Demotivating Factors among Undergraduate Distance English Learners: A Chinese Case Study 大学生远程英语学习者的学习动机因素:一个中国个案研究

This study explores demotivating factors for undergraduate English majors in a Chinese university in the context of distance courses during the COVID-19 lockdown. Delving into students’ reflection in this unusual period through in-depth interviews, a qualitative analysis of what demotivates students is provided, as well as a comparison of the findings with those obtained in earlier studies conducted in traditional classrooms. In all, ten students participated in the study and provided their insights. The interviews were transcribed and coded following established qualitative research methods. It is shown that in the context of distance education, the lack of learning strategies demotivated students the most, followed by teacher-related factors, learning environment, technical problems, and peer influences. The lack of self-regulation was pinpointed as the largest demotivator, trailed by teacher-student interactions in class, inappropriate institutional management, long screen time, and negative peer influences. Supporting previous results, this study found that self-related and teacher-related factors impacted demotivation, but in this research they had different weightings, such as the lack of self-regulation which was more powerful than previously documented. Technical problems, such as the long screen time, were related to inappropriate institutional arrangements, and this also diverged from previous findings. These findings may prove a springboard to future discussion on blends of traditional and non-traditional language education, with possible effects on student demotivation at the forefront © 2022. Prototipicidad de sujetos en la variación dialectal del verbo ‘haber’ 动词“haber”方言变体中主语的原型性

The alternation of the verb haber as a personal or impersonal form appears in all Spanish variants (‘Hubieron’ problemas / ‘había’ personas ). While prescriptivists argue that haber belongs to impersonal constructions and must be conjugated in singular form, manifold investigations show its pluralization (DeMello, 1991; Gómez Molina, 2013). For that purpose, an analysis of the haber pluralization in both Mexican and Cuban Spanish is presented from the obtained data in two sociolinguistic corpora. The investigation’s aim is to analyze linguistic and extralinguistic factors that modify the haber conjugations when it co-occurs with a collective plural or singular noun phrase to determine the use patterns in both dialects, and to delimit its social stratification as well as to verify if pluralization increases when NP co-occurs with a verb which shows features of a prototypical subject. In La Habana pluralization reached 47.2% while in Ciudad de Mexico only 8.6%. The factors that resulted statistically significant were the NP’s collectivity which disfavors pluralization and the animacy that favors it. Moreover, in Ciudad de Mexico the education level and age proved to be significant. Due to the pluralization frequency among youth and adults, as well as its greater use among those with a low-level education, it could be interpreted as a change in progress that encourages the displacement of the accusative construction (‘ haber + OD’) to an intransitive one which conceptualizes the noun as the subject of the sentence.

First, a revision of the anaphora concept and its classification in the specialized literature is made. The Bilingual dilemma: Inhibiting Interference and its Effect on the Bilingual Advantage 双语困境:抑制干扰及其对双语优势的影响

A debated topic in the bilingualism field is if there is an advantage for bilinguals in terms of executive functions (EF). EF are an assemblage of mental processes and self-regulation skills including both basic and higher-level cognitive processes such as inhibition, working memory, monitoring, task shifting, updating, working memory capacity, planning, flexibility, and reasoning. This study investigated whether there was an inhibition control advantage for highly proficient Spanish-English late bilingual adults, compared to Spanish-speaking monolingual adults in Bogotá, Colombia. The study utilized the Victoria version of the Stroop Task (Stroop, 1935) to measure the abilities of inhibitory control between the two groups, in addition to other measures to determine second language proficiency levels. A total of 21 monolingual and 20 bilingual participants between the ages of 20 to 38 took part in the study. Results showed that there was no significant difference in response times between the bilingual and monolingual participants when performing the Stroop task. The implications of these results, the limitations of the study and recommended changes for future studies, which could potentially demonstrate a bilingual advantage, are discussed.

O artigo objetiva fomentar discussões sobre atualização curricular relacionando Educação Profissional e Tecnológica com Educação para relações étnico-raciais numa perspectiva humanística e intercultural. O estudo baseou-se nos aportes teóricos de estudiosos da Pedagogia histórico-crítica e de estudiosos da temática História e cultura afro-brasileira. Mediante pesquisa exploratória, revisão bibliográfica e análise documental analisou-se no recorte investigativo como esta temática, prevista em marcos legais vigentes, está organizada no Projeto Pedagógico de um Curso Técnico em Agropecuária Integrado ao Ensino Médio de um Instituto Federal da região norte brasileira. O estudo indica que a referida temática ocupa lugar periférico e exíguo no currículo, se revelando desvinculada de práticas interculturais e da formação integrada. Urge, portanto, articulação entre currículo escolar e igualdade de direitos educacionais.

O objetivo deste estudo é desenvolver conexões entre o uso do software Tasy no ensino por meio de aproximações com a teoria da aprendizagem significativa de Ausubel. Trata-se de um estudo teórico de cunho reflexivo e qualitativo. As discussões que permeiam o estudo conduzem a um limiar histórico sobre a inserção da teoria da aprendizagem significativa proposta por Ausubel em meio às correntes teóricas de ensino e aprendizagem que emergiram no último século. Os conceitos de aprendizagem significativa e Tasy foram detalhados e apresentados. E por fim, as conexões entre o software e a teoria da aprendizagem significativa foram apresentadas por meio do delineamento de um ensino potencialmente significativo com o apoio do Tasy. Considera-se que o estudo elucida o papel do Tasy no contexto da aprendizagem significativa, provocando a realização de estudos aprofundados para a validação do processo.

O objetivo do texto é discutir a literatura na educação de jovens e adultos trabalhadores, a partir dos estudos do campo marxista, especialmente nas obras de Lucáks e Gramsci, em seus esforços por atualizar a problemática da formação humana, tendo como chave analítica a relação entre o marxismo, a linguagem e a literatura. Concluímos apontando algumas possibilidades da práxis pedagógica da literatura, no contexto da pandemia, em estudo realizado com alunos do curso de pedagogia de uma universidade pública do estado do Rio de Janeiro.

PERSPECTIVA SEMIÓTICA DE COMERCIAIS DE ALIMENTOS DESTINADOS AO PÚBLICO INFANTIL

O contexto de um mercado cada vez mais competitivo, no qual empresas buscam se especializar e atingir nichos específicos, somado às mudanças na estrutura familiar, como a inserção da mulher no mercado de trabalho, o adiamento da gravidez e menor número de crianças por casa, propiciaram um ambiente de ganho de poder de decisão da criança junto à sua família, fazendo do mercado infantil um atrativo para as empresas. Desta maneira as empresas buscam formas de persuasão para com este nicho, dentre elas, está a adoção de signos no conteúdo de suas propagandas, os quais podem ser analisados através da semiótica. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi explorar, por meio da metodologia da tríade de pontos de Peirce, como os signos são adotados pelas empresas alimentícias na construção de comerciais destinados ao público infantil. Verificou-se a presença destes signos em propagandas televisivas de alimentos infantis, no uso das cores nos anúncios, nas mascotes, na trilha sonora, no ambiente e na escrita. O uso de cores primárias, formatos de letra com continuidade, contextos de diversão e aventura e a presença de mascotes criam uma atmosfera que envolve o consumidor infantil, aproximando simbolicamente a marca à realidade lúdica da criança.
