ABSTRACT Preservation of the built vernacular heritage contributes to maintaining a ‘sense of place' and cultural diversity; yet, it is often ignored in preservation practices that favour high styled architectures and monumental sites. In China, although the understanding of the value of vernacular expression has shown some progress, technical and methodological efforts are still necessary to address the diversity and complexity of vernacular heritage. In this paper, the Xijie Historic District in Dujiangyan City in China provides an example for the preservation of the built vernacular heritage in the context of neighbourhood revitalization during a post-earthquake reconstruction project. Five types of intervention are examined in this paper, including the repair and restoration of the monuments, restoration of historic buildings, rehabilitation of traditional houses, contextual design of new buildings, and demolition to provide public space and facilities. In particular, the measures implemented to meet the residents' needs while maintaining the diversity of the built vernacular heritage are inspected. This study concludes with three recommendations: the classification of vernacular environments and employment of diverse measures to each type; the adaptation of the vernacular environment to meet residents’ expectations and aspirations; and recognition of the development and reasonable control of the changes.

ABSTRACT Legislation on architectural heritage protection in Albania follows the political and historical events of the country. In this paper, I will outline how ‘cultural monument’ concept evolves within the main Albanian legislative timeline in the cultural heritage protection field. The discussion will highlight how cultural monuments significance, from the early concept of ‘National Monuments’ at the dawn of the new Albanian State, to ‘Cultural Monuments’ conceived as people common heritage, have always had, and still have, a pivotal role in the Albanian cultural debate. Purged from the regime ideology, those notions reflect the concept of monument intended as the main outstanding material testimony of an artefact or a constructive culture or of its formal and technical evolution which cannot be preserved through passive constraints. Finally, following the years after the regime collapse (1992), the recent updating of the national law on cultural heritage protection has been a priority for the country and the debate is still open. Thus, the 2000s legislative framework, evolved since the post-communist period until present, should be considered in the light of the transition from the notion of cultural monuments to that one of cultural heritage paying attention to cultural values recognition process and significance.

ABSTRACT A rare example of nineteenth-century Rococo-style interior decorations was recently uncovered in the National Military Museum of Cairo, Egypt. Samples of the decorations were analysed using different analytical techniques. The sequence of the paint layers was examined with a digital USB optical microscope. Microstructural examination and microanalysis of the samples were conducted using an environmental scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis spectroscopy (ESEM–EDX). The molecular structure of the samples was analysed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) was applied to identify the mineralogical composition of plaster samples. The results allowed the characterisation of two underlying layers based mainly on two phases of calcium sulphate. Pigment materials of vermilion, red lead, red ochre, hydrocerussite, carbon black and green earth were identified. Several chromatic hues were produced by different proportions of mixed pigments. Additionally, chromatic alterations in the red layer were reported and discussed. Based on the results of the analyses, a multi-step restoration was carried out. The intervention procedures were cleaning, application of injection grouts, removal of old mortars, reconstruction of missing components of the composition and retouching. Finally, a superficial protection layer was applied to the decorations to prevent any future damage.

ABSTRACT This paper analyses the value of Hubei Ancient Village as an example of urban villages by examining its historical evolution, cultural continuity, existing problems and corresponding connection to the development of Shenzhen. This paper expounds the necessity of maintaining Hubei Ancient Village, an urban village, and proposes a low-disturbance plan for protecting the human environment and advancing the progressive renewal of the material landscape to ensure the overall protection of the village at the dual levels of material and culture. This study also provides a reference for the formulation of protection rules for other urban villages.

ABSTRACT Kenzo Tange was deeply interested in the contemporary architectural culture and eager to incorporate, in his own formal register, typical traditional expressions. In his work, the structure of the city and the buildings is reconsidered as a ‘space of communications’, rich in symbolic values, where every form can have several meanings, and therefore have an impact on the compositional, constructive and functional approach. The plans he designed for Tokyo, Skopje and the Italian directional centres, show the fluid, technological and ever-changing dynamic that Tange experienced in 1987 in the Umbrian city of Spoleto, where he was called to submit a project to improve the urban accessibility for the old town. In Spoleto, he combined technological equipment, mechanised routes on electric sidewalks placed on the surface, in close contact with the city’s historical buildings, with particular attention to the conservation of all the stratified architecture of the historic city centre. The dialectic between the tradition and the creation, i.e. between the trend of a traditional repetition of forms and their overcoming, offers a gateway by which it’s possible to appreciate the genius of the architect and also to understand the demands of conservation from the perspective of innovation.

ABSTRACT The dovecotes of Kayseri-Gesi stand out as unique examples of indigenous architecture of Anatolia. They are considered significant elements of the rural landscape. The purpose of the construction, the constructional and spatial characteristics peculiar to these dovecotes, make them an important element of global cultural and architectural heritage. Dovecotes that are built upon rocks, with mere building stones provided from the same rocks, look like a shaped form of the topography itself. This is very much to do with the geological features of the Cappadocia Region where Kayseri is located. In terms of construction techniques and spatial organization, the dramatic differences in the dovecotes’ underground and aboveground parts make them even more outstanding. This research is based on the field studies conducted in the dovecotes of Kayabağ. The landscape was studied in all aspects and each dovecote is studied for its placement, topographical interactions, plan and section typologies, materiality and construction techniques. The structural problems stemmed from the geological features and the deterioration caused by external factors are taken into consideration. The study concludes with an overall approach for preservation, sustainability and conservation process of the heritage landscape of Dovecotes [Güvercinlik] of Kayabağ.

