes which look at varieties in a more regional manner – across varieties – such as in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), as well as East and South Asia. The pace of publication is increasing, with three or four books per year. A second significant contribution is the three-volume anthology Bloomsbury World Englishes, published in 2021. Mario Saraceni of Portsmouth University serves as overall editor, with volume 1, Paradigms edited by Britta Schneider and Theresa Heyd; volume 2, Ideologies edited by Rani Rubdy and Ruanni Tupas; and volume 3, Pedagogies edited by Yasemin Bayyurt of Boğaziçi University. The books have an attractive black matte finish, with blue, green, or purple phosphorescent typeface on the covers to easily distinguish the collection. Each volume has 17 contributions, separated into three thematic parts. These include fascinating new topics such as ‘Translingualism and World Englishes’, by Suresh Canagarajah (Pennsylvania State University) and Jerry Won Lee (University of California, Irvine). Finally, and perhaps most impressive, is the forthcoming Wiley-Blackwell Encyclopedia of World Englishes project, with Kingsley Bolton as chief editor. The encyclopedia will be online and also in print, comprising 17 separate volumes, each with its own sub-editor – all major scholars in the field. It is expected to have 400 chapters. The encyclopedia will also find a home for Expanding Circle Englishes, including volumes on Middle East and North African Englishes, European Englishes, and Central and South American Englishes. The various works here demonstrate the robust nature of the World Englishes paradigm, as well as its acknowledgment and exploration of new border-crossing domains and regions where English is used, in ever more complex and exciting contexts. English use in Brunei: Investigating the Gen Z 文莱的英语使用:Z世代调查

ABSTRACT Neoteric studies on the sociolinguistics of Brunei point to a changing linguistic scene that sees English growing in terms of popularity and importance particularly among young Bruneians. So popular is the language that some are also claiming to speak it as their mother tongue. This article seeks to explore this matter further by investigating contemporaneous English use vis-à-vis Malay in Brunei among Generation Z Bruneians. The findings reveal that young Bruneians are highly competent multilinguals, who hold English in high regard. Consequently, they claim English to be the language they are most proficient in. However, what is most intriguing is their association of English with the Bruneian identity, something that was almost unheard of before.

ABSTRACT An investigation of how an administrator developed and managed a local extracurricular program in an internationalized Asian university was conducted. The transcript resulting from an interview with the administrator of the extracurricular program and 56 monthly learning units of extracurricular program lesson outlines were analyzed, finding most of the program was led by international students, thereby exposing local students to English speakers from each of Kachru’s Three Circles of English (Inner, Outer, and Expanding). The presence and availability of international users of English and the ways in which they used English with local students benefited the development and implementation of the extracurricular program. The flexibility in the recruitment policy as well as the ways in which the extracurricular program was implemented supported recommendations found in the EIL/ELF literature. Unlike previous research, this study did not find a preference for hiring Inner Circle English speakers.

Sociocultural profile of Koreanized English words 朝鲜化英语词汇的社会文化特征

ABSTRACT This article aims to illustrate how Koreanized English words capture the dynamic sociocultural and sociolinguistic façade of South Korea. The examples were taken from a few sociocultural contexts: education, relationships and eating culture. Korean speakers creatively navigate between two linguistic codes (Korean and English) to express novel meanings and describe sociocultural changes and innovations in Korean society. It is possible that such lexical items may not be intuitively recognized by English speakers outside Korea or those who are not familiar with the Korean lifestyle. However, by analyzing the trajectories of Koreanized English words we can gain insight into the correlation between Korean society and language use, and eventually better understand Korean use of the English language. This article also briefly discusses main word-formation trends in the creation of Koreanized English words.

ELF and multilingual justice in English language teaching practices: voices from Indonesian English lecturers 英语教学实践中的ELF与多语公正:来自印尼英语讲师的声音

ABSTRACT The unprecedented spread of English across geopolitical boundaries has contributed to the recurrent rise of English as a lingua franca (ELF) studies. However, pressure from native English speakers’ norms remains feasible in many English instructional activities in non-English-speaking countries including Indonesia. Using semi-structured interview with four teachers in UMI University, this article examines the perception of Indonesian English teachers towards ELF and the extent to which the ELT practices (may) accommodate multilingual justice. The findings demonstrated that teachers have a complex perception and ambivalent attitude towards ELF as they think ELF is important for the students, but, due to lack of support from institution and colleagues, they tend to orient their teaching activities to native English norms. Also, the current practice of ELT doesn’t (yet) accommodate justice for multilingual learners. A more systematic institutional policy needs to be undertaken to reinforce the teachers’ existing positive perspective towards ELF.

A study on English learning strategies of university students in Hong Kong 香港大学生英语学习策略研究

ABSTRACT This study attempted to analyze learning strategies used by Hong Kong university students for learning English. Results indicate that Cantonese native speakers mostly used cognitive strategies when learning English, while memory strategies were the least used. Besides, the use of memory strategies among males varied significantly, and little difference was observed in the use of metacognitive strategies by females. The use of cognitive strategies was significantly associated with grade level, with fourth-year students using cognitive strategies more often than fifth-year students. Finally, on correlating the daily study time with cognitive strategies, it was observed that students who studied more than 0.5 hours a day used cognitive strategies more frequently than those who studied less than 0.5 hours a day. This study not only provides new evidence that grade level and study time affect the use of English learning strategies in Hong Kong, but also yields some important pedagogical implications.

Besides, the use of memory strategies among males varied significantly, and little difference was observed in the use of metacognitive strategies by females. The use of cognitive strategies was significantly associated with grade level, with fourth-year students using cognitive strategies more often than fifth-year students. Finally, on correlating the daily study time with cognitive strategies, it was observed that students who studied more than 0.5 hours a day used cognitive strategies more frequently than those who studied less than 0.5 hours a day. Reflection on English in Japan and 'Japanese English' 对日本英语与“日本英语”的思考

ABSTRACT Globalization invalidates Kachru's geography-based Three Circles model in that people communicate across all three circles. Millions of nonnative speakers use English influenced by their mother tongues and home cultures. Thus English as a Lingua Franca has become an assemblage of English of various linguacultural backgrounds. However, the Japanese are still under the deeply-rooted native speakerism and pursue 'native-like' or 'near native' proficiency. The Japanese should not be ashamed of using English with the Japanese linguacultural flavor although we should aim at English which is understandable and acceptable to all English users rather than purposefully insist 'Japaneseness' in English. Fortunately we have a large stock of English lexis as loanwords in Japanese, most of which can be used in English as they are. We have great potentialities to be good English speakers.

ABSTRACT Narratives about death and loss require sensitivity and handling with care. However, the influence of the specific language employed within such narratives is not well understood. To help address this gap, this article details the findings of two complementary studies. Study 1 examined the ways in which the 2014 Malaysian Airline MH370 air tragedy is linguistically defined and constructed in a number of newspapers in Malaysia and the UK. Study 2 explored 50 Malaysian and 50 UK students’ attitudes towards the tragedy through the analysis of keyword responses. The findings of study 1 suggest an overall tendency within UK newspapers to construct simplistic binary classifications of ‘capable us’ and ‘incapable others’ whereas the Malaysian broadsheets frequently highlighted the Malaysian authorities’ expert management of the crisis. By contrast, both Malaysian and UK students’ attitudinal responses demonstrated a greater depth of emotional engagement with the tragedy through the use of affective language.
