A method has been developed to determine all scattering parameters or their eigenvalues of a symmetrical three-port junction. Vector measurements are reduced to reflection coefficient measurements taken at one port. A versatile minicomputer controlled system is presented for analyzing and optimizing symmetrical junction circulators of any kind.

The use of suspended strip lines is becoming a powerful transmission technique at millimeter wavelengths because of low attenuation, weak dispersion, and various merits in manufacturing processes. This paper estimates effects of side-wall grooves of these lines on transmission characteristics within the TEM wave approximation.

Based on the mode-matching method useful for computing the accurate resonant frequencies, two approaches due to the complex frequency and to the perturbation theory are described to accurately compute Q-factors of TE/sub 0/ dielectric rod resonators placed between two parallel conductor plates and in a conductor cavity. Influence of the conductor shields on the Q-factors is discussed from the computed results.

In this paper a method is presented which permits the quick and exact fabrication of tapers in finline technique. This method uses tapers in the form of circular area which are matched to the slotwidth as a function of the characteristic impedance. For the application of the described method the field distributions and the characteristic impedances of finlines must be known.

Using a fullwave analysis we have calculated the loss due to surface wave and space wave radiation at three types of discontinuities in planar millimeter wave transmission lines. The open ended microstrip, the microstrip gap and the short circuited coplanar waveguide were investigated on electrically thick substrates. Results on typical high dielectric substrates are presented.

We present here an improved method of determining the intrinsic SSB mixer noise figure from noise measurements in single and "imperfect" balanced configurations. We describe the experimental set-up as applied to beam-lead Schottky diodes at 94GHz, and give results of NF, suppression factor and LO noise level.

In the measurement procedure known as Courtney method, the dielectric constant of a cylindrical dielectric resonator is determined by measurement of the resonant frequency of the TE/sub 011/ mode. The reliability and accuracy of this method can be improved by also utilizing higher resonant modes. A procedure for identification of the modes is described, and some example results for measured dielectric constant are presented.

The study focuses on the application of transversal and recursive principles to the design of broadband active filters for microwave frequencies, employing microwave transistors as active elements. Physical implementation of these concepts is illustrated with a transversal-type and a recursive-type experimental filter. To offer a convenient basis for comparison, both examples are chosen to provide 9-to-15-GHz bandpass responses.

Complex refractive index and Complex dielectric permittivity and loss tangent data for polyethylene, polypropylene, poly-4 methyl pentene-1 (TPX) and polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon) are presented over the frequency range 40-300 GHz. All of these non-polar polymers are extremely low loss material. Like the microwave region, polyethylene demonstrates exceptionally low loss characteristic in the entire millimeter wave region. Polar polymers such as Nylon and plexiglass exhibit much higher absorption (nearly an order of magnitude higher) loss compared to non-polar polymers.