ABSTRACT The Yangtze River and the Yellow River are located in the south and north of China respectively. They are considered the two sources of Chinese civilization. For thousands of years, the cultures of the two river basins have merged, thus forming the five thousand years of Chinese civilization. Despite this long integration, the two cultures have maintained their distinct personality. Vernacular dwellings are no exception. This paper researches the architectural decoration of traditional vernacular dwellings in these two basins. After field investigations, a total of 308 examples of traditional vernacular dwellings have been selected from the two regions. 186 examples are located in the Yangtze River basin and 122 examples in the Yellow River basin. The architectural decoration of these traditional vernacular dwellings is examined from the aspects of brick carvings, wood carvings, stone carvings, oil paintings and colour paintings. The focus of this study is the identification of decorative variances in the architectural decoration of these traditional vernacular dwellings due to regional influences. Attempts were made to ascertain the reasons for these differences, in terms of geography, climate, politics, technology and folk customs.

ABSTRACT It has been known that the westernization efforts that started in the last period of the Ottoman Empire continued in the Republican era and that a wide and radical change was made in order to build a new and modern state. This period also includes the formation, development and the end of the First National Architecture movement. Reşadiye Numune School, which is one of the representatives of First National Architecture movement has been studied in this article. During the Ottoman Empire’s Westernization movements period, there were fundamental changes in the materials and techniques used in Ottoman architecture via the influence of architects and engineers trained in Europe. In addition, important discussions were carried out on architecture under the influence of the prevailing movement of Turkish Nationalism. The Reşadiye Numune School of Architect Kemalettin was an early example of hosting all contemporary qualities discussed above. Through the analysis of this building, the planning of school buildings, their construction techniques and materials, and how their architectural forms were interpreted during the First National Architecture period shall be examined. The preservation and reuse of historic and structural values of construction shall be emphasized in terms of addressing the possibilities in this direction.

ABSTRACT Cities are the carrier of culture and collective memory of a place. Nowadays, however, there are already globally developed frameworks for the conservation of tangible urban heritage with the loss of historic meaning, which means, the public (including local residents and tourists) can hardly perceive the authenticity of urban heritage in the modern society. As a result, few of them can understand the identity and historical layering process of the city. From the perspective of Historic Urban Landscape (HUL), this paper sets out the experience and approaches of public perceptions of authenticity through literature review and comments data mining, and takes the Five Avenues Historic District in Tianjin as a case study in order to propose strategies for enhancing public perceptions of authenticity of urban heritage. By doing this, the public can have a better understanding of the meaning of urban heritage, which would contribute to its distinctive identity, as well as the management of change.

ABSTRACT This article aims to interrogate how local government and community in Banda Aceh define heritage, especially built-heritage. We argue the Authorized Heritage Discourse (AHD) presents itself not only in experts or official discourse, but also within community; but the boundaries have no clear edge and been adjusted accordingly. The definition of architectural heritage has been continuously negotiated along the process of heritage designation and planning. It is evident, for example, in ongoing acceptance of tsunami-related things as heritage. Despite their initial rejection and disagreement with local community to include tsunami debris such as Kapal Apung as heritage, now government - especially Conservation Board for Tangible Heritage (BPCB) that in 2012 still reluctant to include tsunami items as heritage - is on its way to include them as heritage for their important histories. On the other hand, even though it is second symbol of Banda Aceh, community and experts have different perception of the heritage status of the Tsunami Museum built during reconstruction after the 2004 Tsunami, due to its age less than 50 years. We argue the Authorized Heritage Discourse (AHD) presents itself not only in experts or official discourse, but also within community; but the boundaries have no clear edge and been adjusted accordingly. The definition of architectural heritage has been continuously negotiated along the process of heritage designation and planning. It is evident, for example, in ongoing acceptance of tsunami-related things as heritage. Despite their initial rejection and disagreement with local community to include tsunami debris such as Kapal Apung as heritage, now government - especially Conservation Board for Tangible Heritage (BPCB) that in 2012 still reluctant to include tsunami items as heritage - is on its way to include them as heritage for their important histories. On the other hand, even though it is second symbol of Banda Aceh, community and experts have different perception of the heritage status of the Tsunami Museum built during reconstruction after the 2004 Tsunami, due to its age less than 50 years. Within this negotiated definition Rumoh Aceh, the Baiturrahman Mosque, Putroe Phang, Gunongan and Aceh Museum are among top five architectural heritage for community and experts.","PeriodicalId":44303,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Architectural Conservation","volume":"25 1","pages":"211 - 227"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2019-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/13556207.2019.1635768","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47911519","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
