Developments in recent years in the technologies that underpin money transfers and financial investments have challenged banking in general and central banking in particular. On the one hand, with the onset and manifestation of the 2008 crisis, the banking system is being called into question as to whether it can be trusted, and on the other hand, also in the same historical context, blockchain technology is emerging and is seen as a threat by banks. Lately, there has been interest in Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) which are a digital replacement for banknotes and coins in physical form. In this paper we will highlight the features of CBDCs and the proposed Ethereum-based central bank money technology.

Purpose: This study aims to develop a research model to investigate how the structure and mechanisms of innovation crowdsourcing influence knowledge management and innovation performance, based on the perspectives of open innovation theory and the knowledge-based view (KBV) of the firm. Design/Methodology/Approach: The research model and associated hypotheses were tested using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM), based on a dataset from the Microsoft Power BI community of business intelligence (BI) and analytics tools. Findings: The results show that both organisational and technical mechanisms of the community positively influence the community structure. The community structure has a positive impact on knowledge acquisition, knowledge transformation and the size and diversity of crowd participation. The mechanisms of innovation crowdsourcing and knowledge transformation in turn have a strong influence on innovation performance. Originality: This study is among the first to provide analytical insights into the mechanisms of innovation crowdsourcing and their underlying impact on innovation performance in the context of BI and analytics tools that exhibit a multiplicity and complexity of functions and capabilities. It therefore provides strategic guidance on how to effectively stimulate crowd intelligence and maximise the collaborative and synergistic effectiveness of innovation crowdsourcing communities, focusing on knowledge management practices and user innovation behaviour and performance.

Purpose: Entrepreneurship has come to be considered as one key to the economic development of countries. Our work assesses the connection between entrepreneurship and the economic development of nine MENA economies for 2006-2018. We aim to shed additional light on the role of entrepreneurship in affecting the economy of the Middle East and African countries, hence, relates some policy and managerial implications with the results. Design/methodology/approach: Two different indicators of entrepreneurship are used; self-employment rates and the number of new business formations. The study employed four control variables: human capital, the money supply, governance quality, and foreign direct investment. We use an econometric analysis based on panel data with fixed and random effects methodology (for every year) to test the feed-back effects between entrepreneurship, economic development, and other control variables in the MENA region. Findings: Our empirical analysis suggests that the effectiveness of entrepreneurship in generating economic development in the MENA region is not related to the number of self-employed but to the creative and imitative entry of existing businesses into new markets. On the other hand, the growth of new businesses is insufficient to spur the economy unless good governance quality manages entrepreneurship in the region. Originality/value: This research adds to the literature in two ways: first, we provide new insights into the effect of two types of entrepreneurship (self-employment rate/new business formation) on economic development in the MENA region. Secondly, our research innovates in the selection of control variables to investigate factors that relate entrepreneurship to economic development. Additionally, the novelty of this paper is to analyze the relationship between entrepreneurship and economic development in the MENA region for a new period and new combinations of intermediates variables.

Jordan has experienced an unprecedented refugee crisis since 2011, adding to the country' s burdens due to the scarcity of resources and previous waves of asylum seekers. Although micro and small enterprises (MSEs) aim to empower women, specifically regarding achieving the UN' s Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, there is very little research focus on this type of enterprise and how refugees impact MSEs' sustainability. Purpose: This paper investigates how Syrian refugees impact Jordanian women-owned MSEs' sustainability. Design: The study used case studies and qualitative interviews with 24 female entrepreneurs whose enterprises did or did not achieve sustainability; five experts were also interviewed. Findings: No significant negative impact of refugees on women' s MSEs was found. Original: This study offers a unique perspective by filling an academic gap in the research on the influence refugees have on women' s MSEs. Implications: Further studies are recommended to build a solid database of female entrepreneurs.

Purpose: Entrepreneurial intentions have been a major focus of research that have been studied using generic models. The paper will use Bayesian Networks to model entrepreneurial intentions as it provides an advantage over classical methods. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted among a random sample of 324 Emirati University students by implementing the Unsupervised Structural Learning algorithm to build the Model. Findings: Entrepreneurial intentions are highly affected by attitude, self-efficacy, subjective norms, and opportunity feasibility. Whereas obstacles and university opportunity feasibility are the variables whose influence on entrepreneurial intention is less. Originality: This study looked at entrepreneurship intention and attitudes among students who are not yet entrepreneurs using Bayesian networks as a new technique and see how this can affect their intention in stating a business. Conclusions are stemming from the existing Emirati social construct (people-centric society of the Arab world, rather than system-centric society of the Western world). This has created value-added contribution of the paper to the research questions.

Purpose: The current study aims to investigate the role of green human resource management (GHRM, i.e., green competence building, green motivation enhancement, and green employee involvement) practices in enhancing employee environmental performance in the health care sector during the COVID-19 pandemic. Design/methodology/approach: The data were collected from hospital staff (N=350) working in different private and public hospitals of China. Structural equational modelling–partial least squares (PLS–SEM) modelling was used to test the proposed model based on the respondents' data. Findings: The study results support the relationship between GHRM practices and environmental performance directly and through employees' green attitudes during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study results also extend this support to the negative moderating role of perceived personal inconvenience on the relationship between GHRM practices and environmental performance.

PURPOSE: The present research addresses the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and describes the adopted innovative strategies taken by managers and business owners of SMEs in Jordan in order to keep their businesses up and running. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Our analysis is based on a review of secondary data, including Jordanian government documents, the Central Bank of Jordan circulars, and data from the World Bank and World Health Organization (WHO). Also, the descriptive study design is based on 20 semi-structured interviews with managers and business owners of SMEs in Jordan who have so far succeeded in surviving the pandemic, thereby allowing us to collect qualitative data. FINDINGS: The results have shown that Jordanian SMEs were severely impacted by issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic. This research highlights the surviving Jordanian SMEs’ use of innovative strategies such as cash management and the stimulation of the digitalisation of their activities, among others. Also, the findings might help formulate strategic decisions that focus on SMEs’ recovery and regrowth by developing and implementing contingency strategies to meet any undesirable situations arising from the COVID-19 pandemic. RESEARCH LIMITATIONS: This research is focused on the techniques being used by Jordanian SMEs in getting through the COVID-19 crisis, including policies regarding social distancing. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: Our findings show how Jordanian SMEs are continuing to persevere during this pandemic by modifying their business models to fluctuating environmental situations in minimal time. As a result, the recognised innovative strategies will potentially help aspiring Jordanian SMEs to persist within the COVID-19 pandemic. © 2022 World Association for Sustainable Development (WASD).

The purpose of this paper is to analyse existing theoretical and practical approaches to the explanation of the essence of business clusters. This study observes the nature of clusters, as well as inspects dynamic changes in the perception of a cluster as an agglomeration. The research is based on a literature review, within the scope of which theoretical approaches are divided into four categories, namely the British, Italian, American and Scandinavian visions. Not only does the paper contain detailed examinations of the approaches, but it also reveals an evaluation of each approach from the position of nine measurement criteria that are proposed within a comparative analysis. The choice of implemented criteria is justified by their significance for the description of clusters. Apart from that, the study highlights distinguishing features of all approaches.
