A theoretical approach for the representation of microstrip discontinuities by equivalent circuits with frequency dependent parameters is presented. The method accounts accurately for the substrate presence and associated surface wave model, strip finite thickness and radiation losses. The method can also be applied for the solution of microstrip components in the millimetric frequency range.

A series tuned GaAs VCO employing a second harmonic radial disk circuit has provided up to 10 percent electronic tuning bandwidth (ETB) at 94GHz. Packaged GaAs Gunn and Hyperabrupt Varactor Diodes are employed. Analysis of the series equivalent circuit provides insight into methods of controlling trade-off between output power and tuning bandwidth, e.g. by restricting the ETB to 1.5GHz around 92.3GHz an output power of 18 to 22mW was achieved; with tighter coupling an output power of 11 to 12.8mW from 91.5 to 95.5GHz resulted.

This paper describes the design and performance of a contiguous 90- to 112-GHz diplexer using the integrated finline technique. State-of-the-art results of 1.5 dB insertion losses have been achieved. There is good agreement between the experimental results and those predicted theoretically; these results demonstrate a significant technological advance of millimeter-wave multiplexer using printed circuit techniques. Results of an extremely wideband H-plane tee with a VSWR of less than 1.4 over the full W-band (75 to 110 GHz) are also presented.

Design and performance of an 135 GHz, 3rd harmonic oscillator utilizing a 45 GHz Ga As-Gunn device is described. The nonlinear capacitance of the Gunn-device is used for frequency triplication. Hence an idler circuit for the 2nd harmonic wave is built in. This raises the efficiency of fundamental wave to 3rd harmonic wave conversion considerably. Output power was measured as 3 mW.

A coplanar waveguide short gap resonator as an electromagnetic energy coupler for medical applications is described. The principles and design formulas are given and the experimental results are provided. From the data, obtained on a phantom, it can be shown that this coupler can couple the EM energy more efficiently.

A technique for calibrating an arbitrary six-port network using nine unknown loads and three known loads is described. The technique is similar to the self-calibration technique first developed by Engen. However, it uses full six-port to four-port reduction so that it is quite insensitive to errors, The theory is illustrated with typical measurement results showing an accuracy of better than 1.0% achievable without optimization of the six-port to four-port reduction constants.

High power and temperature stable "Channel Dropping Filters" for Transmission Multiplexer of base stations have been miniaturized to almost 1/3 the size of the dielectric TM/sub 010/ resonator filter by using triple mode resonance, and we reported on this at the last symposium. The triple mode resonator works as resonators of three independent one-section filters. The isolation level between each two filter was about 40dB.

Sensitivity analysis of a 15.0 GHz monopulse radar receiver using logarithmic amplifiers as the detection scheme is presented. The effects of receiver gain, noise figure, bandwidth, and phase and amplitude balance on system tracking performance are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the influence of noise on tracking sensitivity. A brief overview of the system as well as actual test results are included.

A new software CAD tool entitled MIDAS has been developed for microwave RF network design. MIDAS allows use of algebriac expressions to define and value necessary for network analysis. In addition, any expression may be frequency-dependent. MIDAS is fully integrated with PLANA, a network measurement program, allowing PLANA networks to be sub-networks of MIDAS. New component models may be entirely expressed in MIDAS language, alleviating the need to program in other languages.
