A hybrid programmable transversal filter (HPTF) is described that employs a LiNbO/sub 3/ SAW delay line and two monolithic dual-gate GaAs FET arrays to control magnitude and sign of the 16 tap weights. The HPTF is completely programmable and is constrained only by the bandwidth (100 MHz centered at 250 MHz) and the number of taps. Theoretical calculations of tap weight control range and dynamic range are presented, compared with experiment and used to justify the hybrid LiNbO/sub 3/ SAW - GaAs FET combination. A dynamic range of 85 dB and a continuously variable tap weight control range of 70 dB are demonstrated.

A 1-Watt X-band variable power amplifier is described which employs an 1800 µm GaAs dual-gate FET. Small-signal models of the device are presented and used to design for minimum insertion phase change over the gain control range. The amplifier has a power-added efficiency of 25 percent and its insertion phase varies less than 15 degrees over a 15 dB gain control range.

The dispersion characteristics of graded index optical fiber are studied using a transverse transmission line circuit representation. For round fibers new approximations have been developed which significantly simplifies the analysis. An interesting perspective as to the physical mechanisms underlying the dispersion characteristics of such fibers result from circuit theoretic considerations.

Results are presented for the effect of an air gap between the top metal plate and the dielectric strip in nonradiative dielectric (NRD) guide, a promising candidate for millimeter wave integrated circuits. The leakage from small gaps can cause crosstalk between components, and that from larger gaps can furnish a new type of leaky wave antenna.

Several matrix formulations for the microstrip step discontinuity problem are compared. Although they are theoretically identical, one of them has a decided advantage in numerical labor, relative and absolute convergence. Results by this method are checked with other published data and with those independently derived by the modified residue calculus technique.

The miniature millimeter-wave integrated circuit LO/mixer assembly was developed with over the full waveguide band coverage and good temperature stability. A conversion loss of less than 7 dB was achieved over 16 GHz instantaneous IF frequency with the RF swept from 30 to 46 GHz and the LO at 48 GHz. With another mixer, when the RF was swept from 18 to 30 GHz and the LO was at 32 GHz, similar results were achieved. Using resonant stub and dielectric temperature compensation produced good temperature stability.

The chain matrices of spurline bandstop filters employing asymmetrical two lines and symmetrical three lines in an inhomogeneous medium were derived and used for accurate filter design. One-section spurline bandstop filters at 26.5 to 40 GHz have been designed and tested. There is an excellent agreement between the experimental results and those predicted theoretically.

A computer program for designing self-equalized equiripple, even order filters is presented. The program permits its operator to attempt to meet a given set of filter response specifications by positioning either the imaginary axis zeros (i.e., the insertion loss poles) or the complex plane zeros (i.e., the equalization poles) of S/sub 21/(s), or both. Once the zeros are optimally located, the program will first synthesize a symmetric canonical, cross-coupled array filter from the two-port, short-circuit Y-parameters. Next, the program will convert this structure, by a series of plane rotations of the coupling matrix, into an assymmetric canonical configuration. Both calculated and measured response data are presented.
